We have a 1996 Royal 4650 canister, needs new motor, vacuum repair place says they can do that for $235, is it worth it or should we buy a new vacuum?

That cost seems somewhat excessive. The motor is super easy to replace (a few screws) and costs no where near $225. It's just a Lamb (ametek) 2 stage motor.

4650 Motor

Tom,

My name is Derreck and I actually own a vacuum store in Washington, MO. Not sure which store you took your vacuum to get an estimate, but I don't remember talking to you. I actually just did some research and here is what I found. I went to one of my parts dealer websites and pulled up the schematics for the Royal 4650. The motor for your vacuum is not the same as a standard Lamb/Ametek motor. According to Royal, the part number for your motor is 2460003000. If you look up that part number the description is "Variable speed motor w/ circuit board". This indicates that it is a unique motor for your vacuum that includes a circuit board to control the variable speed funcionality. The suppliers site that I went to, ESSCO, says that the motor is NO LONGER AVAILABLE. I then went directly to the TTI Floorcare site, which is now the parent company of Royal, and researched the same part number. They also say that the motor is "OUT OF PRODUCTION". It seems to be an expensive motor, as I noticed when I looked it up that the dealer cost on the motor is $150. If you google the part # 2460003000, you will find some websites that say they have one for sale, but again they are very expensive. www.usavacuum.com... says that they have one for $237.95 (I will include the link at the bottom of this post). If you found someone to do it for the $235, it seems like that is a good deal, but they would have to have the motor as a new old stock part, as it is not available to order by repair shops any longer. If you like the vacuum, I say if you can get a motor, get it repaired. If that seems like too much to spend on an old machine, I would be happy to meet with you at my shop and show you some wonderful new canister vacuums. We sell Miele and Sebo canister vacuum cleaners, both of which are made in Germany and would have similar, if not nicer features, and have much better filtration than what the Royal had. Both the Miele and Sebo vacuums are manufactured with the fit and finish that you would expect of a nice vacuum and have wonderful warranties to go with them! Feel free to contact me anytime!

My store information:

Franklin County Vacuum
(636)239-3795
513 Jefferson Street
Washington, MO 63090

Here is a link to the website claiming to have a motor for your Royal, but I would contact them first to make sure it is actually an item that they have in stock, as many online retailers fail to remove the product from their offering after it has become unavailable.

Good luck, and please contact me if you would like some help!

I bought my Stark/Royal 4650 on Craig's list last summer for 25 bucks. Motor and powerhead were fine, powered hose had issues but worked if you put the main switch in blower mode which bypasses the variable speed stuff.
They show up from time to time and usually aren't terribly expensive either so might be worth joining and setting a search up.
I have saved searches for Royal canister vacuum and Stark, plus other things I might want. Every time a new post shows up I get a e mail.
