I recently pulled down the vacuum motor assembly on our 1401 cannister which is marked with the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games, no Super J markings. Blew out the impellers, windings and armature with compressed air. Brush length appears to be about 40% remaining. Armature appeared decent, no arcing or pitting but did seem to have a slight "dish" in the wear pattern with about 1/32" ridges on each side. Burnished the armature with a rubber motor stone to clean it up.

When replacing the brushes should this armature be turned for truing or replaced or left as-is?

Did run it after cleaning, sounded good but it still seems to have weak suction compared to our Electrolux 2100; I estimate only a third. I am guessing it is a two stage as it has a separate fan impeller in it's own compartment of the assembly.

All windings appeared in good order with no sign of deterioration or over heating.

Brush holders were black color.

Thanks for any info or recomendations.

Sounds like this would be a Electrolux Olympia One from your description.

Now then, you say it has weak suction? Did you try it with the hose on, or trying with your hand at the bag door? If you tried testing the suction with the hose & it's a cloth woven hose, it's the hose that's the problem. The rubber lining inside them cracks & splits & breaks down over time. If you replace the hose with a genuine Aerus vinyl hose, it will solve your problem & suction will be restored. Please note, while there are aftermarket Aerus vinyl hoses on the market, very few are close to the quality of genuine Aerus hoses, & you pay only slightly extra money for a superior hose that will last at least 15-20 years.

Having said all that, it is also possible one of the fans inside the motor is damaged & requires replacement. Your Electrolux Olympia One & Electrolux 2100 should be pretty close in how much suction they produce. Try a new vinyl hose & see if that helps.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your input. The comparison between the two vacuums is with hose attached. Now the one on the Olympia is basically a 1205 woven hose that does not show any exterior damage, can't speak for the interior though. Sounds like it may be worth my while to try a new vinyl type from your suggestion. The fans looked great.

Do you think this hose would be a good choice? It appears to have the female plug that a PN2 could plug into:

Or this one:

Bill, the problem with your 1205 hose is you cannot see the wear on the INSIDE, which is the rubber lining inside deteriorating & cracking. If you run a fresh bag in the cleaner, you will notice when it gets really bad that you will see little black flakes in your bag, or if you take your hose off & give it a good shake over a hard floor, you will see them fall out onto the floor. Other members here have tried various methods to seal Electrolux hoses, but not without going to a LOT of trouble & effort & without a lot of great success. For your case, being an ordinary owner that wants a working vacuum, a genuine vinyl replacement is your best bet.

The first hose you linked to, the black 10 foot hose from Evacuumstore, that is a very nice one! I think the genuine & most aftermarket hoses are 6 1/2 to 7 foot long, so if you want the extra length, this would be a nice option. The hose handle is a design that was first used on Hayden central vacuum hoses, & is now used on many central vac brand's hoses & is also a common generic replacement hose handle used on many generic aftermarket replacement hoses. My only worry is that the hose is not a braided vinyl hose material like most Electrolux vinyl generic replacement hoses, it is a waxy-style hose material that is commonly used by Samsung, Kenmore/Panasonic & Filter Queen. If you elect to buy this hose, a word of caution on care....DO NOT EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, LEAVE THE HOSE ATTACHED TO THE WAND WHEN STORING IT!!! You must ALWAYS detach the hose from the wand & leave it on the ground. The reason for this is that leaving the hose
attached to the wand puts strain on the hose material, & over time can cause the hose material to crack & break, & require repair with duct tape, replacing the hose material, or entire replacement of the hose.

The second hose you linked to is the one that Perfect Products supplies with their knockoff of the metal Electrolux canister they sell. It is OK, but it has some flaws that to me are unacceptable & there are better generic alternatives at the price point it sells for. I personally own the plastic body version of this hose for the 2100 & can feel it leaking around the seams in the hose handle. Also be warned that there are 3 main problem areas with this hose, & most other generic hoses on the market. 1. The receptacle at the bottom that mates with the wand can burn out prematurely & require replacement. 2. The bleeder valve to reduce suction has a tendency to become loose over time & not stay closed as securely as it did when the hose is new, & may require entire replacement of the handle or taping or gluing the bleeder valve shut to get full suction when using the vacuum. 3. The plastic holes that the screws go into on the underside that hold the 2 hose handle halves together have a tendency to strip over time & not hold the handle together as securely as it did when new, requiring replacement of the handle.

For these reasons, this is why I recommend buying ONLY genuine Aerus Electrolux replacement hoses from a authorized Aerus Electrolux branch, or from a online dealer that you can verify FOR SURE that their hoses are indeed genuine. If you look at the second link below, that hose handle is a genuine Aerus Electrolux hose handle that is used on both the metal & plastic body canisters & the way to spot a genuine Aerus Electrolux hose or genuine Aerus Electrolux hose handle is by the round bleeder valve on the backside of the hose handle. The price on the first website I linked for the genuine Aerus Electrolux hose, $119.99, is what you should expect to pay at a Aerus dealer for the genuine hose, & is reasonable considering it is better quality, will be more durable & last much longer before having problems.

If the price of the genuine hose is a issue for you, or you insist on having the switch to turn off the powerhead, I would definitely go for the black 10 foot hose from Evacuumstore & not even consider the Perfect Products hose. The hose handle on the black 10 foot hose would be much better quality than the Perfect Products hose or any other generic replacement, & you will appreciate the extra length. Just remember to leave the hose off the wand when storing the vacuum & you will be fine.

One other thing to consider, since you are fixing up your Electrolux & improving it's cleaning performance, you may also want to consider buying a Electrolux L shaped powerhead, like the one I linked to below. You will find, with a new brushroll installed, the L shaped powerhead will groom & deep clean your carpet much better than your PN2. If you do buy a used one, make sure you buy the new-style 10 degree brushroll from a Aerus dealer for it, since if you buy used the brushroll will likely be worn out & need replacement anyways. And same with the hoses, DON'T be tempted to buy the aftermarket Perfect Products generic Electrolux replacement powerhead. It's OK, but they have had some rather substantial problems with it, notably the motor mounts. Although they are claiming now it's "new & improved", it's still not a patch on the quality of the original Aerus Electrolux powerheads.

Hope this helps you get your Electrolux up & running & cleaning your home again, & you get many more years of service from your vacuum, Bill.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for taking the time in writing the above. Will call the local Aerus dealer today and see if he has the hose in stock, otherwise will order from the link you provided. We have a L-shape power head that came with the 2100. I inspected the PN2 power head and cleaned it, roller and roller bearings. The roller bearings are getting there in the wear department and I was able to find a set on Ebay to have on hand. The PN2 we still keep on hand came with the original 1205 which is no more. The PN2 worked fine running on the 2100 as well so it's a keeper until it becomes unrepairable.

Generally I make it a practice to remove my hoses and hang them in a loop to minimize strain.

I will still need to get another set of brushes for the 1401B but am a bit concerned about the armature since it appears to have a slight dish to it. Not sure if it is still in spec or a shop that will true a small armature. Maybe I can luck out and find a NOS one online sometime.

Thanks,
Bill

Rob,

I did try to place an order for the Aerus hose through youbuy4less.com but their PayPal is broke and no one answers the cell phone there. Did email them about it, if they don't come through will end up ordering a second choice product.

Called the local Aerus dealer this morning also but he didn't seem to know what a model 1401 or a 1205 was. Said he would call the Bristol Va office and see about ordering one in. Think I will pass on this guy.

Later,
Bill

Or U can call Aerus at 1-800-243-9078; the hoses are cheaper there than at the Lux dealer
