I've always wanted a vintage Dyson Brand New in box for my collection. I would have loved a Special Edition of some kind, but really pleased to have this. Enjoy the pics.

Gosh that's one of the first rounds of DC04's that were ever made, probably from early 2000 as there is no donought on the mains lead. The DC04 was the first to have the donought, but within a year Dyson had decided it was causing more problems than it was solving.

Where did you find this cleaner?

Ebay

The cleaner was listed on eBay. I wondered if it was early or late.

The flex sleeve is the original design - you will know that Dyson changed this to one which pointed upwards. Orginal DC04 cleaners had your flex sleeve but with a donought on the mains lead, about 10 inches from where the lead entered the cleaner.

Yours has the first flex sleeve but no donought. I think it was around 2001 when the new flex sleeves were used.

Vintagerepairer Filters...

Did the dc04 ever have the white Non washable H level pre motor filter?? As fitted to the dc05 Or always had the 2 part washable type?? Would it make mine a later model as the instructions are the new type also??

The post motor...

The post motor filter on this is a poly pad like the ones found glued to the post filter Lid on a dc07. I thought it would have been a h lever with the yellow cage??

That's not an early early version. It doesn't have stickers stuck all over it advertising the blockage removal ports / self adjusting head. The clutch has a little plastic arrow sticking out of it to show what setting it's on... Early machines had a black dot instead of the plastic finger notch. Also the very first DC04 machines did not come with washable filters. You had to bin them and replace them. Oh and the sole plate looks like it has the solid plastic wheels instead of the rubber coated ones found on early machines. The only thing that says this isn't a late version is the early style cable sleeve. I'd hazard a guess it's a cross between the early and late machines... Possibly built in the transition period between the two?

Definitely not an early version though

The very early ones have a red cyclone sticker like the DC04 aswell. What do u mean the DC04 had replaceable filters? eh?

The very first DC04 machines didn't have washable filters. You had to throw them away and buy new ones. Similar principle to DC01 AND DC02 machines.

Gawd. I've spent hours on the net trying to find evidence of a DC04 that didn't have washable filters. I remember I once serviced a red and purple one as I remember at the time telling the person when the filer needed changing they could buy a washable upgrade. Here's an example of the style of filter for an early DC05.

The early non washable DC04 filter was the same as this... I think I've found an image of an early cyclone top with the 'H filer' sticker around the rim of the filter opening...

Given that the DC04 yellow/grey was in production for the longest, when all the other DC04 machines had ended production (I do beleive you could still buy these cleaners way into 2003), what I was mean was this was one of the earlier ones as Dyson changed the flex sleeve long befor production ended. But I take on board the comments about the lettering changes.

As for the none-washable filters, there is a bit of a story behind that. The DC01 as we know had a side-filter which required replacement every three months. The DC04 was supposed to be a major advancement on this, with a filter that lasted 12 months. The DC04 went on sale in very late 1998 / early 1999 and up until then the only thing like a Dyson in terms of competiton was the Electrolux Powersystem cleaner, a range of vacuum cleaners which had all sorts of filters.

But at the same time the DC04 went on sale, so Hoover unveiled their Vortex range of cleaners. Not withstanding the fact that James Dyson went on to sucessfully sue Hoover for design infringment, one of the key selling points of the Hoover was that the filters required no replacement.

Within a very short time Dyson had redesigned it's filters, with reps visiting stores to change the filters in the cleaners that were in stock ready for sale, and fitting new stickers to the fronts of the cleaners which stood on display.

Vintagerepairer I can't thank you enough for confirming about the filters!! I thought I was going mad for a moment lol I KNEW I'd worked on a DC04 that didn't have a washable filter. You're right about them having to be replaced every 12 months... I've found a clearer image of the non washable DC05 filter where you can make out the writing on the filter. IIRC along with the very early DC04 and 05, very early DC03 machines also had a disposable filter that couldn't be washed?

So really we have Hoover to thank for Dyson introducing washable filters lol

Didn't the SilverLime model out live the standard silver/yellow model? I seem to remember that becoming a budget vac alongside the DC07's for around £140. Our local Co-Op stocked them too - they seemed to carry on for years and years!

We have one of the VERY last DC04's to be made, the DC04 silver lime from 2005! Owned it from new for the bargain price of £150 since 2011 xD

Ooh you learn something new everyday Matt :D PS The H level filter cyclone pic supports my theory that the early DC04's had a red cyclone sticker.

Had one of the very first DC07 Standard machines in mint condition and it had a H level filter for the post motor filter

The Silver /Lime did go on a bit, but production didn't start until a good deal of time after the original DC04 cleaners. About a year or more I recall. That is why the "base" model DC04 was not yellow & grey - the "base model" lime & silver as we came to know it came later. The DC04 all floors was the orignal "base model" in that rangefor the first year or so.

And Matt, I know that the DC03 filters changed but to what and what from I don't know. Many thanks for acknowledging my comments.

dc03 filters... vintagerepairer

the dc03 post motor filter has never changed design to my knowledge.

similar story to the dc01/dc04 really in that the original PRE motor filters were not washable and had a limited lifespan of (12 months) i think!

Then later came the dc03 washable filter. the outer casing was NOT washable it was a foam core attached to the top filter housing and split into 2 pieces.

wish i had a pic to demonstrate for you.

wish I had one of these. we got rid of our last dc04 because it kept cutting out. we had washed the filters and checked for blockages and even emptied it but it just kept cutting out so we threw it away. my favourite dysons are the dc01 and dc02 and dc03 and dc04!!!
