Yeah really Cool!

We never had a Miele cylinder sold in the states for $169.00 Not even $200.00
The Electrolux Smart Vac cylinder was sold here as a Eureka Oxygen.
I have a darker blue model, with an electric power nozzle. Last of the two stage motors I think??
The uprights were sold here as well as either Victory, World Vac, or Powerline, or Smart Vac.

Well £170 then is worth £272 now!

And £272 is $352.59.

Yes but the U.S never got the higher powered vacs that we used to get in the U.K, either.

Yes, we did

get European machines rated at 1400 watts, or 12 amps. from AB-Lux, and 1600 waters from Miele by the 90's.
Our A/C current is 120 volts @ 60 cycles, so maybe the motors don't spool up quite as fast at lower voltage.

Alex,

but what was 170 quid equal to in US dollars back then?
Still no Miele here today for under $400 dollars. One dollar equals about 1.30 euros last I knew. They come from Germany, not the UK.

You might have got 1400 or 1600 but you didn't get the 2000 or 2200 watt vacs that Miele brought over from Germany and sold all through Europe and UK.

What the U.S got as a U.S exclusive were those European Panasonic uprights that the U.S decided to go and rebadge as the Miele 180 (183 etc) Powerhouse uprights.

No, never a 2200 watt vac

over here. Maybe why we have more central vac systems. Anything above 15 amps runs on 220 volts. Some big houses even have twin motor units.
You can run a 2 phase motor on 120 volts, but it will draw more load on the circuit. My table saw can do that. It has a junction box you open and move two wires inside to choose 120 or 220 volts to the motor.
I use the circuit for the electric clothes dryer because mine is gas. I also have a dust collection system which powers up when I switch on the saw, but is a 120 volt capacitor start motor.

You can get a Miele cheaper than that. The current entry level Miele can be picked up for £110, which is $145.88.

The table saw motor will draw the same power on 120V or 220V-Typical saw motors are 13A @120V Strap it for 220-240V the current is halved-but the wattage is the same-6.5A@ 220-240V.If you are running the saw from 240V 15A outlet-you may be able to run the dust collector from the same outlet if it can run from 240V.That is if the dust catcher motor is 1/2 Hp-7A 120V,3.5A 240V.If you are on 120V you will need separate circuits to run the saw and dust catcher.

The maximum wattage allowed for a vacuum sold in North America is 1440watts (120 volts x 12 amps).

You can find good deals on basic Miele classic canisters here. I bought a Miele C1 with deluxe AirTeq carpet nozzle AND hand turbo nozzle for CAD$349 at Canadian Tire here in Montreal.
