I just got a Royal Everlast 8300 in almost brand new mint condition. So I was checking it out and I removed the brushroll. Problem is that I don't know how to adjust the brush roll height. This brush roll has the Hex end caps with markings on just one side. I can't find documentation anywhere that describes how to set brush roll height.

Any Royal enthusiasts out there that can tell me ho to do this?

While I'm at it I might as well post a few pictures of the latest addition to my collection.

This is a Royal Everlast 8300 in almost band new condition. At 10 Amps, It is certainly a BEAST! I thought my Kirby Sentria was a powerful machine, but it doesn't come close to this Royal when it comes to Raw Power! The amount of airflow the Royal has is incredible. But power isn't everything when it comes to cleaning, and we will have to see how it stacks up against the Sentria when it comes down to cleaning ability.

Well Doug, I paid a friend who is also a fellow collector $100.00. He had picked it up at a Goodwill store for $12.97. Can you imagine someone donated this Beauty to Goodwill? I had been wanting one of these for quite some time but could not afford to pay the full retail price of $769.00, so I jumped on it. It came with 10 Royal Aire high filtration bags, 3 new belts, and the belt lifter tool.

I really wanted one of the newer Royals for my collection because not only do I love how it looks, but I had also been hearing about how the newer 9 and 10 amp Royals were sucking up a lot of dirt that the Kirbys were leaving behind. Yes, at 10 Amps this baby is loud, but I love the sound of Raw Power. Now I will have the chance to test it against my Heritage II Legend, G3, and Sentria to see how well the Royal does against my Kirbys in my own home.

Nice find. At $12.97, your friend absolutely stole it! I just love shiny metal vacuums--and other appliances, for that matter.

It is truly amazing what people will discard. Last spring, I picked up a practically new looking Kirby GSix with a complete basic set of accessories (no carpet shampooer, floor waxer, sander, massager, or anything like that) at Goodwill for $50. I already had a GSix that I'd rescued from a dumpster a couple of years earlier and had recently acquired a G5 that I was fixing up, so I needed another one like I needed another hole in my head, but it was so pretty I just couldn't pass it up.

Apparently, the "fatal flaw" for the previous owner was a AA battery lodged in the nozzle that prevented the brush roll from turning and caused the belt to get stretched out. The battery actually fell out of the nozzle at the store and I had extra belts on hand so it was a three-minute fix, including replacing the half-full bag.

Edgar, I can sympathise with you 100%. I know just how you felt. This Royal was so shiny and pretty. I just had to have it.

I also know how the dumpster find goes as that is how I got my G3. The brush roll was seized up with hair and string causing the belt to snap. I replaced the brush roll and belt with new ones, put in a new bag, shined it up and now it purrs like a kitten (it's much quieter than my Sentria) and is an excellent cleaning machine.

The Hex ends are numbered 1,2,3 on several sides of the hex end cap. The higher the number extends the brushes past the rug guard. Position so the same number is visible on each end looking down into the nozzle. The ends spin independently of each other. Hope that helps

There is a long and short side to the agitator make sure to position the agitator so that the belt is covered by the wide cross bar in the rug guard when the guard is replaced.

Congratulations on your new Royal Everlast! You certainly got a good deal paying only $100 dollars for it from a fellow collector.

You will find, though, that your Royal Everlast will outclean the Sentria in carpet cleaning. The brushroll is much more aggressive on the Royal & does a better job grooming. That, and how much lighter the Royal is without needing a Tech Drive, makes me think I could never see myself buying a Kirby ever again, unless a new Royal wasn't a option.

In my opinion, the ONLY reasons why the Royal Metal uprights got a Silver rating from the Carpet & Rug Institute instead of Gold was: 1. The brushroll was so aggressive, it caused the carpet to wear faster than the Kirby, & 2. It released more dust into the air. Chances are the Royal was most likely tested with a paper bag & they weren't aware the Style B Cloth HEPA bags were available for the Royal....if they had & tested the Royal with them, it would have scored the same for dust emissions as the Kirby. Considering the CRI's testing criteria & ratings system takes into consideration how much dirt the vacuum removes, how much it changes carpet appearance & how much dust the vacuum releases into the air, this would explain why the Royal rated slightly lower, despite being the better cleaner.

Rob

Hi Stan

kirbymodel2c's profile picture

Well done on getting a a Royal Everlast 8300. I have the same model as you. I got mine of a collector on here.

I bought the deluxe attachment set for it as well. I'm still looking to get the original scent crystals that go in the chamber in the head. I do like that feature.smile

I do like the Royal metal uprights. I might get a 880 at some point. That's a very nice looking vacuum cleaner.

However I'm still well seated in the Kirby camp. I'd take one of those over the Royal. The Everlast may be more aggressive than the Sentria but it doesn't mean it cleans better. Especially at the possible expense of it wearing the carpet more.

Plus I love the Kirby techdrive and find it easier to use the hose on the Kirby. Not to mention I can do more with the Kirby and it's quiter than the Everlast 8300.

I know Royal have slimed their domestic Metal uprights down to just this model going on their website.

I hope that don't mean they will stop making it over the coming decadesfrown I use to like the look of the 8200 as well.

I use both the Kirby Avalir and Sentrias as well as the Royals.Right now a Royal Pro Elite-the obnly residentual upright Royal now makes in the metal line.Rest are the commercial ones. The Pro Elite comes with a 3 pin cord-but the owners book and on the machine warns the warrantee is invalidated if the Pro Elite is used commercially.I have some commercial Royals, too.like them all.think their performance for me is about equal.I hope the metal Royals continue to be built-one of the BEST carpet vacuums out there!Even if they discontinue the residentual ones-think the commercial ones will still be available.

I do need to correct myself on the brush adjustment The cap ends on the brush roll have 2 settings to extend the brushes past the rug guard. those are on the flat side of the end cap of the agitator. It has been a while since I had the royals at work and realized later that it is only 2. The 3 positions are on the Kirby.

Thank you everyone for all your positive and helpful comments on my new Royal 8300.

Kirby519: Yes, I found that there only 2 brush roll adjustment positions. There are 2 raised ridges on each endcap of the brush roll. Those ridges can be either facing outward toward you or inward toward the back of the rug nozzle. I believe facing outward is for a new brush roll and facing inward for an older one in need of extending the brushes past the rug plate.

Update: Someone gave me a Royal hose with no attachments so I was hoping to be able to use all my Kirby attachments with the Royal. Well of course the diameter of the Kirby attachments is about 1/16" smaller than the diameter of the Royal hose. I was able to locate a vacuum hose adapter on Amazon.com so I ordered it. So with a small modification to the adapter, I was able to get it to work. Now I'm a happy camper because I am now able to use all the Kirby attachments and wands on the Royal Everlast 8300.

Kirby attachments wont fit on the royal.

I do have 2 complete sets of Deluxe attachments in the boxes. Slight used but in good shape for 15 yrs old. If interested you can contact me.

Royal attachments

I may be interested in one of those sets from the previous post. What color are these sets? Does the set include the adapter that goes in the machine and the hose attaches? How much are you asking?
You can contact me at rbwoodlawn@aol.com if you prefer.

If you don't mind, would you please post a link to the adapter you purchased on Amazon.com? I have been looking for one for my Royal hose, too. The local vac shop suggested a black adapter they sell that works with Filter Queen & also Panasonic & Riccar/Simplicity uprights. But in this case, it fits the wand & adapts it, but NOT the hose. I was thinking a proper Filter Queen adapter would work though....there used to be a white one with 2 pins that was a generic adapter available thru vac shops....but that has become rather hard to find now.

James - Sorry, couldn't disagree with you more if I tried! If you tried a Kirby G series, in proper working order with a new brush that's been properly adjusted, there's no way you would say it's the better cleaner. The brushrolls available for the Kirby G series don't agitate the carpet nearly as well as the Royal, unless they are set at position 3 for maximum wear. Plus the Royal is on high speed all functions, whereas the Kirby always runs on low speed for carpet cleaning, & the fan on the Royal is METAL & the blades are deeper & move more airflow. And of course, no mini emtor to trap dirt, dirt goes directly into the bag on the Royal. I would much rather wear out the carpet a little faster & know they are properly cleaned.

Steve: I guess you didn't fully read my post #16. If you had you would have read that I am successfully using my Kirby attachments on my Royal with an adapter I got from Amazon.com. I had to spend about 10 minutes with a nail file, filing down the small ridge on the adapter so it would fit into the Royal hose.

Rob: Here is the link for the adapter on Amazon:

www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MKJ...

James: I love my Sentria but it does not clean as well as my new Royal 8300. I have done some tests that prove it with sand and coffee grounds. Not only is the Royal much lighter but as Rob says it is always running on high speed all the time. If the brush roll is installed properly, it does indeed sort of self propel itself in the forward direction. Now I cas use all my Kirby attachments on the Royal. I think it is the best carpet cleaner out there with the Sentria in close second place.

Well

kirbymodel2c's profile picture

Rob it looks like we disagree. I'd rather have a deep cleaner that deep cleans with out wearing out the carpet quicker laughing. I still know my carpets are properly deep cleaned with something that's more versatile.

It would be interesting to see the technical results from CRI and compare them side by side instead of looking at peoples various home tests on youtube etc. I wonder if they will release the data?

@ sptyks

Sorry.

I had skimmed the message as I was also in a another conversation. Only indicated that they are not interchangeable. Unless of course you locate an adapter as you have. And stated I do have 2 complete sets of attachments.

Steve

@veroroger

The two sets of Royal attachments are a charcoal grey color. Both sets are complete with the adaptor to connect to the machine. both chrome metal wands, crevice tool, dusting tool, Furniture nozzle and hard floor/wall brush and attachment box. The only thing I don't have is the belt lifer tool.

All have had some use in a commercial environment. But do show little wear as they weren't used often or abused. And stored in our shop after that. I can post some pictures if you like.

I would be glad to talk price and payment arrangements in private messaging. I don't have a pay pal account as I don't buy and sell on line often enough to justify setting up an account.

Steve.
