I'm going to start a Kirby DS 50 restoration soon. I'm curious if the small plastic, clear oval that lights up can be removed so that the headlight casting can be sanded and polished easily. Any ideas, or should I try to work around it and leave it in place?

It can be removed!

I saw a youtube video on how to remove it a few months ago.

Try subscribing to "Nicevacs" or "Nice Vacs" on youtube. I think that's where I saw it.

Thanks,

but it looks a bit dicey. I don't want to break off a tab. I'll give it a bit of pressure from underneath, but if it's too stiff, I'll work around it.

That's Ok. Was just trying to help. I never did this myself either. I was lucky enough to get a factory refurbished (1989) DS50 that had been only very slightly used then put in storage for years until I won it on ebay with all the tools for $52.00 in 2012. I have 5 Kirbys in my collection and that shiny little DS50 is my favorite.
