I would love to get my hands on one of the lightweight uprights from Tacony (Riccar Supralite, Simplicity Freedom, Speedy Maid from Fuller Brush or M500 from Maytag), but the only vacuum I have is a straight-suction Dirt Devil canister (link below), while there are carpets in my house. Sometimes, my father lends me his bagless Bissell upright for the carpets, but I don't trust the machine much, since it's a cheap model like the ones we find at Walmart and I like quality stuff.

In the thread I posted about my Dirt Devil, some people suggested that I get a turbo brush for my canister, but do any of you believe that even an entry-modeled Freedom or Supralite upright would outperform a Chinese-made TTI canister with a turbo brush from Wessel Werk or my father's Bissell? Should I get one of the Tacony lightweight uprights if I had enough money?

Raymond...salut de Montreal!

You can get a better lightweight upright vacuum in the Hoover Platinum bagged upright which is available at any Canadian Sears store. It's quieter than the Tacony and performs just as well. The bags are easy to find at any Sears store, and it has a very long cord - over 30 feet. It is also less expensive than the other lightwight uprights by Simplicity, Riccar and Aerus.

It comes with a second portable canister vacuum that is not that great: very noisy and poor suction. But it's always handy to have to clean out your car. I plan to sell mine on eBay for $20 just to get it out of the way.

Sears often has this Hoover package on sale: I got mine for $340! Better to buy one now before Sears raises their prices due to the falling Canadian dollar...:-)

Here is the Sears Canada webpage:

That Hoover is a great option and performer. Search eBay. They have the manufacturer refurbished machines for $100 or less sometimes.

$340 is about $140 more then you can get a simplicity freedom for. The Hoover bags come to an a package for $10. The freedom HEPA bags come six and a package for $18. Having both the Hoover and the simplicity, I feel the simplicity cleans much better.

The Hoover bagged Platinum upright looks like crap. I think the upright models from Soniclean are better. Soniclean should compete against Tacony.

Ebay

would be a good source for a gently used Riccar/Simplicity lite weight.

Soniclean would not be able to support their machine with parts as soon as they discontinue making it. Plus, there are very few places equipped to work on Soniclean, as opposed to thousands of dealers for Tacony products. The Factory Outlet Store, here at the world's only Vacuum Cleaner Museum would also be happy to help with the purchase.

I have not used a Soniclean, but I have used both the Hoover and a F3600 Simplicity Freedom.

I'd definitely go for a Riccar/Simplicity over the Hoover i was not too impressed with the performance of the Hoover, plus each one i've seen either had or developed Circuit board issues, i ended up bypassing the one in mine and just installing a push switch.

turbo brushes

I would go for the upright if you have lots of carpets. While a canister vacuum with a turbo brush sounds good, those turbo brushes really do not clean very well because they have a very small hole for the dirt to go through. This is done so all of the air goes through the turbine to spin it. If you need a spinning brush, get an upright or a canister with an electric power nozzle.

Yes, turbo brushes actually employ a similar usage to dirty fan uprights - i.e where the dirt goes through the fan, despite a smaller hole. I would suggest that you keep the Dirt Devil as a canister only for cleaning above the floor line or usage in the car. Otherwise an upright with a power brush roll will probably suit you fine for all around home carpet cleaning.
