Seriously, if a motor works then there is no need at all to touch the commutator at all, not least with sand paper of any type or grade. |

I've always done it. Sometimes with steel wool. Might as well clean it if i'm in there. |

No, that's my point. The "dirt" is not a problem at all to the performance of the motor. Cleaning the commutator is, because any scratches in it can increase carbon brush wear and also the chance of arcing (which can lead to motor faliure). |
