I have a 1930 -- I think -- Hoover model 725. It belonged to my grandparents, who used it in their cottage until 1973, when I got it. Since then it's been used on a regular basis until about 5 years ago. Now we only use it on the upstairs rugs. My question: while works great and the motor souncds good, I think it probably needs to be serviced. I'm hesitant to do this, as I'm thinking they'll tell me it's too old to do anything. There are pencil notes on the body and it was last serviced in 1985 (and about every 5 years before that.) How can I best keep this old beast running? I've gotten pretty gond of it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The comprehensive service manual for Hoovers built up through about 1957 is posted for sale, for $8.99, on automatice.org. Yes, a vacuum shop would probably laugh at you and turn you away, but it doesn't hurt to try - who knows, they may just service it for you. Keep in mind though that service parts including agitator brushes and a bag are long NLA. If trying that fails, there are step by step instructions on how to lubricate/service these old machines within the service manual I mentioned. You cold always try to do it yourself.
