I have a Montgomery Ward Hand Vacuum. Not sure the model number, but it is pinkish and white with a brown bag. I purchased this machine off ebay last Fall and it does not work at all. I have been super busy, so I was not able to take it to the vacuum shop until now. I did get my full refund, since the user never plugged it in to make sure it works. It came also with the original instruction manual as well.

The people at the vacuum shop told me the motor looks good and that the machine is in good condition. The problem is the switch. They told me that something got under the switch and that is what broke it. They did say it is fixable, but it will not look like the way it looks now. They suggested I keep it as a showcase model.

What do you guys think? Should I keep it as a showcase model or should I try to sell it? I've been thinking that if it does not work, then why even have it.

A more recent parts breakdown for the 501.

The most recent replacement part for the switch on your machine would have been #1-110302-000. The bag gasket was part #1-501409-000. Again, I wish you luck in restoring this!

I don't think it's fixable, due to those parts not being available anymore. So I am just going to keep it as a showcase model. If I ever come across another pink and white Wards on ebay, I may just donate the one I have now and buy that one. But it will take time, as those are very rare. It did come with the instruction guide, which is a plus. The user should have tested it. But oh well. For now, I will just keep it as a showcase model.

Also, I washed the bag and discovered there are two holes in the bag. So it really can't be used anymore. It's broken, but that's fine.

If it is the toggle switch that is broken & need repaired, why not try & use a Royal Metal upright power toggle switch? Those switches are still available & I bet would most likely fit your hand vacuum.

I don't have a Royal Upright Vacuum.

How 'bout the cord?

The cord does not have any issues. It's the switch that has issues.

3 things spring to mind ~

1 ~ Failed cord

2 ~ Failed switch

3 ~ Carbon brushes need replacing. If you do end up replacing the brushes I suggest cleaning the commutator while you're in there.
