Why do people hate them? My $300 595 performs better than some full sized vacs. I'll include pictures of most of my 6 roombas as 2 are being repaired by me. Please exuse some hairs as roombas treat their brushes as a loom for hairy blankets.

gave up on mine because the long dog hair would get wound up in the wheel axles rendering it pretty much useless at our house.

What upright vacuum are you comparing the Roomba to?Keep in mind the Roomba or other types of automated handleless cleaners are nothing more than motorized SWEEPERS rather than a vacuum cleaner.Think of the Roomba as a motorized-automated version of a Hokey sweeper. These machines CANNOT deep clean carpets as an upright or a canister with a powernozzle can.Bet if you run your upright AFTER the Roomba you will be SHOCKED at what the Roomba left behind. They are a great novelty and maybe good for day-to day sweeping-but you will need your vacuum for the more thorough deep cleaning. And YOU control where the vacuum goes!Roombas are fun to watch-but thats about it.And saw many of them at the Bed,Bath Beyond return pile.

I think they are kind of cool

They would be great for the chasing the cat factor.
As others here have said, and even the Roomba literature states. "It will not replace a regular vacuum", but it does do a great job as a surface cleaner.

I have always wanted one, just for fun. I vacuum every night, sometimes a couple of times a day due to a long haired dog and cat in the house. Having read that long hair is the Roomba's nemesis, the very thing I would want it for, surface cleaning of pet hair, is the very thing that will kill it's effectiveness.

Comparing to windtunnel air. The roomba fliled its bin after air. I use roomba every day and use a full size on the weekend. Really helps keep it clean. Not a full sized replacement tho. I'm saying its can help keep it looking nice when ur to busy to clean.

Roomba's are fun to watch! My aunt uses one so she doesn't have to vacuum everyday, she only vacuums with her shark once a week. It does not have suction or deep clean. And it bogs down on the shag carpeting in the bedrooms.

They do great for daily carpet maintenance, but I wouldn't use one as the main vacuum.

I never have gotten why so many people here hate these things... They're meant for daily maintenance, not to get all the grit out of the damn carpet. Let's face it, most people (consumers) aren't gonna vacuum everyday, hell even I as a collector have many things I'd rather do than vacuum daily. Best thing with these is to do a deep maintenance clean before you run it, then let it run daily. It keeps surface dirt from being ground into the carpet, as well as keeping hard floors nearly spotless. I mostly prefer Neato, but the Botvacs are too expensive currently, XV series are too problematic. Roomba is a cute, endearing little thing that's easy to tear down and replace parts on (at least in the modular 500+ series robots, older ones still aren't that bad.) And at the end of the day, these robots will still clean better than most consumers making only quick one pass cleaning sessions with a vacuum in near complete disrepair...

Some videos on YouTube use the Roomba machines as dog and cat toys-Dogs like to play with them, and cats like to ride them. vacuum with my Kirby Avalir daily and my Royal Pro Elite. One a week with a canister-the NSS M1.

The thing that always put me off these was, what if the cat puked or spat up a hairball, and the Roomba got to it before I did?

THIS would be my worst nightmare:

I read somewhere about another Roomba vs dog poop-the machine smeared it over the floor-owner executed the Roomba with his shotgun!I would suppose the mess could be cleaned up.Lesson here-if the dog is in the home alone-Don't let the Roomba work unattended!Would be neat on future Roombas-they could be made to detect the poop, cat barf,or hairballs and shut down if they detect such things!Would be easier for "master" to clean up and no swearing at the pet or the Roomba machine.Would think this could be possible with the new odor detecting chips!

robot vacuum

I have a neato robotics XV 12, I prefer these over the roomba because it actually maps the rooms rather than just moving around randomly. I have all hard wood floors. Does it clean as good as a regular vacuum, probably not, but there is definitely dirt in the bin when it's done, and that certainly can't hurt anything. It has a vacuum that's actually fairly powerful, kind of sounds like a jet taking off when it starts up. Interestingly, Samsung is selling a robot now at best buy for around $1000, that's a bit much I think.

I have....

A white 410 Discovery, and it does work rather nice on my dark colored carpeting. My only complaint is getting replacement batteries. They are about $60 for genuine batteries and they seem to go out about once a year for me (Not getting heavy use). But by the time that I total up the cost of batteries, and the cost of a unit (And even a replacement charger) it would be cheaper to just stick with an upright.

Drop...

The ancient OEM NiCD/NiMH batteries. Go with the Lithium replacements, they provide longer run time, longer life spans, and are lighter than their equivalent counterparts.

I had a Roomba 530 for a few years that did an admirable job of picking up my dog's copious amounts of hair from the floors in between regular vacuumings in my last home (a townhouse). However, as previous members have mentioned there is no suction and once I moved into my current house (rather large single family) I began to get annoyed at the completely random pattern Roomba appears to take and the lack of suction. I stopped using it altogether and just chose to use the "hide a hose" on my central vac or Dyson DC59 animal to clean the hardwood floors daily. With a crazy work schedule and an aversion to seeing dog hair on my floors, I ordered a Neato Botvac from Costco.com. It's no longer available there but I only paid $299 whereas at BBB models range in price from $400 - $500. I must say, the Neato Botvac blows the Roomba out of the water! First of all, there's actually suction with the Neato. Secondly, it actually "sees" the room and doesn't randomly bounce on and off walls and furniture. It's very methodical and when it begins to lose its charge it will return to its base, recharge, and then it RETURNS to where it left off to finish cleaning! How cool is that!? Bottom line - if it broke tomorrow I'd buy another one in a heartbeat!

roomba and neato

I had a Roomba 500 series a few years back, it was ok but once I tried the neato, I was sold. The neato robots actually do have a pretty powerful fan in them to create the suction. On all hardwood floors, I get about 90 minutes of run time per charge.

I did just buy a replacement battery (Lithium) and Im only still getting about 20 minutes of runtime. Could there be something wrong with my charger or Roomba itself?

They're pretty expensive. I mean, I'd need 3. And then that would be 3 precious outlets eaten up. And they can't handle clutter, so they're useless for anyone with small kids (me).

I get the idea. I doubt that it outperforms any upright that's in working order.

wersion of the Roomba. She likes to see it 'return to the charger", etc. I think her husband (loves toys like this) uses it as entertainment.
I saw a brand new one on sale at K-Mart for......$75.00 I was more surprised at that than the machine itself.
Of course, they might be great for a daily "quickie", but at least once a week, you must get out your Hoover.... or something else and give the place a good going through.

lithium battery for roomba

Interesting that you found a lithium battery for the Roomba. Since it normally uses NIMH batteries, the charging algorithm that the charger uses would be optimized for that type of battery. Then again, I remember an old cell phone I had, it originally came with a NIMH battery but a lithium ion battery was available and you could use the same charger, so I guess it's possible.

I have always wanted a Roomba

Even though I vacuum every day, sometimes more due to an American Eskimo dog and a long haired cat.

I think the Roomba would be fun if for nothing else the chase the cat factor. But he actually likes the vacuum and will lay down in front of it and not move. If I had one, my Melvin would be one of those that rides on top as it goes around the room.

Everyone who has seen my Neato Botvac has been dazzled by it. I have 3 friends who now have Neatos in their homes after I demoed mine. While it's not as powerful as an upright, it takes its slow, methodical time, and always gets a ton of dirt. It's not perfect (the filter is gross to clean, so I just vacuum it off with my Dyson hand vac), but it's years ahead of other robots, and it's become something I wouldn't want to live without.

Been busy lately, and have let the Neato do 100% of the vacuuming the last two weeks or so. The other day I used my new Dyson Ball Multi Floor (one of their best cleaning 2015 models), and it got almost nothing. The Neato is taking care of business. The older Neatos clean just as well, but the much longer battery life on the Botvac and Botvac D Series models, lets it finish cleaning a lot quicker.

Dyson's 360 Eye robot is coming out eventually, and although it'll have better filtration, I would be genuinely surprised if it cleaned carpeting better than a Neato. Neato's got a suction motor (admittedly gentle, but it suffices), and a good brushroll for a robot, so it does a great job. Again, I'm always surprised!

As a bonus "run the robot" has become a household term here, like it's 50 years into the future! "I didn't have much time to get ready, so I just ran the robot and filled the dishwasher."

Well, here's a factor... close your eyes if you're not into squeamish things!

Yes, whilst these fantastic labour saving things are all very well, when our 4 legged friends have an accident in the home, suddenly the labour saving cleaning device isn't so handy after all.

Neato would have smeared the poop around in straight lines. Neato doesn't clean in a nonsensical pattern like the evidence displays. Looks like a Roomba or some crappier bot. I could be wrong, but that pug owner may have been fibbing, or the pictures are unrelated.

I've posted this before, but here is the Neato XV's cleaning action.

The second photo wasn't taken with a Neato disc, but rather shows what can happen with ANY ROBOTIC DISC.

Straight lines or not, I can't think of anything worse. At least you're in control when you have a traditional vacuum.

Respectively if I had a roomba or any robotic vacuum, I wouldn't be collecting "manual job" vacuums, any way.

before you smear misinformation. While that scenario is possible, it would be different with the robot displayed in your first picture.

We can all imagine worst-case scenarios. It's up to the owners to prevent such things from happening. Dwell, and you'll forget the benefits of products that push the market forward, and excite the masses.

"Respectively if I had a roomba or any robotic vacuum, I wouldn't be collecting "manual job" vacuums, any way." In regards to that statement, I celebrate the old and the new. Robotic cleaners fascinate me (sorry, not sorry!). I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Sorry but its not up to the owners. One would expect that owners will teach pets not to deposit accidents, but it can happen with all the will in the world.

Im all for robotic vacuums though. Until they offer up a model that can clean above the floor line and effectively take over from the main task, I remain unconvinced. After all if you own a car, you can't exactly use a Roomba in that.

There's still plenty of enough reason to why manual vacuums are better.

I agree with you Nar. There isn't a Robotic vacuum on the market today that can deep clean a carpet like a good manual upright vacuum can. They are really only useful on hard flooring.
