Hi people and thanks in advance for any help you can assist me with.

The light on my Riccar Immacualte Canister was blinking to "Service Filter".
So I assume that means to replace the HEPA filter that filters exaust on the top of the machine.
I did purchase (when I bought the vacuum) a spare HEPA filter.

In the package was the main filter for the exaust and a "Charcoal" filter (kind of looks like a Schotch Bright scruby pad with a nothch cut out).

Where does this "Charcoal" filter go?

In the instructions it says it goes behind the bag but what's behind the bag now is a hard plastic snap in activated charcoal filter, it's all one unit.
I can't detach the filter from the hard plastic frame.

Do I need to buy a different pre-motor filter (hard plastic framed snap in filter) or am I missing something here?

The filter on the left is what's currently behind the bag now, the one on the right came in the box with the exaust filter.

I'm confused.

I would have thought the cage opens up but I'm sure someone on here will be able to advise you further.

Say open the filter case. It has to open. Post a picture of the case.

Here is the premotor filter.
It seems like it's one solid unit. I can feel the spines all the way through to the other side of the filter.
You can also hear the charcoal beads when you shake the cartridge.
It's like each square is it's own little compartment that holds the activated charcoal.
It also seems glued in.

My guess would be that the "scrubby pad" filter that came in the package along with the HEPA filter, that would have been for the Riccar 1800 & it's Simplicity equivalent, the prior models to the Riccar Immaculate & Impeccable. My thinking is that Tacony added the charcoal filter, using it as a pre-filter, to copy Miele's charcoal filter....just in a slightly different way. They probably include the "scrubby pad" filter in the HEPA filter package in case someone is using it in the Riccar 1800. You will have to order a separate activated charcoal filter specifically for the Immaculate & Impeccable, if you desire to replace it. I personally would replace the HEPA & activated charcoal filters at the same time, as a set, & assume that both are "used up" & need replacement.

Kirbyloverdan....I think Georgect was referring to the activated charcoal filter being glued into it's filter frame, & that it comes as a unit, NOT that the filter is glued into the vacuum's housing.

Rob is correct. About a year and a half ago, they started using the premotor charcoal filter as a complete unit. What is included in the box is for the older models. The reason the light on the hose handle is flashing, is because the machine has run 25 hours. It does not necessarily mean that The HEPA filter needs to be replaced. The company feels that, at 25 hours of running, the HEPA filter has enough carbon dust to need to be replaced.

About it being glued into the filter frame I own 3 of those canisters ;) I know it's not stuck to the machine .

The heat from vacuum makes it stick I pulled mine from frame to replace .

The switch to the activated charcoal filter came about a year and a half ago. Most dealers have not had the opportunity to sell a replacement yet, perhaps that's why they don't carry them yet.

Update...Filter Price

georgect's profile picture
My vacuum sales guy called and said the filter came in from the special order.
I asked how much it would be and he said it was in the $6 range. I forget the exact price he quoted me.
I'll pick it up on Monday and also pick up another exaust HEPA exaust filter.

I used to have a Riccar 1700 canister, they are fantastic machines. Tom was helpful when the check filter light came on for my machine.

The premotor filter does not effect the check filter light though. The premotor filter is just just a holder for the filter. The filter should fit under a few tabs inside the holder. It should release and pull out of the holder. The filters that I remember were 2 layers of white with a charcoal middle. The charcoal acts as an odor eater to keep an odors caused by stale dirt collecting in the bag over time to a minimum.

The post motor filter on the machine is the HEPA. It is in the little cage between your power button and cord rewind button. Somewhere to the side of the HEPA exhaust is a small button for you to push which resets the 25 hour timer that Tom mentioned which reminds you to check the filter. I think I used to replace the filter around 40-60 hours. I checked it a few weeks after the filter light went on and after I reset it.

As long as filters look relatively clean, you're in good shape and can basically replace them as needed. The filter check lights are a little time sensitive to me with the 25 hours but for some households where owners aren't near as particular as us collectors in the use of our vacuums or other areas that are heavy dust the filter check light is a great feature!!

The filter set below on Amazon.com looks like what I used to put into the Riccar 1700.
