Just got this in today. Turned it on and when the cord was stretched at all the vacuum cut off. I tried it more then once and it kept happening. It would not come back on immediately. it would have to sit for 5 min then it would come back on but would cut off as soon as I started vacuuming again. I started to just turn it on and left it still then would pull more cord out then it would stall and cut off. Is this a problem due to the cord? Could it be anything else? This was what was on the listing. What should I do? I sent her a message saying that it keeps cutting off and that something is wrong. Would you guys try to return it? Get some money off or what?

Sounds like a bad cord winder, not uncommon I think??

I think money off would be how I'd try to handle it. I do believe that these had cord winder issues, if I'm not mistaken. Didn't you already have to buy a new hose for it as well?

@Cara

sounds like either a bad cord or loose connections.

Yes I did need to buy a new hose. $145.00. As you can see in the add the hose was taped up. Any idea how much a cord reel is?

This is what she sent me like I'm some novice or something. i know enough to put a bag in and to make sure its plugged into the wall...sigh...

Hello, Very sorry to hear you are having some issues with the vacuum. Everything worked normal when we checked and tested it. From what you are saying some possbile reasons could be 1 the vacuum didnt have a disposable bag installed when sent due to no extra bags to replace after we tested, Some vacs have sensors that will either not let vacuum run or will cut the unit off if a bag is not installed. 2 When the cord is stretched out is it coming out of the wall plug slightly? I dont have a manual for this but will try and see what I can find out for you,

It could be a number of things, Cara. Not least for the original listing that states it all: "power nozzle has been taped up, though cracked and taped."

Given that you have already bought a hose it could also be a problem with the Power nozzle handle. Even if a crack has been taped up, any kind of movement can affect the circuitry. Of course it depends on how deep that crack is. But still, I would expect some money off for the actual trouble the Miele is giving you and how it actually can't be used for reliable cleaning with.

I took the hose off and just plugged the vacuum into the wall. I turn it on, it comes on, pulled the cord and it shuts off. I made a movie of it and sent it to the woman. Its the cord reel I believe. Does anyone know how much a new cord reel is for a miele platinum? He is the proof.

reminds me of the silver moon...

My silver moon had an issue with the cord winder, and it was missing the plug. So i took it to a dealer in Fergus Falls and he was able to fix the winder with an o ring. I'd call some area dealers and see if they are able to repair it.

Miele

I think this is a simple problem with cordwinder contacts as the reel turns and should NOT require a new reel. The fix seems to be a spacer/washer added at the right place.Try to find someone nearby who has done this.It would be easy to overlook by the seller if it were not in normal use. Some partial refund might be in order to cover a reasonable repair charge. You will most likely end up with a very good vac at a very good price.Good luck.

Change th3 cord first. I've had a few miele cylinders that did this, the cord had broken where it enters the reel from repeated pulling. Was quite easy to change and sorted it right out

I replaced the cord reel and it worked like a charm!! No more cutting out!! Rugsucker I did notice too that this newer cord reel had a washer which the other one didn't. I didn't want to take it to my local vac store because I don't trust him. I think I got off cheaper this way. Thank you all!! :)

I remember the Oreck/Miele store I worked in charged $125.00 for a new cord reel on Mieles, there may have been labor on top of that. I didn't work on them myself, but I did sell the crap out of them! I'm sure you saved money over taking it to a vac shop, and lucky you could do the repair yourself.

Thank you!! I am very grateful it works as good as new. You do take some pride in something when you can repair it yourself. It really was quite easy. That particular machine is very easy to take apart. It was a very easy part to replace. I think the vacuum guys would have taken advantage of me because I'm a woman and they are not doing as well these days because so many people can get a much better deal online. It still is nice to go to a shop and get a hands on and good look at something in person. I would personally love to get my hands on an old hoover sensotronic. I guess it would be hard to get the parts if it broke down though. This one was hard enough to get and the platinums are not that old!

I think the Platinum is one of the best Mieles ever made. I believe it was their first machine to have the "direct connect" wand and powerhead - no pigtail running up the wand. I still prefer the Platinum to my Earth that I got about two years ago. Not a fan of the new hose configuration, I like the Platinum - how the hose swivels at the machine and the handle. Much more convenient. I also haven't gotten used the the feel of the new handle, and the undersized tools. I've had my Miele Platinum for about 12 years now, bought it for $300, it was the floor model at a vacuum store I used to work at. It got very regular use for quite a long time; I still pull it down from the shelef every now and then.

Congrats on fixing your cord winder, too! Taking that style Miele apart is like playing with Legos; it all snaps together really easily. That's good design.

Happy Vacuuming!
