I need the felt gasket to be replaced on my 519 Kirby sani -emptor -which I just somewhat crudely fitted a fill tube inside for G-3 type bags. Does Kirby still manufacture this felt gasket. or else what is another alternative?

Are you aware that converting a 519 to use paper bags will reduce performance by 15-25%?

Emtor tray gasket

Get a new emtor tray. Easier and better. Hard to get gasket in even so it doesn't leak dust and dirt. I have never had good luck putting in a gasket. That seal is most important for clean vacuuming.

I'd love to see how you made this Setup! Could you post a pic or two? :)

to Oldkirbyman and Dandagreer

Thanks for the heads up about replacing the felt gasket ; I wouldn't want to waste the money and then have all that trouble.
I wish I would have taken photos of the process of installing the Heritage II fill tube in the 500-series sani-emptor, but unfortunately , I have never posted pics on this forum before. I used a hacksaw to cut the top part of the plastic mini-emptor and then cut that top part in three different places in order to fit inside the wide opening of the old sani-emptor. I found an old plastic cereal bowl in which the bottom fit perfectly inside the top wide round opening ; so I cut it off to fit. Then I cut a hole in that plastic circular piece for the filltube(first measuring the width of the hole). The top piece cut from the mini-emptor with filltube was then attached to the circular piece. I drilled one hole for a small short screw to secure the two pieces together. Alot of silicone caulk was used for a tight seal around the edges and to secure it in place on both sides top and bottom. I cut a round piece of corrigated cardboard to fit around the top base and filltube , then used alot of duct tape to secure everything and for more of a seal. Before I did all this ; the old metal emptor was washed inside and wirebrushed to get rid of decades of crud. I guess this could be called "redneck engineering"- as I had previously stated , this was crudely done but it works quite well. Plastic mini-emptors can be expensive to replace -from previous experience. The plastic where the rubber gasket is glued to is too thin and cracks. Finally, to get rid of the silicone smell when vacuming; I put some vanilla scent on the paper disposable bag.

I've replaced the felt gasket on all my Kirby (509 thru D80) emptors with no problem what so ever, it's really easy.

Emptor tray gasket

Kirbyrama Bikerray must be an expert --- Save your money. Get a real Kirby emptor tray not a bojack . It's better to pay a little to much then not enough. If your a do-it your selfer putting in a gasket may be good enough. But if you are doing it for a customer repair you would put on a all new tray. It won't come back.. Its what ever way you want to do it. If your going to use it or sit and look at it. If your going to use it-----spend the money and get a new tray.---Greg

I'd have to agree with Bikerray, I've replaced the emptor gasket on dozens of Kirbys and never had a problem with leaking, and it takes about 3 minutes. You can spend extra money to buy a new emptor tray, sure...but it won't be the original gray plastic or black Bakelite, it will be new cheap plastic. To each their own I suppose!

Directions

Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best way to replace the gasket? I really don't want to mess this up.

Thanks in advance!

Joe
