Well, today I decided that I would stop into Savers, one of my favorite local thrift stores, on the way home from a congregational meeting at my church in Tonawanda.  And I have to say, it was a darn good thing that I did because I found one of my most sought-after dream vacuums: the Bicentennial Edition Hoover Convertible model U4085!  Perfect running condition, but pretty dirty inside and out.  Outer bag torn in some spots, but not bad enough to be unusable.  Light bulb burned out: missing the nut and bolt that holds the handle together.

And the price?  A shocking $4.99!  Took it home and cleaned it up -- what a nice machine!  Funny thing I noticed about it is that the previous owner must have become tired of buying paper bags for it, because inside the outer bag was a homemade cloth bag exactly the same size and length as a type C bag!  I promptly threw it out -- but on reflection I think I might rescue it from the trash, wash it, and save it for "show and tell" at a future collectors' get-together!

Bill, congratulations on a great Hoover find there! :-). Always great when we find one of our dream machines, eh? And despite it's slight imperfections, this vacuum looks to be in excellent condition overall.

Enjoy your new find, & Happy Vacuuming with it :-)

Congratulations on your thrifty purchase. What a nifty looking cleaner (reminds me of a school song "Fifty Nifty United States")! It's a good thing that you went to your church meeting--both for the business you accomplished and for the fact that you may not have gone to Savers until after someone else had found the bargain! I'm guessing that it was only sold in 1976 ... or was it beyond that?

Happy Bicentennial Hoovering!

BRAVO, Bill!!

You'll have to bring it to Pittston  for the next meet.  I have a great one too.  I had a bad one also......  it ended up in Scranton.... another story.  I may have told you that one. Regardless,  it is wonderful to find a "must have".  And that price was the deal of the century!!

I remember that song too!  And I guarantee I couldn't get through it today without being seriously out of breath at the end!

Hoover made this machine from '75 to '76, just for the bicentennial.

BTW -- here's the homemade cloth bag that was inside the bag jacket when I bought the cleaner! I've rescued it from the trash and washed it.  Take a look at the pictures: it's actually the length and width of TWO Type C bags PLUS some room at the top for filtration!  I've got to hand it to the previous owner of this machine ... they certainly were creative, if not anything else!

You bet!  It'll be tagging along with me next time I come.  And at that price, there was no way in heck that I could pass it up!
