Just askin':

When I got my bee-you-ti-ful Model L from Nathan, he offered me a cordwinder, and I got all virtuous and told him I preferred the simplicity of a halo instead. He sent me a great machine with exactly what I asked for.

But now that I've lived with the halo a while, I have to admit that the convenience of a cordwinder is kind of sneaking back up on me. What's involved in adding one back to this machine? Does it just install with the halo screws? And does it plug into the same outlet the regular cord I have now does?

Not sure I'm going to change, but I'd like to know what my options are. Thanks!

You're absolutely right in describing the attachment of a cordwinder! If you have the chance to obtain a matching cordwinder, I'd go for it. If it has the original cord/plug, even better. I personally like cordwinders and have them on all my pre built-in cordwinder Electroluxes. Winding the cord can be sooo tedious!!

Sandy..Rick is right. You put the cord winder on just like the halo...two screws and just plug in the cord. Even if you don't like the cord winder, I would get it simiply to add to your collection. It will make the Lux more complete even if you don't use it. :-)

I vascillate between liking Electroluxes with cord winders, and without. To me, they look more balanced without one, especially the later (huge) donut styles on the Late F and L. That huge thing on the end really messes up the clean lines of the machine's housing. The L in particular looks more perky and cuter with the halo.

On the other hand, having the cord winder gives it a more "substantial" look and that's nice too. To solve this dilemma without having to change things around every time my whim changes, I have two each (at least! haha) of LXIs, AEs, Fs and Es (the main ones I use) with cord winders, and without!

The E is particularly tricky to fit with a cord winder since the machine-end cord is hard-wired inside. I have seen two solutions to this over the years that clever Electrolux repairmen came up with. One was to connect a short lead of cord into the machine, just a couple of inches, with the male end sticking out. (Electro-Hygiene did this same thing.) Then when you attach the cord winder, you just connect the female plug to the short lead. I have also seen Es with cord winders where the lead from the cord winder was hard-wired inside. That's neater-looking in appearance, but of course means the cord winder can't be removed.

I also found an E in a thrift shop with the short plug coming out of the machine with a later gray Electrolux cord on it. It had a halo, so I wonder if the people asked it to be made that way so the cord could be removed and used as an extension cord and then it got lost so they had to get a new one, or if it originally had a cord winder that went bad and they took it in and had it fitted with a halo and got the new cord then.

Wheeeeeeeeeee go the wheels of obsession!!!
