So I purchased a miele capricorn S5981 off of e-bay and absolutly adore it. I am well aware of the problems that come with owning an older miele vacuum with the power controls on the handle grips. I have to admit I was scared of purchasing an older vacuum not knowing anything about repairing them. I trust the vacuum repair men about as far as I can throw them. I am not close to any of them in my community. i have a miele home care S8 and can completely see how much better the quality was in the older vacuums. I also have a brand new bag less air hoover which I despise. I bought it new for over $200 last year and it broke within 3 mths. I will never purchase another bagless again. Thats when i decided to pay more money for a higher quality vacuum. I have been thinking about purchasing a miele blue moon since reading about how great they are. But are they really? I am not interested in anything else besides a miele. Not a kirby or electrolux. I also checked out a new riccar but thought the quality was not as good as the miele. Can anyone that has a blue moon or a capricorn tell me if they still love their vacuum today? Have you had lots of problems with them? I was so thankful for sleepdocs comments from my last thread. Sleepdoc are you happy with your blue moon? Is there anyone on this forum selling theirs before I purchase one?

I do have the silver moon which is similar to the blue moon, only smaller. It has the same airflow as the new single stage vortex motors. It is also heavier than the new models. There are three things I dislike about it, the cost of replacement parts, the hose length, and the handle. It has occasionally turned off on me at random. I am not looking to part with it as it is my sole Miele canister.

I bought a Capricorn new but only had it a couple of years as I was not pleased with it. For me the hose and power cord were too short, the hose was unwieldy and the above the floor cleaning tools were too small. Also I found the wheels to be too small which made moving the cannister around on the carpeting difficult to do. I did start to have problems with the fluorescent light on the powerhead - sometimes it would work and sometimes not. I understand that Miele changed it to LED in a later version of the Capricorn. Also I started to have problems with the controls on the hose handle - sometimes they would work and sometimes not.

I had a Blue Moon and loved it.. The only reason I parted with it was due to it's size.. I had moved into a smaller house and the big canister was banging around into everything. Wound up putting a central vac into that house.

I do know what you're saying about the quality of the newer vacs. This is my personal preference, of course, but I tried out some of the newer models and I can't figure out why they moved to a fixed hose connection at the canister. Maybe they had reliability issues with the old design, I'm not sure.. But when I tried the newer models, I definitely preferred the old version. I just felt like I was always fighting the hose.. Especially having been accustomed to the 360 swivel of the old hose connection.

I started out with a Flamenco, then an Aluminum, and finally the Blue Moon. Thought they were all great.
