I've been planning

Since before the last convention ended! I'm sure it'll be a blast, maybe meet a few new people!

...but St. Louis is too far for me! I'd love to meet other like-minded Kirby enthusiasts, especially. Anyone know of a convention closer to California??? The idea of a vacuum convention blows my mind! (Pun sorta intended)

I regret that, for personal reason, I shall not be attending the convention. I will however, be in town at that time and I very much DO hope to see my visiting friends. Please let me know if and when you expect to be free and available to come for a visit and see my collection.

It's such a shame that you won't be there. You are always so much fun. It's always great seeing you and going to events with you. Perhaps things will change. Joe, Greg, Kevin and I always get there on Wed afternoon. That way, we are rested and not rushed when the convention begins on Thursday afternoon.

Several are going there.

It is not an official part of the VCCC convention, you know that. It happens to be an attraction about an hour away from where we will be. It is a totally separate attraction. People, I believe, are planning to visit that before our convention begins Thurs afternoon. Enjoy.

Thank you for clarifying that John. Heaven forbid that people make the trek all the way to St. Louis, and not know they can come to the Vacuum Cleaner Museum. It's open all year long. Certainly it would be the "holy grail" for any real vacuum collector. That's one of the reasons it exists. To be a resource for vacuum collectors of ALL brands. Looking forward to meeting people I've never met before.

Also, anyone can purchase a Tacony product at the Factory Outlet Store for much less than suggested retail, and get Free Shipping.

The Tacony vacuum museum is a "must" see for anyone that appreciates and collects vacuums of all brands and types. The factory outlet store is fantastic as well.
You can try them out before you buy,, at a substantial savings, plus free shipping. I have been there several times and looking forward to my next visit this spring.

Your Museum is amazing I am still working on showing up with a few friends that week just to see the most famous vacuum cleaner museum .

It's going to be an interesting visit I am sure as you are a vacuum genius plus it's connected to the wonderful vacuum manufacturer Tacony vacuums made right here in the good ole USA .

I am in LOVE with all my Tacony vacuums I have purchased from you and can't wait to purchase more of the exciting new models . Everyone will be able to purchase awesome vacuums at equally awesome prices .

The museum is outstanding. Seems like there were some other attractions on the way, like a really big rocking chair.

I was most impressed by the old Airway upright vacuums. My only disappointment was that Tom didn't have his signature Airway canister on display at the time of my visit. But with so many vacuums, he can't display all at once.

The Tom Gasko Air-Way Signature Series model will be on display, along with the entire Air-Way vacuum collection.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Anyone who has visited has left with a smile on their face - it's really a 'one of a kind' experience.

Where else could you use a 1909 Hoover, followed by a 1966 Electrolux Hospital model G?

I'm sorry you're upset by that. I'm not stirring any pots in here. It is a fact that the museum/factory is not an officcial event. That's all I said.

That would kind of be like going to Rome and not seeing the Vatican. Who has a vacuum cleaner collectors convention and doesn't plan on going to the Vacuum Cleaner Museum as part of the trip?

The factory is amazing. We should be making the cordless 8 pound Simplicity and Riccar ultra light uprights by then. They are so cool. They run almost an hour and of course are Full Sized, Full Powered cleaners. The freedom of not having a cord is awesome.

The new Wonder and Prima canisters will be on display - I'm going to love showing you all where every one of their features came from. The Museum was used extensively in its design.

Plus it will give everyone a chance to see the Maytag cleaners IN PERSON. It's a sight to see every model Simplicity, Riccar, Fuller Brush, and Maytag model in one place at the same time. Factory Outlet Store pricing and free shipping if anyone wants anything.

Also, for anyone interested, you can go through the Duplicates section in the Mezzanine section above the factory floor. Find a treasure and make me an offer. I have over three hundred machines up there. Plus the tremendous amount of obsolete bags and repair parts for all brands, makes, and models. Need a hose? I probably have it. Need an obsolete brush roller? I probably have it.

2 great events--same week--same region

Any here that would be able to get to the convention and not see the museum/factory might find it like:Ham with out Eggs--Salt wo Pepper--Bogey wo Bacall--Astaire wo Rogers--Sears wo Roebuck--Rolls wo Royce--Funk wo Wagnals--Robbins wo Myers--Rexair wo Water--the Hoover wo the Dusting Tools--Thunder wo Lightning--AM wo FM--well you get the idea.
I would hope ALL could enjoy BOTH.

WOW! There is more 'advertising' here than on NBC.

I will be arriving Wednesday as well. People to see, things to do, places to go, since St Louis is also my Alma Mater! I will be back in time for the beginning of the Convention, however.

I'll help you get it all sorted out Alex. There's a yellow Eureka canister, a Power Drive Hoover, and a Rainbow carton that would look good in the Museum. We could get Bob, Donnie, Myself, Evan, Jimmy and Derreck together at your house for lunch one Saturday soon - and help get the garage presentable for your luncheon.

I’m also thinking about parting with a 1070, and Electrolux Discovery II. I might have some more as convention time approaches. Please email me if you are going to the convention and are interested in these vacs. My email is in my profile. I'll let these go to club members for very little $$$.

I'll also be bringing at least four vacs to sell or give away for free. Hope they will find new homes!

I'm not attending the VCCC conference, but I will toss out some free advice about visiting St. Louis. Locals - please correct me if my info is outdated.

One of the nice things about St. Louis is the light rail system. You can pick up the train at the airport (I mention the airport because apparently the conference hotel provides free transportation to/from airport.) It's easy to take the train to the Arch, Cardinals baseball games, Union Station and casino downtown. You can also take the train/bus to the excellent zoo (free for general admission). St. Louis has a beautiful Cathedral (cathedralstl.org/...).

If you happen to buy pizza in St. Louis, be aware that they use a funky creamy cheese called Provel (provalone+velveeta??). Ted Drews custard is worth a stop if you have the chance.

I've made arrangements for a good friend to check on my kitties....  clothes are washed.... suitcase is ready........ camera is ready........ arrangements for ride to airport (only 3 miles away from me), etc.....

Just think:  VERY soon,  many of us will all be together soon.

Sadly,  Joe Kassock will not be traveling with me this year.  He's having some surgery..  I'm sure he'll be ok.  But,  keep him in your prayers/thoughts.

He recently got 2 phone messages,  inquiring about his operation.  He was most surprised at this.  He called me... "John,  I have to talk to you.  I just got 2 strange phone messages.

But,  I'm sure he'll be at my next mini meet.  Good thoughts to you, Joe.

I MAY be taking him home from the hospital (only 6 miles from me)

  "Get well SOON".

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning at the Vacuum Cleaner Museum. The tour of the Factory will be awesome, people always love to see how a vacuum cleaner is made. Many new additions to the Museum have been added in the past week or so - I'm very grateful for all my friends who have contributed machines for the displays.

And I might even stop by at Alex's house while you all are there. Will be great to see the entire club again.

Early bird convention arrivals.....

Some locals and 20 early birds arrived yesterday, and at least double that arriving tomorrow! The fun has begun! I saw some flashes going off at dinner last night, hopefully someone will post some pics. We went to Dave and Buster's, all at one table, really good food, drink and laughs! Phillip and I packed the 4Runner to the gills, forgot how many layers. There will be some for show/play, and for sale. Phillips Volvo is of course packed to the max as usual. That kid knows how to pack vacuums, thank God he does!

Really going to miss........

..... the convention this year.

Just not financially feasible for us this year.  The airfare for two was a killer.

Will miss everyone. Wishing you all a terrific time.

P.S.  Here's where the convention money went this year:

JUST got home!!

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

We had a WONDERFUL time! Many arrived Wed.  Thursday, some of us visited the great Ruth Hollander... hours of stories,  vac parts, etc.  Then,  we got ready for the convention to officially begin.  Vacuums (a LOT this year) were humming. We formally opened the convention with Chad's opening remarks.  There were 45 total this year.. a significant croud.

The FABULOUS Fox Theatre,  John Pease's home and outstanding collection,  Lunch at Alex Braun's... (neat house and collection, as well),  great thrifting.... vac shop visits,  a great banquet...... on and on.

Everyone hates late Sat p.m. and Sun a.m. as that's when it's all over.

Lots of pics soon.  I'll post mine as well.

 John.

The convention was great! The fox theater was very entertaining! Thanks to Alex for letting the club into his house and purchase vacuums that he had for sale! I purchased two Hoover Sprit canisters and enjoyed cleaning them up yesterday! Meeting Ruth Hollander was a real treat! I enjoyed hearing stories of her selling compacts and filter queens door to door. She is a dear sweet woman!

Is there a reason to why members are allowed up to 13 vacuums to bring? 13? Is this considered an unlucky number?

Post# 326646 , Reply# 73   6/9/2015 at 12:57 (3,214 days old) by KC_Kirby (Kansas City, MO)

The reason is a collector brought a bunch of vacuums that were junk and left them in the hotel back in 2006. The hotel charged the club a hefty disposal fee. This happened before I joined but that is the reason given. After every convention I see people leave behind vacuums and parts. If no one takes them we throw them in the trash.

Forgot To Mention The Real Number Is 12 Vacuums Not 13. Why they chose that number I do not know.

a group of us visited the great Ruth Hollander.  "You've made my day",  she said.  "No, Ruth,  you've made ours".

Michael Turner opening a never opened, never used Filterqueen. He would later take this home with him.  She was in no hurry for us to leave.  The feeling was mutual.

Visit to the VACUUM CLEANER MUSEUM

dysonman1's profile picture
I got a chance to visit with a large portion of the VCCC membership on Thursday morning. They went through the Factory to see how an American-Built vacuum is made from the ground up. They got to meet the AMERICAN work force behind Tacony's outstanding products. I had fun with everyone. Most folks came away with treasures from the Vacuum Museum's overflow section. Several of the purchased machines won blue ribbons at your cleaning contest. Everyone was very nice, and we had a GREAT lunch at Country Bob's Diner in St. James, Missouri. It was so good to be able to put a name to a face. Special Thanks to Will Helm and Sean Curry for the amazing Kenmore Horizon power nozzle. It's the only one I ever saw, and now it makes the Museum's Kenmore Horizon complete. You guys are the BEST.

The Vacuum Museum

Was awesome! Seeing all those machines restored and on display was a real treat. The people at the Tacony factory were very gracious to us. They let us take all sorts of pictures during the factory tour, something I never would have expected. Tom's museum overflow was amazing. All sorts if vacuums old and new waiting to be rescued. I bought a 1930's Kenmore Deluxe Automatic and an Electrolux XXX from him.

I'm briefly coming out of self-imposed exile just to say I'm pretty disappointed that more photos and stories from the VCCC convention haven't been posted.

After all past meetings there have been veritable floods of photos and postings, but this time relatively few photos and just some briefly dashed-off notes have been posted.

Were there sweep-off competitions? Awards for Most-Original, Best Restoration, Best-in-Show, etc. etc.?? Did folks come home with finds-of-a-lifetime??? Were there the usual scandalous behind-the-scenes shenanigans????

I was looking forward to vicariously enjoying the fun and camaraderie since work obligations and financial considerations always prevent me from attending. It's always a great pleasure to read about the goings-on.

There were 2 conventions. The VCCC had their convention, and folks who were here early were allowed to come to the Museum. I got to see many 'long time' members (Tania, Ken, Dwayne, David Watters, Clay Floyd, etc.). The Vacuum Collectors Group had our convention just a few days ago. I enjoyed meeting all the new folks from the VCCC, as I haven't been to a convention of the VCCC since 2006. Can't speak about any 'shenanigans' (although there are ALWAYS 'shenanigans', especially when alcohol is involved) as I was not privy to them. From my end, it was an awesome experience - to share the world's only Vacuum Cleaner Museum with all the 'new faces'. One of my proudest moments was being able to share a very rare Dyson DC02 with Scott M. His mother, Barb, is one of the sweetest people I've met.

There was no 'Monster vac" competition this time. I don't have the list of "most" or "best".....restored, etc.
THere were many one stroke contests. I was asked..(summoned the the competiton floor)... to run a Hoover Slimline and a Hoover Guardsman upright..which won! I now have 2 blue ribbons.

As far as shenannighans....hmmm IF there were any, they were very discrete about it. As far as alcohol is concerned, I've never tasted any of it, so, ....
No one seemed 'out of control' or was doing anything that could get them in trouble with security, the police, etc. No one was asked to leave, thank goodness.

It was wonderful, indeed, to see so many familiar faces and a few new ones as well. Alsways a pleasure to see Miss Tania, the "First Lady" of vacuums. We heard about Scott's graduation and plans for college very soon. Good luck, Scott. Rick B. was there from California, after a few years of absence, ALWAYS great to see him, too. I'll post a few more pics as well. 45 attendees, including the great Ruth Hollander.
One must never confuse a convention with a mini meet, or even a mega meet.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

You worked so hard on that convention.  It did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Some people look forward to the convention every year.   Some couldn't make it,  which was unfortunate.

Some would like to attend,  others have no interest. If a member doesn't want to,  they simply don't go. Luke, Bill, ans afew others  were there again,  always nice to see them and I also enjoyed the late night chat w/ Luke's dad, etc.  They joined The VCCC, paid the dues,  attended the convention, participated in all of the various activities, stayed in the very nice hotel, and enjoyed the dinner/banquet and, hopefully, made new friends.

Greg, Kevin, and Joe usually make it.  Hopefully, next year,  they will all attend.  It's always great fun.  Even in school,  I never was part of a clique, the "in crowd", etc.  I like to be drama free. I usually do that by keeping away from the drama, nasty comments,  some are lies, anyway.  .. so who really cares?

I'm very glad to be a part of the VCCC. I'm happy to serve the club as a board member. Morgan, the late Terry, Michael, Chad, Rick B, the great Ken Wagman,  and others have been trememdous assets to the club.  They've been great examples.  I hope to do as well as they have.

I hope the stories, photos, etc  will bring smiles to faces and possibly get other dues paying members to attend.  I've heard of a few guys who are now officcially join so they, too can join in the fun.

I know of a few surprises for next year's convention already. But, it would be wrong to divulge them  just yet.

True,  convention are a lot of work.  They cost a fee... not huge,  but, members who've been to them  attest that it was well worth it.

We've seen them in the past. I'm not sure they were captured on video this time.
I'm anxious to see what Wil Hemb has (photos, that it). One MUST be careful.Back here at home giving final exams at the college, I'd much rather be back in St. Louis.
I know pics were taken at "Dave and Buster's", as well as at that ice cream place we were told was excellent. There certainly seems to be a steady crowd there. A bus group was leaving while we were there .

Hopefully, next year, I'll be driving to the convention and will bring some machines with me.
Today is the anniversary of my serious surgery, years ago. I thought about that ,realizing I'm very lucky to be here.
On the 23rd, our own Joe Kassock is having surgery also. I trust all will be ok. Joe has been through a lot in recent years. Please keep him in your thoughts/prayers, especially next week.

So, more convention pics? I'll post a few more of mine later tonight. I know tons were taken. Since I'm not on Facebook (I only get mailed copies of the nasty comments made about me), I can't see any of the convention pics there.

Keep them coming.

We were also in some vac shops

one is called "the mansion"... YIKES!!!!! I was able to get a few HOOVER items:a model 69 handle grip, some vinyl outer bag jackets, (mustard yellow AND white .. GENUINE Hoover) a type A bag apparatus, manuals, etc.

Then, we stopped at a WILD mid-century thrift shop. I mean W I L D !!!!!!!
If you were in the market for vintage decor, appliances, and the like, that is your place. One looks at it all and just wonders what kinds of houses they came out of.

This is a really rare Filter Queen that was made for Western Union. It came in a black box, I think it was somewhat of a commercial type model? I don't know a whole lot about it but I did see one Ebay recently. This one was at Ruth Hollander's vac shop. This was the first one I've ever seen in person.

You made such a scene about attending the convention, I just was certain you had gone. It's unfortunate that situations always seem to arise that prevent you from doing other things. Better luck next year!

Not bothering, asking a legitimate question after you "hired a private jet" and everything else.

I'm guessing It was the wedding of his private chef kristov! It must have been held at his LOVELY ocean front condo and they must have went off on that SO CALLED private jet on a honey moon to let's say Rome. Sadly we all can't love our fantasy lives like he does. Must be nice! Oh and when you decide to ACTUALLY leave New Jersey and travel to another state please let us know. :)

Regarding the one pass cleaning contests, is that one forward and one reverse, or just one forward? Does the user technique make much difference in the results? That is, does a veteran contestant have an advantage over a newbie? I'm assuming technique may be more important with the straight suction contests.

Post# 327831 , Reply# 145   6/23/2015 at 16:40 (3,200 days old) by gottahaveahoove (Pittston, Pennsylvania, 18640)
Well, one wants 'good technique'

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

However,  the one stroke is one stroke up, and one stroke back.  It is also timed,  so as to NOT go too fast.

While technique is essential,  the vacuum's performance speaks for itself.  Brush condition,  clean bag,  proper ryg height adjustment, etc all are factors.

Perhaps you might do this at your next meet.

Hello John,

Thanks for the info. Always interested in knowing how fair tests are conducted.

Speaking of which, I'm still annoyed at Consumer Reports for not specifying whether the "optional" power nozzle was used when they ran their tests on the Rainbow E-series, but that's another story.

To be fair, the competition is done by categories.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
For instance, there is a "heat" for commercial vacs, straight suction, upright w/ beater bar, etc. The same amount of kapoc, rice, salt is applied to each lane. We (VCCC) used to use a rug provided by KIRBY... we don't do that anymore. The strokes are timed and judged by a panel of judges, not just one member. THey are great fun.

Sometimes, we have "Monster vac" contests, too. "Wee Davey" and B Rad (Bee rad) brought FANTASTIC creations back in Portland. We had a convention in Portland, home of
dave
olsen.
we all enjoyed that famous trip to Stark's Vacuum Store and vacuum museum.
I just wanted to be clear about the competition, so no one has any doubt of it's fairness.
Some already know all about this. Others.... now you do, too.

Unconventional me

Yes, afraid so. Looks like great fun, but I'm not much for travelling alone, and hubby isn't interested. Also has a very stressfull job with much responsibility, as I also used to. Now I run the house.
When we are able to get away we either cruise, or rent a place somewhere warmer for a week.
In summer we go north to the family cottage, but I've been wanting to visit Falling Water, the former Kaufman home by Frank Loyyd Wright.

Experimantal design?

For vacuums? It's all been done before, like most else. If you want better innovation, bring back some good old fashioned QUALITAT.
Wow, after I read post #140, it seems I also acquired an attitude.
Guten Nacht!
