Yesterday, in a moment of temporary insanity, I bought a Kirby G5 on eBay. The price was pretty low and it had free shipping, so I hit the "Buy it Now" button. Besides, I've always liked the G5's burgundy color scheme.

According to the description, the only thing wrong with it aside from a few 'battle scars' was the plug, which had been torn off the end of the cord and re-attached with black electrical tape at a right angle to the rest of the cord. It's probably as unsafe as it is ugly, so I stopped off at Lowe's on the way home today and bought a $2 plug to replace that bit of redneck engineering. I don't know why people don't take a minimal bit of effort and expense to fix a thing correctly, especially when the roll of tape probably cost within a few pennies of what the plug did.

Buying the thing was completely insane because I needed it like I need another hole in my head. I already own two perfectly good Kirbys, a Heritage I and a G6, in addition to an Electrolux 1205. I mean, how many vacuum cleaners does one really need to clean a 1,300 square-foot-house? In a worst-case scenario, I guess I'll have a parts donor for the G6.The machine will arrive sometime next week and then I'll know if I got a bargain or a boondoggle. Either way, it's mine.

So the seller of this machine generated a shipping label for it right after I bought it, but UPS tracking shows it's never been sent out. I contacted the guy today and instead of explaining why it hadn't been shipped or letting me know when it would be shipped, he said he'd discovered that the gray plastic that holds the brush roll in place was broken. He included a photo and it looks like the bearings seized up and the friction melted the plastic. After a couple of e-mails back and forth, he agreed to knock enough off the already low price to pretty much cover the cost of a new brush roll. Gotta give the guy credit for honesty on disclosing previously unnoticed damage, but he also loses a few points for not answering the initial question directly. The next question is whether he'll actually follow through on what we agreed to. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

The seller was true to his word. The partial refund has been issued and the the vacuum is now in transit.
