I know I've been uncomplimentary about Kirby on here in the past due to what I consider to be cons. It's very heavy ( not in use but carrying upstairs etc) bulky, noisy etc. But I am now thinking of buying a used Sentria on Ebay not to use as a daily driver but as a deep cleaner every week or 2. I think it would be good for that purpose.

I've seen them go for around £200 so I may place a bid. :-)

Nice!

Sounds like a good idea, hope you like it. Hearing all the raving that goes in about Kirby's, they must be good. I would also like a Sentria personally, it looks like such a cool multifunctional machine! 😃😃😃

They are good. But as Marcus said, they're also bulky, heavy and noisey. I'd also like to add expensive and impractical to that list.

Contratry to what seems to be popular belief on these parts, no one vacuum will suit every individual and forming an opinion based on hearsay is NEVER a wise thing to do. Just because someone says something is good, doesn't automatically make something good for you. I mean, Argos Value bagless vacuums and cheap Vax uprights get 5 star reviews from the general public online, yet we all know they're poop.

Kirby's are great cleaners, but they're not as straight forward as just plug in and go straight out of the box, hence the need for in-home demo's and DVD manual's.

I'd always recommend trying before you buy. It's a big adjustment to go from using an out of the box vacuum to using a Kirby if you've never had one before.

I think even the die hard Kirby fans would agree that it's important to "test drive" any new purchase (not just a Kirby and not just a vacuum) before commiting yourself to it.

This is true Chris. Kirbys are not for everyone but I might give it another try. It won't be my main cleaner: but it's a nice cleaner to have in a collection and as a deep cleaner every week or 2 it might work for me, i will only be using it on carpet i won't be using all the attachments. I have got some ear plugs at the ready:-)

A Kirby is not good for everyone

Some people are too weak to carry the heavy machine, of course, they put wheels on them so they will roll so this makes it much easier.

Though Kirbys are not that much heavier than other machines on the market this seems to be what the detractors zero in on when they don't have anything else negative to say.

A Hoover Wind Tunnel self-propelled weighs in at around 18lbs. A Dyson at around 18 lbs, a Rainbow at around 26 lbs, a Lux with power nozzle at around 25 lbs, a Simplicity Synergy at around 20 lbs. But those extra two or three pounds that a Kirby weighs is more than some can handle.

Noise is relative, but I do perceive the G series Kirbys to be a higher pitched noise than some of the older Generations. However, the previously mentioned Hoover is sometime perceived to be much louder, as with the Synergy. Now if you want a silent machine I would suggest you go with a central vac or maybe a Lux Guardian Platinum.

For cleaning abilities the previously mentioned machines are all good at what they do. If you want an upright with good cleaning ability, less weight and lower noise levels try a Sanitaire blue line with disposable bag.

*Mentioned weights are from memory so if I am off, I have no doubt someone will correct me, but you get the point.

Why Sentria? I thought YOU are the one that recommends Ultimate G Diamond, as the "best Kirby" to everyone!?

Post# 315866 , Reply# 7   2/18/2015 at 07:33 (3,326 days old) by marcusprit ()

I think my Felix is about 14lbs so that's quite a bit lighter and a lot quieter.

And that's a good idea putting wheels on a Kirby, those Americans aren't stupid are they! :) But you can't wheel them up the stairs. I'm not weak i have bulging biceps :p

But as i say i'm going to give it another go.

Yes i like the Diamond that was the last Kirby i owned but some say there was a problem with the hi/low switch? So this time i thought i'd give the Sentria a go. There's plenty to choose from on Ebay

That ain't hard, none of those singers are any good. Except Beyonce, she's got a killer voice but she's not a particularly good song writer.

That's debatable. Rap existed LONG before anyone had heard of Eminem and he's not even responsible from bringing rap into the mainstream - it was popular before he came along. And rapping isn't singing.

It's not only that, the height adjustment and tech drive have to be set in a certain way, the removal and reattachment of the nozzle to convert to hose and back to upright has to be done in certain order, not to mention converting from dry vacuuming to shampooing. They're certainly a faff.

The upside to this is that Kirby really are sublime for carpet cleaning and you can convert the cleaner into a proper cylinder, but for quick pick ups and spot vacuuming, they're probably not very well suited. A good deep clean machine though and because they come with a million attachments, you can clean pretty much any surface with them.

Even turning the machine on, Kirby recommend following a very specifc process:

 - turn the machine on

 - retract the handle

 - lower the height until the motor pitch changes

 - lower it one more click
 - engage the tech drive

Then to turn off:

 - raise the height to the heightest setting
 - turn the tech drive off

 - turn the machine off

Bear in mind, when switching between carpets, you'll have to raise the height adjustment and lower it again for each different carpet. Even going from a carpet to a rug and back again.

If you're used to Dyson, which are very much "plug in and go" machines, the Kirby can take some getting used to. I know the above process takes literally seconds, but to go from just flicking the on switch to that is quite an adjustment to get used to since you'll instinctly want to just switch it on and go.

Yeh, that was one thing my mother always hated about our Kirby.

It's a good system if you're really wanting to blitz. My mother in law uses her Ultimate G when she's doing a big clean up. She vacuums all the carpets and then gets all the dusting tools out and vacuums absolutely everything in sight. She even vacuums her textured wallpaper in her hallway. She'll do this maybe once a month/every 2 months. But for day to day vacuuming, she uses another machine as a quick pick up vacuum.

Post# 315893 , Reply# 27   2/18/2015 at 08:11 (3,326 days old) by marcusprit ()

Yes it's not as straight forward as more modern designs but the process you just mentioned is very simple and after you've used the machine for a while it becomes second nature so that doesn't bother me.

The weight, bulkiness and noise is more of a problem, but i'll only be using it every week or 2 so i might be able to live with it. It does give great results on carpet but i shall let you know my feelings after using it again for a few months.

There's a few around us. A friend of my partners have 2 - a Heritage and a Legend 2 - both family hand-me-downs.

There were a fair few whilst I as growing up too. We had a Legend 2 and I had 3 sets of aunts and uncles with them, one with a Tradition, one with a Classic Omega and one with a G4.

Ah cool.
When I was a kid, approx 12 years ago let's say. There was like 25% of a Dyson owners. The most popular vacuum back in the day was the bright orange Vax 6131. Now I have not seen one since my neighbour replaced theirs with a. Henry. Then a few days later a DC33.

God, when I was that age, Dyson barely existed. It was all Hoover Juniors, Turbopower 1 & 2's, Electrolux 500's, Twin Turbos, Contours & a few Gliders, Hitachi Powerhouse uprights and Panasonic 40 & 50 series. There were a fair few Vax 121's and 2000's knocking about too.

Cool. What is your area like now? Most houses here have Dysons. Like 60% are Dyson, then there is approx 20% Henry's and the rest are cheapo vacs. People here love Dyson

I was born in 1998. From 1997- 2000 ish, we had a Dyson DC01. Was used loads is our carpeted house, especially be me. I broke it. Before the DC01 we had a Vax 121, dunno what before then.

turbo500's profile picture

I'm younger than you, thank you, you cheeky old woman! :P

Our street consisted of pretty much all uprights, bar 2 that I knew of. These were all either Hoover, Panasonic, Hitachi or Electrolux. Dyson's didn't really start cropping up until about 1997/98.

I don't live in the same town I grew up in anymore, but there are indeed a fair few Dysons on our street. Varied models too from 04's right up to 41's, with an 08 and 33 thrown in for good measure. There's at least 2 Henry's and a Hetty too.

Our immediate neighbours both have Vax's.

Neither of my parents have ever owned Dysons. Even when I was very young and I saw my aunt's DA001 for the first time and was begging my folks to get one, they never did. We had a Hoover Turbopower U2332, then a Panasonic MC-E44, then the Kirby Legend 2. We kept the Panasonic upstairs whilst we had the Kirby - Mum prefered it and it got far more use than the Kirby ever did. We had that in daily use pretty much from 1992 - 2007ish. I still own that cleaner, actually.

Our street is so long it takes like 3/4 mins to walk on one end of the road to the other! About 140 houses I think. Terraced houses too.
My neighbour has a Dc33
Their neighbour has a blue dc19 allergy
Their neighbour is my uncle. He has/had a dc04 absolute and he currently has a 2013 3d face Henry with park feature and Autosave
Hie neighbour is also my other uncle, he has a black swivel sweeper, white dc14 all floors and a white DC15 Allergy
Then that's the block, my other neighbour has a Hilo Henry
His neighbour has the same, but with push switch
Their neighbour, un known, but a few doors away is my mums friend. She has a dc25 all floors
Then their neighbour has a DC20 Animal stowaway
Then their neighbour has a DC19 T2
Then their neighbour has a Henry
Then their neighbour has a DC40
That's the block done.

Across the road, there's
Our relative, she has a dc07 origin and two DC01's. A Vax handheld, purple bagged cylinder, bissell carpet sweeper, Vax rapide oldie tub vac and another carpet sweeper
An old lady who had a DC04, she had to move out to live with her family on the next road. Lets call that road 2. She was ill so needed care. Their family also had a dc04 silver lime.
Her neighbour two doors away has a Hetty. Used to have a DC02. At the end of the road, our family friend, has a DC03 Absolute which they absolute HATE. They said it breaks all the time
Their neighbour has a DC33 Animal
Their neighbour is my dads mate, he has an Eco Henry
Their neighbour has an Eco Henry too and is also my dads mate. He has a few Henry's cos he owns a car business
Then I dunno, but random houses are;
Bissell powerforce
Vax little tub thing
Blue hoover purepower
Dyson wheeled upright. The I were chucking away the box for their new motor
Vax orange tub vac 6131 I think
Morphy Richards cylinder
Push switch Henry

My side of the road;
My mums friend has a DC14 with clutch. Dunno what colour, but saw her using the wand from it. The later one with the red wand end and it didn't have the non clutched vibrating sound.
Their neighbour two doors away has a DC27
Then many doors later, a DC33
Then their neighbour has a DC07 standard
Then further down the road is SURPRISINGLY AN ELECTROLUX CONTOUR

Ok, the road two now. My Aunty used to live there, so I know what the neighbours have etc etc etc
Neighbour has a Vax bagless cylinder. Her other neighbour is my dads mate and had had a dc04 silver limes cleaner head broke from an accident so it went into the garden. I didn't want it but they have a Vax upright mach range thing. I heard the brushbar grooming pretty well from next door even with the door shut

Their neighbour two doors away is my mums friend. She has a DC27
Their neighbour a few doors away has a DC14 Animal
Then other side... DC05 purple and green absolute cleaning the car
Their neighbour has some bagless Electrolux upright
Their neighbour has a DC04 lime. Its the one where the old lady fell ill and she had a DC04. It's still in her old house actually, but the new owners dragged out a DC33 and put it in their car?!
Across the road of road two;
Dc04 brush control in yellow
Black Vax 6151
Erm.. OMG. I JUST FORGOT 😭 but my bought a new house in 2012. She has a Henry now to replace her old Vax cylinder which lasted 4 years.

On road 3, the one like right behind me there's my uncle. He has a DC19 . He alsok owns the house next door and that has a DC19 too.
His neighbour has a Vax bagless upright.
Their neighbour has a DC04 in yellow. Actually my uncle bought that house last year and they have a DC25
Their neighbour has a DC03 Standard
Then right behind my house, my Dads mate has a Marion Vax little tub thing. Like a mini 6131
His neighbour has a Vax swift, a green DC04 and a Henry. Their neighbour two doors away has a blue DC07
Then my mums house over here. She has a Vax mach upright. Sounds like a a Dyson
Their neighbour has a blue DC04i and a Vax upright bagless Mach range too

I could go on and on forever, LOL but there's so many vacuums in so many roads.

Chris how's your neighbours dc14?

turbo500's profile picture

I don't know, I don't live there anymore. I moved last April.

Ok, this is going back like 20 years now, so bear with me. At one point I knew what vacuum was in every house. Our street when I was growing up looked something like this:

Hoover Turbopower Junior U1222
Panasonic MC-E44 (this was us!)
Hoover Junior 1346 (brown)
Hoover Turbopower U2602
Hitachi Powerhouse CV460D
Hoover Turbopower Boost U2716
Panasonic MC-E53
Electrolux z2030
Hoover Turbopower Junior U1220
Hitachi CV760D
Electrolux z1070 Turbo2

Then the house around the cul-de-sac at the top of the road went:

Hoover Turbomaster U5096
Goblin Rio Reflex
Electrolux Contour z1460
Hoover Turbolite
Hoover Aquamaster

Back down the other side:

Hoover Turbopower 2 basic
Electrolux Twin Turbo z561
Hoover Turbopower U2194
Hoover Junior 1346A (blue)
Electrolux 560
Hoover Turbopower U2602
Panasonic MC-E41
Vax 2000
Hoover Junior (I don't remember much about this one. I think it was a recon)
Goblin Laser
Panasonic MC-E41

I start to lose track at this point. This is where there was a bend in the road and there was a gap in the houses, so I never really went that way much.

A lot of these were replaced whilst I was still living there and people moved too. There was a wave of Hoover Turbopower 2's for a while, then Dyson and other bagless vacs started coming in.

The first Dyson was, I think, next door to us. The lady with the Hoover U1222 died and when her house was sold, the family that moved in had a DC01 Antarctica Solo. Then the house over the road from us that had the Z561 got a DC04 Silver Lime. I forget after that.

Where we lived was a 1950's estate. A lot of families who had kids that I was at school with, so I could start naming vacuums from random houses 5 streets away, but I think that's taking it too far :P.

You live/lived in Otley I think it was? There's a chance your neighbour sold her DC14 several months ago in Otley. Same model, lol. It never stood up so. I messaged her on how to fix it. She replied to me with something like this;
"man, I love you and want to have your babies. Just tried it and it worked perfectly. Will you marry me?!" 😂😂😂

No, I lived in Baildon (not far from Otley). I now live in Utley, which sounds a bit like Otley and isn't far away, but it isn't Otley :P

I still frequent Baildon as my folks are there.

My neighbour's DC14 was constantly breaking, but she wasn't half rough with it. She'll have to do something with it though, it had bad bearings this time last year so god knows what it sounds like now.

"Ee bah gum" is an expression, not a place, and nobody has said it in 300 million years. My grandad used to say it ALL the time. Along with the word "hark".

I do like it up there. It's a beautiful county :-) South Yorkshire is a bit more industrialised ( there's a big word) But the Dales n Moors and York are lush.

Isn't it just? I love the fact that 10 minutes walk away from our house and you're in open country side and upto the Yorkshire dales, but then 25 minutes in the other direction (easilly accessible by train and bus) is Leeds (where I work) and Bradford. It's like the perfect balance between country and city living, having both a short distance away.

Equally, Wales has some gorgeous countryside and Cardiff is a lovely city! I just cannot get to grips with those North Wales roads - "No motorways? Windie country roads all the way? Get real, did we lose a war!?"

South Yorkshire has some bloody weird places in it!

Leave our street, up to the main road, cross over, 5 minutes walk and this is where you find yourself

I've only been to Birmingham a few times. I remember the Christmas market was on and the city was PACKED. Definitely a live wire of a place to be and a fun place to visit. Not sure I'd want to live there though.

Also, Birmigham New Street station is actually hell on earth.

Lol, new street station is not bad
I also stayed in Rochdale, Lancashire for a few Days with our cousins/family there and it was quite nice, however the houses are so small. Nice and peaceful tho with all the farms around the small city :)

I'm sure there are small houses in Birmingham too :P.

But yes, Rochdale was a popular mill town during the industrial revolution, so a lot of housing is small terraced houses built for mill workers. It's the same in Bradford and parts of Leeds.

It's like that where we are - all towns and villages. Until you hit Leeds.

And Harrogate that's a bit posh for you isn't it Chris? :-)

How very bloody rude indeed!
Harrogate isn't that posh, just folk from Harrogate like to think it is. It's a nice place to visit though - lots of nice bars and restaurtants.

Ahh, Back on Track.

When you need to do a thorough deep clean, there'as nothing like a Kirby. Those by-pass air bagless cleaners just can't hack it.

When you own a Kirby and use it regularly those extra steps needed to start cleaning become second nature and you don't even think about it anymore. For instance: Once you find the proper height adjustment for your Living Room, there's no need to go through the adjustment sequence each time you use your Kirby. You remember the height setting number for each carpet. So if your Living Room carpet setting is #3, then you just set it at 3 and forget it. There's no need to go through the sequence each time you vacuum.

It always irks me when all the Kirby haters out there start yapping about how difficult it is to use a Kirby. They're blowing it all out of proportion and making a mountain out of a mole hill. It all becomes second nature after a few uses. If you want your carpet to be REALLY CLEAN, then what's the problem with performing a couple extra steps to get it done right?

Back to vacuums...

I've never found my Kirby G6 particularly difficult to use. It took me all of maybe two minutes to understand its features. Having rescued it from a dumpster, I didn't have the luxury of a manual or DVD to explain any of it to me; it's just that straightforward and intuitive. The height adjustment is actually easier to work than any other upright I've ever used, save for my Kirby Heritage, which works exactly the same way. It's designed to be operated on the fly and does it brilliantly.

Yes, the thing is heavy, but I have a one-story house, so there are no stairs to lug it up and down. It's also a bit of overkill, considering there are only two carpeted rooms in the whole house. But as a deep cleaning machine, it's a beast and a half, yet the Tech Drive lets it move like a machine that weighs half as much. It's a well-engineered machine, arguably the Hummer of upright vacuum cleaners.

Although I did eventually acquire a set of attachments for it, I never use them. For those applications, I prefer my 1969 vintage Electrolux 1205 or my recently acquired mid-'80s vintage Royal hand vac. In the end, it's all about using the right tool for the job.

Of course different folks have different ideas about what the right tool is. My girlfriend's sister used to clean my house and she never wanted to use the Kirby. She preferred to bring her $45 plastivac from home. It got the place clean and it worked for her. So be it. I prefer the machines I have and wouldn't want one of those disposable ones. Using built-to-last metal vacuum cleaners arguably helps the environment. I lived in an apartment complex for 10 years and I saw how many plastivacs went to the landfill from there each month. Multiply that by a whole city, and it's really frightening, especially considering and all that plastic is a non-renewable resource.

A little more back on topic good luck on the hunt for a Sentria Marcus.
