I've been enjoying my new Sanitaire S675 for the last couple of weeks. I've had one question that I've been unsure about since I brought the vacuum home. How should I set the 6-position height knob?

I'm used to setting my Kirby vacuums by lowering the nozzle until the sound changes, then one click further. Is this a good way to set my S675?

Most of my house has 16-year-old neglected carpet in poor condition. The unworn places indicate that the carpet was medium cut pile carpet, and was low quality carpet when first installed. Using the Kirby approach for setting my Sanitaire puts the knob on setting 3 of 6. The sound changes at setting 4, and one more click puts it down at 3. It looks like the nozzle is sealing to the carpet at 4, the brushroll is certainly contacting the carpet, and running my fingers along the nozzle indicates that the vacuum is sealing to the carpet as well. It almost appears as though the carpet may be pulled up just ever so slightly when on setting 4.

I've been using the vacuum at level 4. The vacuum is easy to push, picks up surface dirt nicely, and the brushroll brings up the worn nap of my carpet nicely. Any stray debris such as grass from the yard or tiny pieces of paper are easily sucked into the nozzle.

If I drop it one further click to position 3 of 6, the vacuum is still relatively easy to push and brings up the worn nap even more nicely. On position 3, surface debris such as grass from the yard or tiny pieces of paper are sometimes pushed around instead of being sucked into the nozzle. The brushroll doesn't seem to bog down on either setting.

Does anyone have a suggestion on which setting is probably better for the worn carpet?

I should add that I have one room with relatively new carpet medium cut pile carpet. Setting 4 works best on that carpet. It's the worn out carpet in the rest of the house that I'm unsure about how to best set the height. I hope to replace the worn out carpet in the next year or so, but have to pay off some medical bills first.

Thanks for your expertise!
Brian

Thanks for the Confirmation

Dan,

I appreciate your quick response. You confirm what I thought to be the case. I guess I don't need to drop it one more click like on my Kirby vacuums. Perhaps it is because the Kibry seems to have more height clicks, with one Kirby click dropping the height a smaller amount than one Sanitaire click.

I'm quite impressed by the Sanitaire's performance and build quality. My worn out carpet looks much nicer after using the Sanitaire than it does after using either my Kirby G4 or my Classic III. It makes me want to start looking for a nice vintage Dial-A-Nap Eureka vacuum.

When I had a Dial-a-Nap Eureka, I always started at a higher setting when using a new empty dustbag which resulted in very high suction. Later on, as the suction reduced, I would lower the nozzle height to maintain good deep cleaning.

Your Sanitaire probably has a very powerful 7amp motor, so I'd keep the nozzle at a height where you hear the low vibration of the brush at the same time as allowing good air flow with no "suction lock" on the carpet. It will save you from constantly installing new belts, and it will allow the cleaner to do a better job of edge cleaning. Too low a setting will hurt cleaning effectiveness, not help it. As long as you hear the brushroll vibrating the carpet, you are down low enough.

Thanks, Eurekaprince

Thanks for the advice, Eurekaprince. I'll plan to keep it on the higher setting 4. My vacuum does have the 7 amp motor. I do have some extra belts, though the first belt still seems to be working well. It also uses ST bags instead of the F&G bags. I'm hoping the synthetic ST bags will keep strong suction for a little longer than using F&G bags. I hope it's similar to the difference between using paper bags in a Kirby or using poly bags.

Those sanitares are beast. I keep mine on 4 to. If I lower it to 3, I can literally pull my carpet off the tack strips, not to mention its a bear to push.
