Well after being in Florida for about a year and a half last Friday I finally found my first vintage machine. It is an Electrolux 1205 and it was in very nice shape. As most of the members down here will probably tell you we usually do find to many vintage machines. I found this beauty at a Lutheran Church Rummage Sale. It was sort of pushed under a table. It was in the orginal box but that was in really nasty shape with one end completely gone. I just finished detailing the machine and it turned out great. I don't believe this machine ever saw much use!

A beautiful machine, and complete, too! And since you found it at a church rummage sale, I'll bet you got a good deal on it, too. Congrats!

Beautiful Find Terry...

Congratulations on such a remarkable find Terry. She's gorgeous! I don't know what it looked like when you found it, but it looks near MINT to me.

BTW, I got your message and owe you a phone call.

Now that's a nice looking vacuum and the color I really like. Seeing that just make the new stuff look even junkier

1205

Very Nice! Is the paint finish on the 1205 smooth or does it have texture? It looks like it is smooth meaning that it is an early model 1205 because Lux didn't switch over to the textured look and feel until later in the 1205 run.

You can also tell it's an earlier model because the PN-1 Power Nozzle "neck" has the push button release on the front where as the later models did not have this.

An Electrolux salesman told me once that the 1205 was one of Lux's best selling machines ever (besides the XXX) only because they had made similar looking vacuums for so many years (E, R, S, G, L, F) that when they introduced this "style" they sold millions. (Because it was something NEW that people had never seen from Lux before!)

Congrats on a great find! Enjoy it!

I'm still looking for the blue one like yours. Oops, I saw one three weeks ago, but the hose had a really bad kink, and I left it alone! It was the first blue one I had seen in years around here. I do love yours.

Wow Beautiful 1205

Great find,I have one that I got in '90,I wasn't collecting then so it was my everyday vacuum,It has the same powernozzle,I like them because they have the metel base and just seem to do a better job,you can put some pressure on them, the newer ones just don't seem to groom the carpet as well, everybody's house that I cleaned with it was always amazed, then one day I came home with an Olympia and retired the 1205,now the Olympia is well worn too, both deserve a restoration, after the G,my favorite these days. Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Yes Logan, the finish is smooth. I did get a fantasic deal on this machine, $7.00 complete. I have discovered that the Church sales are alway the best at least around here. My mom had this machine but a later model which she got in 1974. The only thing wrong with this machine that I could find was that the bristles on the floor tool on one side and those on the dusting brush are almost completely gone and lots of them fell out. Anyone else ever see this. Lucky for me that a good friend has a set of replacement brushes for me. Terry

Beautiful 1205 Terry!!

My Aunt Ruth has one, she got it new in 1973 and is still using it today.
I also think the 1205 was quite spiffy looking in the blue.
Much better looking than the Golden and Super J's!

How is the hose? Does it leak? You can still get beautiful new hoses for those machines (wire reinforced, not saran.) Can't wait to see it in less than two weeks!

How many different colors did that model come in, or was that one strictly blue?

The 1205 only came in a gorgeous blue!

Post# 31062 , Reply# 18   2/6/2008 at 18:49 (5,895 days old) by logan ()

Well technically the 1205 only came in blue, but the anniversary model that came out after the 1205 (Golden Jubilee) was still a 1205, but in Gold. The Jubilee had the same motor, etc. The only real difference between the two was the handle design. The Jubilee I have still has 1205 stamped on the inside of the bag lid as the model.

Post# 31063 , Reply# 19   2/6/2008 at 18:56 (5,895 days old) by logan ()

On second thought, the Jubilee was actually the 1205-J. Same motor, etc. just in Gold. Most people hate the Gold, but I love the 70's feel it gives. :-)

This would be interesting if the first J was a 1205. I had the Super J and thought that the J's were different than the 1205. Here is a link to the history.

I actually like the gold, can't say I prefer it, my favorite color is blue. Too bad also that the black one was a limited edition prize for the dealers. I think I got that right.

Terry...

You have a great find there. It is in a very loving home too. That has to be my favorite Lux. I love the quiet power of these machines. Yours looks to be complete. Were there any other options for the Lux buyer back in the early '70s? I can't believe that you even got the box for that price. CONGRATS!

Now I am a Hoover guy through and through, but I have to admit thanks to Vibra-Beat I have a beautiful 1205 too. I use it for my hard surfaces and just as a general cleaner. However, I have a Hoover hose attached to it so that I can use my Hoover tools (go figure??). This is my favorite canister to use, and I am not a canister guy by any means. So the fact that my 1205 does not irritate the ever living #### out of me is a testimate to this machine!

Thanks for posting the photos Terry!

Terry aka Concetta,

Great find! And, lovely condition. I think you remember the one I had that now resides with Morgan from when you were here last year.

As all have mentioned, the 1205, as a "true" 1205, (1968-1972), was a wonderful Electrolux and they sold a lot of them. It was the first body style change after Consolidated Foods, (Sarah Lee Company), bought the company. The former model being the turquoise/tan model G series.

It was a huge change in that the bag cage had been oval shaped before and now was rectangular. Also, the bag cage went from being all metal to plastic.

I find it amazing that the number of these vacuums still being used by their first owners or by a member of the family of the first owners. Many of them still have the original PN-1's through PN-5's with the original brush roll's and belt's! A true testimony to the quality of Lux at the time.

Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing it shortly. Great find and a good addition to your collection.

Charlie

Lux History Chart

Hey Fred,

As many will tell you, the Lux history chart has a few errors on it. For example, the Model R was not made all the way up to 1966 and they don't even mention the White Model L on there. (That's just me being way to OCD with the chart)

Anyways, The Golden Jubilee and Super J are similar, but actually different.

The Golden Jubilee is basically a 1205, but in Gold. (Hence the 1205-J model tag.) It has the smaller motor like the 1205. Still a good motor, just smaller.

When Lux switched over to the Super J, they started using the larger more powerful motor just like that in the Olympia and Silverado. If you compare the suction of a Super J to a Golden Jubilee or 1205 you can totally see the difference. Plus the Super J was a bit longer in length than the Golden Jubilee.

One more thing...

I just wanted to say I hope I don't come off sounding like I think I know everything about Lux because I definately don't. :-)

The only reason I know this stuff about the 1205, Golden J and Super J is because the owner of the vacuum shop I used to work for in High School sold Electrolux during that time and he has all sorts of literature and stuff that he shared with me that he kept when he quit working for them.

Lux has some very interesting history...

That's what this forum is about. It is always great to learn new facts. I didn't realize the numbering worked that way. I had a brand new Super J which, as you say, was considerably different than the 1205. I don't know if I have ever seen a Golden J. The Super J was one of my favorites. Loved that gold hose with the blue tracer. What a cleaner!

Golden Jubilee

My aunt in WV has a Golden Jubilee that she bought brand new in 1974 that she still uses. I can't even remember how many times I have asked her to trade me that vacuum for something different HAHA because I want one that is all original. She has taken such good care of the hose that it still works like it did when it was new. Anyways, she will not part with that vacuum for anything! I don't blame her, but hey it never hurts to ask. LOL

HI Everyone:

Yes the Golden J was a 1205-J with a facelift. The later Super J was the first model 1401. You'll notice that the hose on the Golden J was white with blue and gold tracers. This was because it was used with both the gold golden J and the blue L.

Re: the Aeris timelines. The US one isnt bad but it is off in a few places, where as the Canadian one is WAY out to lunch. Alot of the dates are nowhere near correct. I wrote them about this once but got no response. It seems they just dont care. I've also been contacted by people before that have been giver erronious information by them about old machines too. When they took over most of the old staff quit or were fired (at the same time they got rid of all the old records) so there is really no one there that has any idea of the companys history.

Wonderful Lux Find

Terry,

Great Find!! And looks to be in spectacular shape!!!
I have very fond memories of that particular model. It was one of the first luxs I'd used in a very long time when I discovered it at the home of a high school friend. I remember being at that house "back in the day" (when her parents were gone) and vacuuming all the rooms on the first floor. (We had GREAT parties at that house, and of course, I lead the cleanup effort - the Master Vacuumer) It was a good size English Tutor with great burgandy, very short nap, tight weave carpet that was sooo much fun to vacuum. The PN-1 nozzle worked great with that carpet. Overall, the machine was so easy to maneuver, and very quite - it allowed me to go into my world. Can't wait to see it in person and do a memory run!!
Thanks for posting and see you soon!!

Pat

Terry that's a great find. Those 1205's are such a satisfying canister to vacuum with. The "Automatic Control" script on the front is so elegant. It always reminded me of the Cadillac my Mom had when I was a kid.

Golden Jubilee - Model 1205-J

Fred, you said you weren't sure if you've ever seen a Golden Jubilee 50th Anniversary model. Let me show you mine. Take a real close look and you can see some subtle differences between the Super J and this model. (The handle assembly is slighty different on the read end and it is about 1 inch shorter than the Super J)

Side by Side Comparison

Jubilee on the left, Super J on the right. This will give you a better idea...Hope this helps some.

Logan,
Thank you for showing us the difference between the 1205 and the SJ. For us Canadians, we have rather limited access to these machines, other than purchasing through ebay.
