Nice...

Hi Mike
Was that on Ebay? that slipped under the radar over here if it was.
It dates to November 1977...

Hi Seamus,

Nope, you're absolutely right. Ignore me, I completely miss-read it!

Should've gone to SpecSavers...

Seamus,

These were all on ebay at the same time from the same seller. Including the one you got recently. I've never seen so many connies on ebay at one time before and most of them in really good condition. Especially this one. Glad to see this one has gone to a good home.

You're right Hoovermatic it was! the guy was selling about 15 of them. He emailed me and said theres quite a few 427's being listed soon so keep yr eyes peeled if yr interested. anyway received connie and was delighted. I've always had earlier model connies to this one which seemed more robust in construction. This later model purrs and is smooth running but is notably louder than earlier models (well at least here anyway).

The hose and cord appear shorter than earlier models.

In the latter stages of production, were hoover trying to cut costs to compete? can anyone shed light on that one?

Mike

Mike, Does it have the Sponge filter fitted to the exhaust outlet? I've got an 867A with this fitted and it does make a difference to the sound.

There is no sponge filter attached to the exhaust. I!ve never seen or knew one existed. Do you have a photo of one you could share?

The sponge filter sits in a cage inside the cleaner. You'd only know it was there by taking the cover off the motor, but a cleaner of that style and age would almost certainly have had one.

By 1977 Hoover had an enormous number of cleaners in their UK portfolio - both upright and cylinder- most of which were made in UK, but some -like the Celebrity and Celebrity air-ride- came from other countries. Many models of Hoover did more or less the same as another. Thus, it is not at all surprising to see how the later Constellations had shorter, double-stretch hoses instead of the longer triple-stretch, because as well as saving on production costs, it also gave the whole cleaner more definition in it's own sales line up. That is to say if you wanted a cleaner with more refinement than the Constellation now offered, you'd be drawn towards a model from the Freedom range.

Why Hoover felt the need to offer so much choice, I am really not sure. Electrolux -who were one of Hoovers biggest competitors- never offered the consumer anywhere near as many options; their 1977 range boasted three uprights and four cylinders, each one being designed and marketed in such a way that the consumer could easily see the differences bewteen them and decide accordingly which one had the right features for their needs. So, by the time this Constellation was on sale, it was just another cleaner in a wide range of cleaners, and possibly only still in production because there was some novelty value in its shape.

Having said that, it's worth me saying that this colour of Constellation went on well into the 1980's, with the last models having a rocker switch and beige & brown plastic tool kit. This colour was one which ran for the longest out of all the colours it came in, and yet for me I have seen so few of them.

Many thanks vintage repairer, that explains when you look through the exhaust port you can see what looks like a plastic motor cover, something I have never seen before. The instructions also make note of triple filtered air. So it's safe to say it does have an exhaust filter.

I am stoked to have one in new condition. We have 4 golden retrievers and deep green carpet so I was keen to see how a 600 watt motor and the flip over floor tool performed and I have to say for picking up dog hair it did a very respectful job, which proves you don't need a 2400 watt machine.

I'm sure it won't be long till they multiply further. Once your junior collection is complete you can then start on the Seniors,Connies etc... Hope you have plenty of storage....wink

James they have multipled since i took the photo in 2012!!!! Added 3 Hoover Junior 119s (one with the red letters on the fan cover) and another hop green Hoover Junior with a metal hood as the one in the photo has the plastic hood .My latest aquisition is a Hoover Junior 1224 as i already had the blue dusting toolset for one so couldnt leave that one out ! Needs quite a bit of work on this one as must have been stored in a damp place and the damage that this can do to these vintage machines
