Well I have given in and decided to try a new Dyson after seeing a 2015 DC40 for £185. I would have prefered the animal version, but it was not on offer and as far as I can tell, the only difference is the lack of the mini turbine head.

First impressions are good. Far quieter than any other Dyson I have owned, comfortable to use, good performance even on my kitchen floor that the DC24 and 25 couldn't cope with.

It is very early days, but this may be a Dyson I keep beyond a few months.

Unboxing video to follow in a couple of weeks followed by a full review.

The first picture shows the muck removed from a small section of my living room carpet which includes a lot of fine dust and grit particles.

Aside from potential build quality and leaking issues that have plagued Dyson since day 1, I have to say, the newer machines are really improving the performance. That new brushroll and cleaner head really do make the world of difference. The crappy brushroll's always were the biggest let down on Dyson cleaners, so it's certainly nice to see it FINALLY being addressed.

I'd easilly go for a DC40 or a 41 or Cinnetic. I like the size of the 40. It's not too big but not as small and pathetic as the 24 or the 50.

Excellent I'm really pleased to hear it. I found the ball a bit stiff at first but it loosened up after a week or 2.

Hope you enjoy it Roger. :-)

My ball seems loose enough. The hose is stiff though.

Roger, did you notice James Dyson holding one of HIS balls, on the box? Very smug looking as usual.

Regarding the "ball" mine seemed a bit stiff at first but it loosed up after a few days of rolling about.

I really do like the DC40, looking at yours Roger, it makes me wish mine was shiny new again. A "fresh" one, although, despite that icing sugar test I did with mine, it still very clean (after cleaning it of course.

I make some comment about James in the unboxing video. I think I referred to him as Mr Smug.

I do have a few (several dozen) light hearted digs at Mr D during the unboxing, but after using the DC40 throughout my house, I must say, I think the rift may be healed.

Here's my first bin load which doesn't include the master bedroom and ensuite as I can hardly see any carpet in there at the moment.

That's impressive! I told you they've come a long way. What I like about it is it moves so easily across the floor no effort needed and the new lip thing on the floorhead, you can lift it up and collect larger particles. That's a good touch.

After emptying

There doesn't seem to be an excessive amount of dust inside, but I only used it for regular cleaning, no very fine dust or icing sugar.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but it's pretty clean in there.

Nice! You got it!
I may get my DC41 Mk2 in August. I found the DC25 hose to be a little short and even the size of the DC25to be small in my home even though a bigger machine like a DC07 is nicer.

Dyson have always been good. The brush bars only let them down.

That's wat I found and I've been using mine for 4 months. The cyclones work well. You will notice the filter stays clean for a long period of time.

Dyson's have not always been good Tayyab, They have been LOUD and not picked up very well.

The newest Dyson's are the best yet. But, they are flimsy and very expensive.

That said, I do love my DC40.

The one thing I wish they would fix if they want to better their product in the future, is make the DAM cyclone bins scratch resistant!! They make the whole machine look dingy when the pin is sand blasted, I sped up the scratching with my bin from picking up granulated sugar, the first week I had it for that agitation test, oops. They do go dull over time though.

Post# 314612 , Reply# 16   2/5/2015 at 09:15 (3,357 days old) by marcusprit ()

I agree about the bin should be scratch resistant and yes they are over priced! As for the plastic it may feel flimsy but it is still robust. A riot shield is flexible for a reason. To absorb the impact. It is the flexibility that makes it strong.

I agree they are durable but I want it to FEEL durable when I use it, I don't like how it flexes when you steer it, to be honest, that could also be due to the handles design rather than the plastic itself.

I wonder if Dyson would send me a new bin if I asked them nicely, lol, it would make mine look new again.

Love your vids, btw. Sold me on the Air Cordless! Looking forward to seeing how the new DC40 performs in your tests.

Post# 314616 , Reply# 20   2/5/2015 at 09:42 (3,357 days old) by Sensotronic (Englandshire)

I have only used the tools briefly on my stairs and cleaning a blind with the soft dusting brush that I still had from when I owned a Dyson before. The hose is just a bit short to reach comfortably to the top of the stairs, even with the wand attached and I found cleaning my blind a bit tiring as the hose feels heavy when using it for dusting. Saying that, I tend to use a suction cleaner for above the floor, so I may look at a Dyson cylinder next.

Glad you like my vids. I try my best.

Post# 314617 , Reply# 21   2/5/2015 at 09:46 (3,357 days old) by parwaz786 ( )

Dyson have always been good, not excellent but good. The DC01 was okay for their first vacuum and the 03 better features wise. Then the DC07 improved the DC04, etc etc
I would say the loud a Dysons are the DC08, DC03, YDK DC01, DC07 late models and the DC33.
My DC14 Animal is alright noise level wise, some reason.

The DC01, DC02 and DC03 are DREADFUL they have hardly any suction at all at the cleaner head and the hose suction is poor for a clean fan.

I don't care if the DC01 was his first it is still awful, it don't have enough suction even a contour had more at the time, all he had to do was use a more powerful motor and it may of been okay.

The DC02 was just a pathetic excuse for a cylinder.

The DC03 was a nice design but again, it lacked in power, if it had of been as powerful as the DC04 it would of been half decent.

The hose on the DC41 will reach up the stairs. It is a bit springy but it does loosen up in time.
Anyway £185 you got a very good deal there Roger. I paid £320 for my DC41.:-0

turbo500's profile picture

Agreed.

The success of those cleaners was only as a result of clever marketing and not a high performing product. Dyson cleverly fooled people into thinking the machine picked up more because you could see the dirt being spun around in a cyclone, but it didn't. Every single cleaner on the market at the time would've out-performed those 3. Even a £60 Goblin Laser has stronger suction at the cleaner head and a better brushroll.

The DC04 and DC05 however, were a VAST improvement and to this day are my favourite Dysons of the lot.

Marcus, so I pay an extra £45 than Roger did for the turbobrush?

Chris, I think the DC04 was one of the better Dyson's, you try and find a DC04 or DC05 with a clogged cyclone, lol.

They had very good suction but again, they tended to whine down the ears.

Great! So I can clean under my FRIDGE where nobody ever goes, but still can't vacuum under my BED where the cat goes.

I'm sure Alex said something earlier about solving problems that don't actuall exist. Very appropriate.

Well you can clean with the low profile tool admittedly you have to use the wand. I would like to see it be able to go under beds etc on future models. That's something Dyson should look at

That certainly seems like the next logical design step, Marcus - make the ball smaller to give the machine a lower profile. It would be difficult though, as the motor is in the ball, so Dyson would end up with something not disimilar to Hoover's "the globe", and we'd end up with another lawsuit.

Certainly a possibility if Dyson can get it to generate the same performance as a normal motor.

I don't care what anyone says, the digital slim DOES NOT have the same performance as a mains powerered upright.

No it's doesn't. I'm not keen on it to be honest I'd rather the Vax. And the Miele looks good but it's not available here. Think they may come out with a new cordless.

For what it is, I don't mind the digital slim. Great for quick picks ups and clean ups inbetween doing a thorough vacuum. But Dyson are trying to market it as a replacement for a full sized vacuum and unfortunately, people are falling for it. Again.

i've had mine for quite a while now and is use everyday and honestly it's absolutely fantastic.gets used more than then my vacuum.if a standard person had the cordless they would only have to vacuum to go once a week.

It's very noisy the battery only lasts about 6 mins on the Max setting its hugely expensive and doesn't have a HEPA filter but it does clean well for a cordless.
The Vax cordless is a decent machine and with offers you can pick one up at a good price.
I'd like to try the Miele stick VAC it looks good. But I have a feeling they will be bringing out a cordless soon.PS. I know the miele isn't cordless but maybe they will bring a cordless out along those lines. I hope so.

Chris, the DC04 is alright, not better than a DC14 in my opinion though. The DC14 has a better design overall, it is stronger, more powerful, parts are easier to find and replace on the DC14 than the 04, the pre filter has a larger surface area, the ducting is wider, etc.

Unless your DC04 is a very late Malaysian model (like the one we got new which was one of the last to be made before they got discontinuned in 2005 as they are pretty strong :)

I figured I should just comment in this thread instead of making a new one. What appears to a black gasket fell out from the wand of my DC40. I don't know where it came from. does anyone know whe're it came from? My phone won't let me upload a photo of it. I'll try with my iPad.

It doesn't really look like it

but I finally finished rebuilding my DC41 today. Came from an environment overflowing with pets. I was able to get the smell of carpet fresh out of it by washing the pre-filter with cold water and detergent (just using water wasn't enough to get the smell out), and I took a risk and ran the cyclone pack and bin through my dishwasher (I just let them thoroughly dry and they came out spotless and sanitized).

The old brush bar's bearings were dried out, and the new one arrived today. Really did a great job! I was able to free up one of the (tiny!) siezed ball wheels, and now it rolls around very smooth too. It's a fun vacuum to waltz around the house, and I love the insta-hose for getting into places the cleaner head cannot.

I realized that I may have also had the soleplate on incorrectly. The three tabs in the front had to audibly 'click' into place, and now it's much easier to push, and is cleaning great!

Here it is with the previous-gen TOL model, the AirMuscle, and part of the DC59.

Dyson Digital Slim

I've been using my Dyson DC35 that I was given free by Dyson for the past 3 weeks and have put my DC24 into storage until I move house.

I will keep using the DC35 as my main vacuum cleaner until the end of the month. I've been able to vacuum the hallway, bathroom, kitchen, living room and a tiny bit of my bedroom before the battery cuts out, I then charge it for 3 hours and then vacuum my bedroom. I vacuum my bed due to allergies and the carpet. That's me done. I get this all done after work. It's been fine. I ditched a mains powered vacuum cleaner for now. I know the DC35 isn't doing a 'through' clean, but it's great at extracting dust and debris from the floor.

Dyson customer care is always first class with them providing spare parts under warranty.

My friend purchased a Sebo Felix Eco the other day. I used it and was amazed at how powerful it was for 700 watts. Comparable to the 1300 watt. The swivel design was easy to handle and most of all, I absolutely love how it goes flat to the floor to vacuum under the bed or coffee table. don't like the X4 machine.

Dyson Cinetic feels so much better than a DC40/41/50 with less flexing. But that Big Ball!! Gosh it's way tooo big. I can't vac under the coffee table with that beast!!

Hi Sebo_Fan,

The fan is a very good Dyson copy. I purchased it in 2013, at Carrefour in Dubai.

It has a remote control with timer function, swivelling operation. Ahead of when Dyson added that feature on their fans. This model is based on the previous design so its rather noisy when on full blast but it only cost me £30 equivalent British Sterling. I wouldn't spend over £50 on a fan, so I feel that I was very lucky to spot this fan.

They are still being sold in Dubai when I went last year :)

I really am loving my DC 40. It is certainly the best Dyson I have used and it makes me want to try some of the other new Dyson models. I may get a cylinder next because I'm not keen on using an upright for above floor cleaning and I like some of the Dyson tools, especially the soft dusting brush.

I still don't like the man, but I am starting to like the vacuums with his name on. Dysons do not feel like quality machines, but at least the performance has improved greatly and the noise levels have reduced to acceptable levels.

I have been using it on max, but going forward I will probably use it on normal as it is easier to push and the normal setting works best on my hard floors. The only thing it will not clean is my wool rug in the living room. With the brush on, the cut out operates and stops the brush bar and with it off it is extremely hard to push due to the sealed suction of the head.

I find it impossible to move on hard floors when set on max, I tend to use the normal setting all the time, I only use the max settting for cleaning my berber front door mat.

The unboxing video of my DC40 will be on my Youtube channel tomorrow, followed by the full review two weeks later.

I have just registered the guarantee with Dyson, so this one's a keeper. In fact, it is just the first of quite a few Dysons I want to try, starting with one of the cordless models which will be arriving tomorrow.

It was only after I made the video and let the DC40 loose on my bag of filth, that I saw how really good this cleaner picks up. I was a bit scathing and cynical in the unboxing video, but turned into a gushing, suck up by the end of the demo. I still don't care for the man, but the vacuum cleaners that bear his name are certainly better than they were and I am looking forward to trying out more Dysons in the future.

I will look forward to it Roger. I agree with you it does pick up well and is so easy to manoeuvre. It's a pleasure to use. :-)

I wish people would actually try these latest cleaners before they bash them, they may be pleasantly surprised!

Soon after writing my latest post, this arrived!

It wasn't due until tomorrow so it was a bit of a surprise. I know it's the base model, but it gives me an excuse to upgrade later on. Now where's my camcorder, I feel an unboxing video coming on.

I have never been in love with a vacuum cleaner, I am not a pervert!

I have lusted after a few in my time, but that's another story.

It is more of a figure of speech Roger, I am sure you know that ;) I should say I have grown attached to it, which isn't far off as I have used it ever day since I have had it. They are very good to have around.

Roger, I think you will really like that dc35. It's not their most powerful cordless anymore but they are great to use. We have a dc44 at the vac shop I work for, and although it started as a floor model, it quickly became the main machine used to clean the store. About two years later and its still going strong.
