A friend of mine contacted me saying she cleaned out her storage unti and has a Kirby for me. I'm picking it up tomorrow morning! I have no idea what model or what shape it's in, but will post pictures when I get it home.

Lucky you!

While some may prefer one model over another there are no bad Kirbys! There are damned few that can't be restored to good working order and a good working Kirby is a great vacuum . . . make sure you post some pix for us :)

Yes!  Just the kind of stuff I love to work on!  With a little TLC, the Kirby will come right back to life!

That's nice. Free Kirby is always good. Couple of new wheels, through cleaning, polishing should go easy (no big dents/scratches),.....I think you scored.

The Diamond Edition was even better since it had two more speeds that worked in conjunction with those on the speed switch. It took the form of a green LED illuminated switch mounted by the handle fork. However, that seemed a bane to some users due to its confusion with the BPI (brush roll performance indicator) light on the rug nozzle.

The lower speed, known as the Delicate mode, was only intended to be used on lighter carpets and throw rugs, just like opening the air adjusting plate on the 516 to Tradition models. It is not recommended to use this speed with the hose attached since it could overheat the motor.

Nice job of restoring the hood! I agree that you will be able to bring the cleaner back to its original condition.

Would you post a close-up of the nameplate? I'm wondering what its model and ratings are.

As you probably know already--Kirby began naming its cleaners along with its custom of assigning model designations to them in 1969 with the debut of the Kirby Classic III/Model 1-CR. I wonder, then, if the G6s--which were made from 1999 - 2002 (excluding the LE 2000 and LE 2001) were tweaked and given different model designations like the Aerus/Electrolux ones--or if both the name and model designation were changed when updates occurred.

That cleaner saw a good time, indeed. Isn't it a shame that it was treated (mistreated) in such a way?
But, I'm sure you'll get it up and going. And, I'm not a big "Kirbylover".....by any means, but I appreciate what you're doing there, bigtime!

I've seen a lot worst, most of that will clean up without and problem. It's good it's an Ultimate G instead of the Diamond, you don't have to worry about the circuit board.

I don't know who thought up 4 speeds, I see a LOT of burned out circuit boards. The switch next to the handle goes to a circuit board under the motor and from there to one of the carbon brushes of the motor. Funny thing after the Diamond Edition you don't see that switch on the Sentria, Humm, wonder why?

You're doing a good job of cleaning it up. If the bag is dirty you can throw the bag with the emptor in the washer to get it clean. Just don't throw it in the dryer afterward though.

My Oh My!!!

Sean, your Ultimate G turned out fantastic! Not many people would attempt to save a machine in that shape anymore. Just think, you not only gave that Kirby many more years of useful life, you also saved waste from the landfill and reduced emissions for all of us. Not to mention the dollars you saved can be spent here in America. So I would say our "weird" little vacuum collecting/restoration hobby is a great big win-win situation for all concerned. If only more people would lose the buy-break-buy again mentality and save for a quality item, care for that item, live with and repair that item, maybe we could stop this plastic rush of destruction to the dump-ground! Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now, strap on my pumps and continue vacuuming.

Kudos Sean, You do excellent work. Enjoy your Kirby and Vacuum on! Russ

Nice job on that one! Looked pretty awful before, but then again many of the free vacuums we get are free because people seem to think its beyond saving, but with some time and effort you can get something really nice out of it.

That machine came out really nice, sounds great too.

For Admin-
Not to be too OCD or anything but now that we know the vintage of the machine shouldn't this thread be moved? Is the entire G Series even 20 years old yet? Or am i confussed again, that happens sometimes..

Wet sanding starting with 150 grit sandpaper, then moving to 220, then 400, then 600, then 800, then 1000, then 2000. After that then a long polish with 000 steel wool and Mothers mag and aluminum polish.

The admin(s) move/delete threads

but no doubt haven't noticed yet. It's a minor point anyway.

Edit: I just noticed that when you post a link one of last options (new vac, vintage vac, or ebay etc.) is to suggest such an edit to the admins.

The early G4 would be 20 years old since the G4 ran from 1993 - 1997. Mine has the 80th Anniversary logo (80 + 1914 = 1994) so it is 20 years old as of last year.
