That would be a super expensive bag to obtain. Most of the originals were damaged during the years, and the model 65 is the "holy grail" of a lot of Hoover collectors. Good luck finding one, hope the price doesn't break the bank. I'm sure a good model 65 outer bag, on eBay, would go for over $100.

I'd rather not speculate on what the 'going rate' is but would rather say that someone could list your Hoover bag at a much lower and fair price on eBay or another online auction site. Indeed, not every seller is so greedy as to put an outlandish price on a vintage item that is more functional than it is decorative or valuable (its rarity notwithstanding).

A famous painting, an authentically-signed baseball, or even a White House vacuum cleaner have definite value--but any old vacuum cleaner bag? Let's be sensible. To make a claim that any Model 65 outer bag is worth over $100 is ridiculous. Correspondingly, many Model 65 bags in fair to good condition have been discarded over the years, because their values were deemed low by their owners--and justifiably so (have you ever discarded something old that had no use or value to you but may possibly have been valued by someone else?). Anyway, I don't think we do each other any favors by posting what we think an item's 'going rate' is or should be on this site as it gives sellers an unfair advantage. Furthermore, as many on this site have mentioned, a vintage item's monetary value is what someone is willing to pay for it.

I hope you will be able to find a bag at an equitable price--in fact it is quite possible. If someone doesn't come through for you on Vacuumland consider checking with your local vacuum cleaner stores (trade-ins), garage sales, flea markets, et cetera.

Ronni, you clearly do not know how EXPENSIVE genuine outer hoover bags go for. the common ones SELL for $50-80 on ebay average price, even when starting cheap. genuine convertible bags for specific models are VERY hard to find by themselves unless you raid a vacuum shop or estate auction of a vacuum shop. ive hauled this stuff away myself from places like that. a genuine intact 65 bag will go for over $150 by itself. same with similar era kirby bags. ive been tracking these price trends for four years.

youd have better luck finding an intact machine for much less at an estate sale, but genuine outer bags for convertibles are one of the most expensive retail items that sell on ebay or even in trade. dont be so quick to snap at someone when you havent tracked price trends of what things things have SOLD for, not what ebay seller ASK for them.

i sold a genuine 65 bag to a good collector friend from my amarillo haul for $25. i personally wouldnt charge those prices for my finds to sell, but lets be VERY clear here, ebay prices and what you find thru other venues are VERY different things. most collectors dont want to go thru the effort of digging thru estate auctions or vacuum shop piles to find these things. they go to ebay. i rarely buy stuff like that from ebay, maybe entire intact machines on rare occasion, but rare parts i wait to pilfer thru vac shop back rooms.

Will,

It seems that you MISSED my points. I was not focusing on the reality of inflated prices but rather the possibility of reasonable prices. I also pointed out that the Model 65 original bag's extrinsic value is not fixed but variable--that is true for vintage items that do not have significant value in history and culture. If someone wants to pay a hefty price for a common item that has intrinsic value to him or her that is his or her choice. However, to suggest that the extrinsic value of a vintage item is completely dependent on one group's (collectors) intrinsic value is erroneous.

My point can be illustrated in that Just the other day I was in several antique stores and noticed a wide range of pricing on identical items among different sellers--all in PA. As a result it is typically advisable to take one's time and shop around at different stores (visible and virtual) for the best price as necessity dictates.

Vacuumland is a forum that allows for alternative perspectives to be shared and taken into consideration. When room is left for only one perspective information and participation are hindered or altogether stifled.

I simply offer another perspective.

thank you all

thank you everyone for your insight on the bag I might have found one for around $25 I hope but I know they are higher by some dealers than others. I would sell the machine before I put over $50 dallors in it.it isnt worth it to me right now if it was mint condition i might.

they are cheap and work just as well. Sheet, just buy a Dirt Devil/ Bissell /Eureka off Craigslist for even less.
But if you want to enhance the value of your vintage machine for some reason, an act some might call "greedy" i guess because it doesn't comport with intrinsic value...well to add that greater market value you are likely going to pay a greater market price on the bag. Because the seller is trying to enhance something too. Issues of scarcity and competitive bidders come into play. My first memory of a vac is a Hoover 65 and i would like one just like it..even that one had the bag replaced back in the late 70's as i recall ,
This price/worth discussion happens a lot here on vacuumland.
As far i can tell, having used vacuums beyond what you need (perhaps outside of commercial vacs), is not an intrinsic value proposition from the get go as there is no liquid market to sell them into for a profit past the cost of storage and shipping. There is luck, and the ephemeral collector market which seems to work pretty well for some.
Shoot, if a farmer can't get his crop to market it's plowed under. Intrinsic value seems a slippery cat i need to study up on.
