Hi all
Just bought a Hoover 429 and can't wait for it to arrive from Australia. I think it's very late in the run about 1972 - 1973 by the ribbed cable and plug. It's described in lovely condition and can't wait for this little baby to arrive. There's a few pics and one of the rating plate so maybe someone can work out the date of manufacture from that and let me know! cheers mike |

That is a lovely example of one of these cleaners and the last of this line of Hoover cleaners. Please post some more pictures when it arrives. I think here in the UK the ribbed cord had been dropped for smooth cords earlier in the production run but, given the moulded Aus plug, maybe they were using up their old stock. From the serial number it looks like the manufacturing date is June 1972 0429 Model 2 year - has to be 1972 06 Month 01532 Sequence in production It looks superb to be 42 1/2 years old Al |

Thanks Al for the info, I thought it may be 1972 - 1973, with the white ribbed cord and hoover changing it's plug in 71/72. The freedom had the same plug but with a smooth plastic cord, I guess to cope with the automatic cord rewinder. I believe Hoover ran this concurrently with the Freedom line for a year then phased it out. The 427 lived on till 1983 in OZ till it ended.
What I find interesting is that the Convertible, Junior, Constellation, 427 and Freedom Cleaners were made at the hoover factory at Meadowbank, Sydney and the Celebrity in the USA and the 429 in the UK. Can anyone shed any light as to why hoover would have made some models locally and imported others? Cheers Mike This post was last edited 12/10/2014 at 00:33 |
