I was just wondering what everyone's favorite commercial vacuum cleaner is for basic carpet cleaning. Is it a red Sanitaire (or some variation of it), a Hoover Guardsman, a Koblenz, a Windsor or whathaveyou.

Mine is the Sanitaire sc 887. That unit is the one that uses a dustcup.

before everyone freaks out this photo was taken for a laugh i am sucking up leaves on dry concrete and there is no brush roll in the machine needless to say it got rid of the leaves in no time . I have yet to find a vacuum cleaner that cleans carpets better than one of these

My favorite is the Sanitaire SC888, before they got rid of the headlight and changed the motor. And even then my favorite is still the Sanitaire 800 series. Can't go wrong with one of those.

Windsor Versamatic. Heavy, yes, but oh so quiet, and a foolproof super sucker. That or a Sanitaire 7 amp with vibragroomer 2. I would say my first choice would be the Windsor because of the attached hose. One of my favorite vacuums to use.

My favorite commercial type uprights would be Sanitaires and Royals.Good. Call on using the Hoover to pick up leaves,it would mulch them, too! I just have the Gardner man I hire just use his Stihl backpack leaf blower.

The very first day at the 'seminary'

I had to use one. "This is a sign, I believe"...ran through my mind.
At our church, I was in charge of cleaning. We had renovations, followed by a professional cleaning company coming in to clean up everything. They had the British HOOVER Commercial. I told the pastor that we need one. He replied, "Take care of it". I called our local HOOVER sales and service, Mr. Jones. He delivered a red Guardsman. A few weeks later, we got another for the rectory.
I traded in a Kirby Omega.
Put DOWN the bows and arrows.

Not really commercial but....

I work in an educational environment and after seeing how much sand (about 3 cups) was left behind in an entryway rug after cleaning it with one of our windsor versamatic pluses i decided to get something more powerful. When cleaning classrooms i do a light cleaning on a day to day basis covering high traffic lanes and any visible debris and a weekly thorough vacuuming. After using the simplicity for 3 days the check bag light came on. It weighed about an estimated 1.5-2 lbs. The day after i extracted a room i put in a cheap arm and hammer bag, to see what would be drawn out, when i was done i cut open the bag and found at least a cup of very powdery fine dirt.

I would kind of like to use a direct air machine, but there's two problems with this: Noise, and someone else may use my vacuum, including student workers.

I also have a Bernina 6700 in case there's a 2nd area, but i prefer the Simplicity

I've gotta vote for Royal here. I've got a franken-880/671 at work that works like a charm. That said, Sanitaire rates pretty high too. I don't think it does as good a job on the really ultra-tight office carpets, just because they're hard to agitate and Sanitaires don't seem to seal down as well as Royals and Kirbys do, but on any other carpet, it's right up there.

I think I really like the Sanitaires, I'll have a basically new one and a MinuteMan V14 Pro for commercial needs.
