Hi Unimatic1140.

As always, you post some great reports, as this was a fantastic read. Several of my favorite brands and models are listed here.

I just got my 2015 Buying Guide, And for once Consumer Reports got something right! In the section on vacuum cleaners, page 137, it states under 'most & least reliable.' "Kirby was among the more reliable brands of upright vacuums-." Anybody who wants to read the rest can get the buying guide, but I was prepared for C. R. to trash Kirby, and for once, they did not!

Like I've said before, keep sharing these great reports because it's the era I love most.
Alex Taber.

Don't you love the quote,"With care, these could last 7-10 years or more! Here, 50+years later, and I'm sure they all would STILL operate. Mine do. Of course, the outer bags wear, brushes, and belts/bulbs.
And, how about the "rage" on disposable paper bags! Now, there are near "fights" over bagless.
And the beat goes on. Thanks, Robert... always fun stuff to see.

Hi Kirbyloverdan.

Great to hear it, I never read C.R. but there were several comments made over the years that Kirby was not popular in the ratings.

They likely reviewed the 516 or 517 (I'm thinking 516) at the time of this publication.

Look at the price!

Of the Strato Cleaner..150.00!!! For a store vacuum, no wonder they are rare, that is the one I have, model 5555.
