I recently took in a Royal 7600 Duke that was thrown in our dumpster at work.Naturally,I rescued it and brought it home.It powers up and has great vacuum pressure. The only thing missing is the Adjust-o-matic on the front. The builder's label has serial number A90A001149 and is a 6 amp.Based on this information, does my Royal take type A or B bags, and did it have the Adjust-o-matic knob or plain plastic cover? Any help is greatly appreciated !

Forrest,

Welcome to VacuumLand! Yes, your Duke was made in January of 1990. If it takes disposable bags, they would be the type A disposables given the age of the cleaner.

Your other question concerns if the machine used an Adjust-O-Rite. Yes, it did have one.

Again, I'm going to demonstrate my lack of understanding. Could someone please show how the "dial thingy" works on the front of Royals? I get that there is the black knob in the back for the height adj. but what does the thing in front do and how does it do it?

The black thing should go in & out once it is adjusted right. You do that by turning the knob in the back either up or down. It's pretty neat when you get it right & you have a mirror to watch it in motion. 😀

I also forgot to tell you when you turn the machine on, look at the dial & if the black thing is in turn the knob in the back till you start seeing it start to pop out then stop. I usually have mine set in the middle but to each his own. It's harder if you have the step selector rather then the adjuster knob.

Mark, you've got the right idea, except it's backward. You turn on the vac, and watch the button on the adjust-o-rite as you lower the nozzle with the knob. When you reach the correct height the button pops IN, not out.

Thank you Jeff!! 😀 I knew it was something like that, it's kind of hard when you have sculpture carpet that thing was popping in & out all the time. Again thanks!!

Thanks Jeff, that helped alot. But HOW does it do it? Is there a senseing arm on the nozzle? If so does the nozzle "float" until locked by the pin thingy?

When the nozzle is at the correct height, the suction will create a seal inside the vacuum head. this seal pulls in the little black knob on the Adjust-O-Rite! wink

Just received my Adjust-O-Right knob today[It's on the Duke already :)],and I ordered the round spring for the type A bag securement.Found both of these parts at www.vacuum-depot.com.... They have quite a few parts for these oldsters :) !

By the way, a few things about Royal type A bags: First off, they're essentially the same as Eureka type F&G, which might be easier to get.

Also, if you want to use newer bags, it's possible to attach a Kirby Generation-series fill tube to the Type A spout using a hose clamp. Once you've done that, you can use modern Kirby bags. This mod is reversible, too - just take off the hose clamp and pop off the tube.

I was wondering if I could convert the fill tube to a Kirby style;that way,I wouldn't need two types of bags between my machines :) ! www.vacuum-depot.com... has a couple of different options on fill tubes, and both are around $65 each .

Help buying a Royal vacuum cleaner

Looking for a great vacuum for my fairly small church. We have mostly indoor/outdoor carpet and have several of the "box store" variety vacs, which offer less than good pick up capability. I have followed this forum postings on the Royal and believe I'd like to find a used Royal that you expert vacuum people would look for if you were me. I am only qualified to operate one, not pick one out. Your help appreciated.

I would go with a Royal Commercial Metal Series vacuum like the one that is the subject of this thread. They have 14" and 18" nozzle options. They're built for the long haul and have great suction power! The 7600 Duke is obsolete, but the current models are descended from it :) .Well worth the money !

Forrest,

I noticed the grounding prong on your power cord is missing; that would not be safe. A replacement power cord would be part no. 1-061136-AU0 in orange; the original was 1-061136-B00 in medium gray.
