If you could choose any upright available in the world today what would your choice be?

Mine would be the Riccar Brilliance :-)

The Maytag M500 is a fantastic vacuum cleaner, Light weight and powerful with a very large capacity bag. Made in the USA, and all for $299.

I would choose the Hoover Platinum Lightweight bagged upright. It's a throwback to the simpler designs of yesteryear with its fan-first configuration and very large soft dust bag. Add to that a very long cord, light weight and power switch on the contoured handle, and you have my perfect, simple, effective upright vacuum cleaner. I use a separate simple canister for non-carpet cleaning, so I don't need a bulky upright with onboard tools.

I know! But the cost of excellent European canisters here is much higher than in Europe. Probably a result of history: the upright was born in the USA, and the cylinder/canister was born in Europe....

Marcus, If you will be in St. Louis, it's just a hop, skip, and a jump to St, James Missouri where the Riccar factory and the Vacuum Cleaner Museum are located.

Tom Gasko (dysonman1) runs the museum and I bet he would love to give you a tour of the museum and the Riccar / Simplicity factory. If it were me, and I found myself in St. Louis, I would jump on the chance to meet Tom and get a tour.

To mention my favorite upright vacuum and that would be the Kirby Sentria for cleaning performance  and my second choice would be the Tandem Air Riccar Radience which cleans just as well as Kirby, but may not last 50 years like a Kirby would.

Anything with a SEBO name on it - everything SEBO produce for their uprights is all about easy-fix user maintenance and low running costs.

The most amazing upright I've seen is the Airway "super chief" upright. I saw one from Tom Gasko's collection at the Tacony vacuum museum. It was way ahead of its time. Perhaps someday it will make a comeback.

I know - isn't it obvious?

Trouble is, we can't get Riccar in the UK and there are very few other brands from the U.S that we, as buyers can buy that is COST EFFECTIVE. Some models are far too big for my home (cue Kirby) as well as far too expensive to buy and maintain.

Sebo's long standing reputation and spares availability means its a low cost brand and reiterates its reliability, not just from a motor or general performance point of view. So very few forget that reliability isn't just from a performance point of view.

The big shocker for me at the moment is dealing with Hoover UK. After purchasing their Hoover "Idol" stick vacuum, and despite moans about the poor floor heads supplied, they have sent me two other alternative floor heads that they claim should have come with the model concerned. One of the floor heads had to come from Italy - it begs the question that in this day and age, and with Hoover's well known name in the UK - as to why I have to wait an extended period for tools AND dust bags when they should be in place already.

I'd love to try out a Sanitaire SC889A, since I'm a big fan of those Eureka F&G uprights, and that 50' cord sounds amazing! Maybe a Sebo Felix too, if I needed something for the whole house.

There's quite a few that would be amazing to have..... My dream upright would be a 40's GE or Premier, or a NIB Kirby Legend II. An Electrolux Automatic upright would be cool, too. (Their first upright)

A "poof Proof" bag means that the moment you go to remove the bag from the machine, it seals itself (think Miele Intensive Clean type).

If you are visiting St. Louis, you might consider coming to see me at the Factory Outlet Store/Museum - and if you want a Maytag (or other Tacony machine) you can get one at the Outlet Store price, and take it home on the plane as "luggage".

The engineers for our company fly all over the world with prototype machines packed as "luggage".

Pictured is the Tandem-Air Maytag M1200 with the WOW bare floor tool that includes the electrostatic washable pad to dust and vacuum the floors. The 17 foot hose and full length wand is amazing - turns the upright into a true canister type vacuum.

The Maytag uses a sealed, cloth, HEPA disposable bag. The air then goes through the electrostatic/charcoal pre-motor filter. Then the air exits through a sealed cartridge HEPA filter after the motor.

I'd choose something practical. I like the look of the new Aerus Guardian uprights. Apparently their motors have been updated within the past few years and the performance has improved. I loved the top-fill quick change bag when I had a few of the previous models, plus the new Aerus chevron brush roll is one of the best I've used.

My second choice would be a Sanitaire SC5713B. The residential Eurkea Whirlwind models were fantastic, I just want a bag. I recently saw on these in use in a hotel a few miles from here; it's a pretty quiet machine. Boring, I know, but it gets the job done and it has on-board tools.

I took my Kirby G6 on a tour through the house tonight, I might as well go for a new Kirby Avalir like Alex said! In fact, I just spoke to our local Kirby dealer today and I'm supposed to be notified as soon as the Avalir lands! Funny thing is, he seemed genuinely shocked that I even knew about that model!

Riccar's look gorgeous. Are they good vacuums? The certainly look it.

The bags on them look good, they look quality made, Made in the US I gather, they look nice, just look like a good vacuum.

They look awesome! I would love to own one. I know one member on here has imported a Riccar Brilliance and loves it. Not sure I would import one but if they became available I would definitely be very interested. The Maytag M1200 is very similar but not as costly.

The Brilliance...

Hi Mark
I have one and believe me it is an AMAZING machine. If you are in the area you HAVE to go see Tom ( Dysonman1) at the museum. They also have a factory outlet store if you can't resist.
Personally I would go for the Maytag M1200- same as my Brilliance but with a longer hose. I believe it's quite a bit cheaper than the Riccar version as well- and it has a Cool Blue light on the logo;).
Mine runs fine off my 1.2kva Transformer........

The link is to the thread I posted when I got mine ;)

Quickly skimming this thread: Depends on choosing WHAT

Performance: Any G series Kirby
(While I personally like the G4 best, all others (5 and upwards) are too "roundish" in their design to me, G5 to Diamond being still somewhat ok, Sentria 1 and 2 going over the top = a plain "no" (look at dipping bow in the upper edge of the vinyl bumper, a "never" thing to me, added by this roundish belt-lifter crank).

Looks and feel:
Hoover Ranger series (any of them).
Drawback: The idle extra airflow around the connector (where the belt goes)
Another drawback: All Hoovers of that age have this dreadful hard-on-hard materials vibration thing (bearings, motors, plastic housings) (all Juniors, Seniors and Rangers have it)

Design AND looks and feel:
All Hoover Commercials (nice looks and colors, nice classical design)
Drawback: Only US, not available here.

Head and other lights:
Any Hoover hardbody with lights, especially the ones with back light height adjustment. Drawback: Horrible transfer of bearing vibration to outer body (see above).

Smoothness of operation (vibration free)
Volta 1970s upright with drop-in paperbags. Never seen any easier upright on that point.
Drawback: No lights, somewhat "everyday" design.

Upright cleaning while being easy on the eye and on the ears:
Any Lux 801 and up (Royal series and Intelligence).
Good lights, good looks, easy operation, a "pull" feeling, yet vibration is low.
Drawback: They aren't an upright but a canister.

Just my 2 ct.
Joe
