I've never named one of my own; however, my Mom had a Kirby Tradition that we called "Jaws".

We had a sucker fish (plecostomus) in our fish tank when I was growing up. You know, the kind that would hang on the side of the glass?
We named him "Hoover". (If, indeed he was a "he"...)

My freinds called my NSS M1 not the Pig---But "The Bag!!"They would say to me-"This radio stations transmitter is a mess""Bring the Bag!"So I would help them out!Showed one station manager the bagful of stuff I removed from his TV transmitter after cleaning it out and rebuilding several of the power tube sockets. He was rather shocked!

When I was in high school, I took Drama for two years. It was one of the few classrooms that was carpeted. This would have been 1978. There was a brown Model G Electrolux (straight suction / no power nozzle) in the classroom. His name was "Homer". If you got to class after the bell rang, you had to "Homer" the rug for a minute or two. No one ever changed Homer's bag. They had the automatic control set at six. Of course, Homer was very quiet in operation because the bag was so full. They were using the floor brush side of the nozzle, since there wasn't enough suction to use the rug side. One day, I brought in a new bag. My Aunt had a Model Automatic F (with PN-1 - very rare for the time), and I asked her for a new bag. Homer's front door was taped shut so he wouldn't open up (they thought he was broken). With the new bag, Homer sucked and sucked for about ten minutes - until the new bag was sufficiently clogged with all the fine dust that had been accumulating in the carpets for years. Then, he triumphantly popped open again. Out came the tape, and I think that was the last new bag he ever got.

My Model 519 Kirby

is sometimes referred to as "Old Red" because of the color of the trim and the attachments. "Old" , because it IS old.

my vacs have names!

I do give anthropormophic identity to my vacuum cleaners! My Kirby 560 is Mary, Kirby 519: Jane, Hoover 918: Jackie Gleason, Hoover 63: J. Edgar, Electrolux RC: Liz Lemon, Electrolux G: Big Mamma, Electrolux AF: Percy, Electrolux E: Donna, Electrolux AE: Debra, Electrolux LX: Fiona, Filter Queen: Dustee, Hoover 26:, Willa, Hoover 28: Dear, General Electric canister: Tina Louise (the GE is kind of heavy in the hips), and Kenmore upright cyclonic that belongs to my partner: Kid. I am fairly certain that this arrangement would remain the same on or off my meds! :) What a fun post eurekastar!

"Hoover 63:J Edgar"

You might be interested to know that one biography of J E Hoover included an inventory list from I think the estate auction. It did include 'Hoover vacuum'among lots of serious art & antiques.

I've only named one of my vacuums. I named my Kirby Heritage II "James" because like James Kirby, that vacuum had been through a lot before finding a nice spot in life.

the stores vacuum

To tell the the story properly Ill start from the begining the family purchased the store in 1997 when we came in there was a Tri Star in the back room we named "Pig" that we still to this day use for repairs and clean up its I believe a late 70s model and yes we have replaced the motor and lid latch but its been part of the business so long how could we get rid of it I find it humerous how customers will bring in a brand new dyson or eureka or Bissel thats all clogged up and all I have to do is pull out "the Pig" and a few seconds later, done. I always finish by saying "that'll do pig, that'll do" Btw loved the MR Mom cameo Jaws Was Sweet I actualy built a heritage II to look like it.

only one of them

Nope, mostly my "Staubsauger" are just "Staubis" (a diminuitive found in quite some many roomsharing situations or among youths, so regular informal German).
There is "Kühli" for "Kühlschrank" (fridge) as well, but no "Waschi"for washers (I wonder why).

The only vacuum having a personal name is my Vortech Force: "die Wildsau" (the wild hog) or "die Sau" for short. It is my only vacuum to really swallow things up (which you can hear), all others just clean pretty well.
Ok, the little bagged Dirt-Devil Broomy sometimes is called "Kirby adolescent" ;-))

The only large appliance having a name is our dishwasher: "Minna" (a very common female first name in the 20s, typical for "die Perle" (the "pearl" of the household; read: the cleaning lady, see pic)

I mostly use the legal name my vacuum was born to be "Kirby". I do how ever refer to "her" as my muscle building machine as "She" is a Heritage II or old reliable. And oh by the way "She" still performs great and there for my daily driver and best friend.

there are a lot of cleaners here that are not numatics. Some of us older members are passionate about our cherished vacs. best leave this thread for the older collectors. stick to your contemporary thread and your dysons.
