to show what i had promised i fred's post about his powermate , here's what i did to increase the filter ability of my 1979 sears best 2997.
the first photo is the a/c filter in the primary pre filter. its honeywell merv 10 a/c filter from depot. i bought a 20 x 36 sheet. this can do many vacuums (over one dozen) the wire side is facing the motor. however in the first attempt, the motor sucked in the filter media. to prevent this, i put a 1/4 wire screen mesh from home depot over the motor inlet and epoxied it into place. with the wire mesh side of the a/c filter butting up against this, there is no media loss from the filter. the last photo is the post motor filter. you can see how black it is. im sure alot of the is carbon dust as its not brown like the contents of the bags usually. this will get you nearly hepa filtration with these older kenmores. i know on the lower end models the filter is only a disc. the media can simply be cut to fit the disc and a wire mesh over the inlet. this merv 10 a/c filter can also be used for hoover portables/ slimlines, and filter cloths in hoover constellations, or greatly effective for dial a matics as well. dont waste time buying crappy vintage filters, a/c filter will last longer and filter much better. |
