It's time for the DoubleWhammy, Sammy! This is a working (1940s) Bakelite Zenith radio, and if you guessed: I found it right on top of the Victor Victrola...you just won a cigar! I really shouldn't have turned it on, though, because these types usually have a metal Dielectric Capacitor. What happens is, that the dielectric fluid contained inside of them will begin to dry out with age. When this occurs the capacitor can explode, destroying your transformer and potentially your amp...which will often prove way more expensive for you in time and cost. So, what do you do when you get a nice ole radio....you hade better change the capacitors or BANG! |

I'm sure this was meant for the Household department, the last thing this radio would be considered is Contemporary!
I have an old Transistor radio I bought with some Records and an Elvis stamp at the Flea Market, it originally took a 67.5 Volt battery! I'm sure Wal-Mart carries them! Thankfully, a couple of 9-Volt batteries rigged in series made the radio jump into life! it ran fine on all of the original hardware! ironically enough, the first song that radio played was "The Great Pretender"! a perfect fit! |

Alex, that's the weird thing about it, I started making the thread in "Household" and then the computer demons must've saw fit to put it in Contempt...Contempt, Please forgive me, I can hardly bring myself to say it...CONTEMPORARY...there I said it! Are you happy now...Are You HAPPY!!!
Hans, it does sound remarkable well, and it has a great reception, also! I won't play it again until I get some new caps for it. |
