I decided to Google Oreck for the heck of it and found this nice article talking about TTI planing to add about 200 jobs to the factory in Cookeville. They are planning to bring back some of their manufacturing from Mexico and overseas. It looks like there may be some good things on the horizon for Oreck and Hoover. I will post a link to the article and feel free to discuss. As of now I am going to bed:)

It is becoming very hard for western and Japanese firms to do business in China. Police raids and arrests of top management on what can charitably be called questionable charges and general hostility towards western firms is forcing many to re-evaluate doing business there. What happened to Bloomberg over an article written by a journalist in one of their publications is instructive. So are the court cases against Meade, Google, Oracle, Microsoft and Apple to name just a few. Labor isn't particularly cheap there, land and energy are vastly more expensive in China than they are in the US, the law in China is opaque and you cannot obtain a fair hearing in a Chinese court. Firms see this and are leaving. Meanwhile wealthy Chinese do not invest their wealth in their homeland where the business environment is no more secure for them, but rather they are taking their considerable wealth, along with their families and their knowledge and leaving China for the west, especially the US, Canada and Australia, where they can own their home and business outright, pass these to their heirs upon death (impossible in China unless you are a high party member) and the schools here are better for their children, not to mention you can breathe the air, drink the water and eat the food here and not poison yourself.

That is entirely true. I made a thread a few months back saying that the days of "made in china" are becoming numbered, for an all manner of reasons, and certainly not just in manufacturing floorcare. As well as the issues which you have mentioned which I didn't, you have environmentalists and human rights activists making more of an impact, forcing factories and local authorities to even slightly adear to international ruling and standards, especially regarding wages. This costs China money, making it more expensive to produce things there, which is the sole reasons western and Jap companies started investing their in the first place. What made Chain attractive is being taken away from them, and rightly so, as they have been exploiting cheap, slave labour and far too lax environmental and human rights laws.

You hear horror stories of western firms nearly going bankrupt because of producing their products in China. I went to a German toy shop in Munich who have been running since the end of WW2 making traditional German wooden children's toys. The owner who I spoke to, very nice guy, said he started outsourcing to China, but moved all production back to Germany, because the Chinese were not seasoning the wood, the toys came in damp and with mildew growing on them, poorly painted using cheap paint, often damaged as well. He said that with automated manufacturing these days and the technology he now has in his factory in Germany, it would be hard to make them any cheaper, anywhere in the world, even though he is employ a good few locals.

Another story of a textiles firm in England who make flags, cushion covers, towels and all sorts who also decided to outsource to China. The owner of the company went to china, spoke to a supplier, they agreed a design and quality and said to make 150,000 of these cushion covers. They came back to England to find the whole lot was a write-off. Very poorly produced, not at all up to specifications. There was a similar story with an English cutlery firm, and I am sure there are similar stories in the US and all over Europe.

that evil company TTI bought Oreck to bring more American jobs back to the USA and to build Hoover ,Royal and Orecks in Tennessee .

I love how some bash TTI even though that's been their goal from the start this stuff can't happen over night .

Thank God for TTI saving those iconic brands and bringing vacuum manufacturing and Jobs back to the US .

It would be nice if TTI would reintroduce the iconic Hoover Convertible.

I don't fear Chinese investing their money in the US as some do. For one thing, they can't cart US real estate off to China with them. Second, when you think about it, these are born in China Han Chinese who have so little confidence in their own country they are taking their money and investing it outside of China. They chose to invest here in the US most often. That, folks, is a huge compliment. Believe me when I tell you that Chinese officials and the nationalist fanbois there do not like the idea one little bit and these people are looked down on in China for betraying their country. Yet they are taking their money out as fast as they can and driving the real estate market in San Jose CA through the stratosphere. It is almost like something coded into Chinese DNA, San Jose CA is the place to be. Think about all the places a Chinese business person could invest their billions. That they chose the US says an awful lot of good things about this nation and our future. We often worry about our future, but here we have wealthy people from other nations who can invest their money anywhere and bring their families to any nation, and which one do they chose? The US. We should be proud of that. Very proud. They see strengths we often fail to recognize because we are blinded by short term fears of jobs, mortgages and growing old. We often miss the larger picture. We are fed fear on a daily basis, but those immigrants see opportunities available nowhere else and here they come. That is one of our great strengths.

If this is TTI, could it be possible that they may bring Vax back to the UK?

Doubtful Adam. Our Vax cleaners are branded Hoover and Dirt Devil in the US, so it's not just the UK market to think about. It would be non-sensical to have exactly the same machine manufacturered in 2 different locations just for the sake of "returning" the brand to the UK.

Roger beat me to it. The founder is German, but based in Hong Kong, which let's not forget, is different to China

The fact it is Hong Kong based is important. They have a slightly different mentality towards business and products than the Chinese, I know I have been to both countries. Be that as it may, no one can deny this is good news, but I feel we are going to ear more stories like this.

It doesn't matter what country you want to talk about, the Chinese anywhere will cut any corner they think they can get away with to make a buck. You don't apparently live with Chinese people as I do. I'm in a mixed Chinese family. It's a gold rush mentality. It doesn't matter which country Chinese live in either, that mentality drives how they do business all over the world. They have driven away a couple of very good high quality contractors I used to be able to retain because the Chinese side of the family thought I was paying to much and started grinding on my contractors to lower prices. American contractors don't like being treated that way so now they don't return phone calls or my e-mails. They will hire the cheapest possible contractors and put up with crap from them I would never put up with just to save a couple of bucks. It's how Chinese everywhere do business. I love my family but hate their business practices.

When they talk about Hoover made in Mexico they are talking about El Paso TX. We lost a lot of jobs here in El Paso because they moved the plant to TN
