This was found in the attic of a grocery store in the midwest. Store dates from the mid 1800s (hewn beams). We are demo-ing and found this in the salvage cleanout. The graphic says Domestic and Peoria Illinois. Any info would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Is it a true vacuum or a carpet sweeper?

is a pneumatic vacuum-sweeper! It uses a bellows driven by the wheels for suction! I'm getting one of those from a friend soon, as far as I know they actually work.

These machines turn up on eBay fairly often, sometimes in very good condition. This specimen's value would be negligible due to its condition.

Huh, interesting. So using a bellows means the the suction is intermittant? How do these things keep from blowing the dirt back when the bellows is recompressed?

I think that there's 2 bellows, so while one is creating suction, the other is pushing the dirt into the catchbin in the back. Well, that's my interpretation of it, anyways.

I'm pretty sure it goes like this: when applying air, the suction valve is blown closed and the exhaust valve closed. when sucking in air,the exhaust valve is sucked down and the suction valve is sucked in.

simple design! laughing
