This is my last buy. I bought it for 20$. It was dirty and I clean it. It don't have a duster brush tool and the bare floor tool, but there is no place on the vacuum to place it. Is that the Power-mate compact was made for bare floor too? I put some washer to help the rear wheel to turn but it doesn't work well. I will put plastic sheet where the wheel had grind the plastic.

The seal of the motor was not well placed.

When I was working on the vacuum, my dog was eating and my sister's dog was looking at her.

Very nice. You did a beautiful job of cleaning it up.

How interesting, too, about the powered floor brush. I have two of these now, a 9 amp model with a Lamb motor and a 12 Amp version I picked up yesterday and haven't had time to look inside yet. Both of mine are suction only. There is no wire to the hose connection to power a brush, and the hose is like something from a shop vac.

Yours looks to have a Chinese motor. My 9 amp has a 5.7 inch Lamb motor common to Kenmore 3.5's but since I only bought the 12 amp model yesterday I don't know what motor it has. The part number in Sears Parts Direct makes me think it also has a Chinese motor.

FYI, you can plop a big Ametek Lamb 5.7 inch 115923 motor in there. I test fitted one in my 9 amp model for giggles, so when that motor dies (it will, it's cheap and nasty) you can replace it with a good Lamb motor that'll last you 20 years and has big suction (447 air watts).

The wheels for that model are still available. I need to buy a couple in the coming weeks too. You can also still buy the rear motor cover and the gray housing beneath it. The on/off switch is also still available.

They're nice vacuums, especially with a powered floor brush. Nice job.

Glad to see people loving on Kenmores.

The wheel of the vacuum is in good condition, but the wheel had grind a line in the body of the vacuum and it stock there. I will glue a plastic piece where the wheel has scrape the body of the vacuum.

Thanks for the advice with the lamb motor, but if the motor die, I have a Kenmore motor dual stage from a canister which had the speed control. It is sitting in the basement of my parent house. I had pick up this vacuum in the trash many year ago, the hose was crushed, so I removed the controller and the motor.

Nice vacuum and you did a great job cleaning it! I think these must have been more common in Canada, as I've seen more from there than here. That PN is still used on a Canadian Kenmore now. If you need a replacement dusting brush, Sears still sells them online for about $10 or your local store may have one. Not sure on the floor brush, but I think maybe this model may not have come with one.

As far as I can tell US market versions were suction only. I have a 9 Amp and 12 Amp version and neither has a plug in the hose recess for a powered hose. I have the parts and will add such a connection to the 12 Amp this week so I can give it to my fiancee to use and allow me to retire the old square bodied straight hose Kenmore 4.1 she has been using.

Bebring, a two speed motor in one of these would be bitchen! Did you know that Lamb still makes one for Filter Queen? The wiring is unusual. One of the two brushes isn't wired directly to the field like you would expect but is wired to ground! Speed control is effected by switching between parallel and series operation. A dual pole, dual throw switch is jumped diagonally across the end contacts. You can't see that as it's hidden inside the switch housing. It is a very unusual method of speed control. Give me some time and I'll try to find the bulletin for that motor so you can see how it's wired. There is a schematic on the bulletin. It's small so you have to magnify the pdf to see it clearly.

Thanks

The motor I have in spare, is not a two speed, but a variable speed with a controller on the hose. When I will go to my parent house, I will take picture of the motor and the controller.

I tried my product number on sears parts direct to see the schematic and the part, but it don't find my product.

Use the model number to search Sears Parts Direct. You can find this on the label underneath the vacuum and it will start with 116. followed by five to eight more numbers. Example, the model number for my white Kenmore 4.5 canister is 116.2145090. If you choose to seach by model number and type that into the search window you will pull up the parts list and diagram for that vacuum.

I put 116.20050202 and it find nothing.
You can see the model number on my first post.
It maybe doesn't work because is canadian model.

That happens sometimes. One of my vacuums doesn't show up in Parts Direct under the correct model number. In my case, 116.2441081 doesn't show up but if I type in 116.2441084 my vacuum comes up. Someone at Sears must have fat fingered the number. Try some variations on your model number and see what comes up.

you can usually find the model buy just entering the 116.XXXXX the last digits are for variations within a range on older models. I've found many a Kenmore part that way.

Also you can use the chat feature on Sears Parts Direct. That is how I confirmed the incorrectly entered model number was my vac.

Tom, that tactic isn't working for his model number. I even tried the Sears of Canada website using the full model number and your abbreviated one, plus a couple of variations and nothing comes up. Weird.

I discussed with sears parts direct and this is the answer :

We have received your parts request at Sears PartsDirect in the United States. For Canada parts requests you may go direct to Sears Canada Home Central. You may call Sears Canada direct at 800-361-6665 or you may visit the Sears Canada Home Central website at www.sears.ca/gp/node/n/16398001.... I truly regret that I was unabel to accommodate your request today. Is there anything else I can help you with?

I have a Kenmore elegance also and it was the same thing. I ended up calling sears to know what is the new bag number.

I haven't seen that in while

A friend of mine had the same vacuum in white with power nozzle years ago. It was a great vacuum. I have seen it once in blue with power nozzle here in Delaware. I think they must have had a very short run with power nozzle then went to suction only. When they were sold here the models with pn did not come with a bare floor brush. They had a switch on back of hose handle to turn off the pn for bare floor use.

That is how I set up the red 12 Amp for my fiancée. The gas pump handle hose has a switch on it to turn the floor brush on and off. I like that set up. They are good little vacuums. My fiancée whined again today about the old square 4.1 she is using now (and that I so admire) so I cannot get the red 12 Amp to her fast enough!

Is that the original motor, a two speed motor or one that is infinitely variable? It's a little hard to tell but it looks like there are only two wires coming off the motor. Is that the case? What vacuum is that hand control out of? The motor housing looks like that used in Whispertone models. Is this set up from a real early Whispertone? Very interesting equipment. Must learn more.

That control is from an early Whispertone with the box on the handle.

Post# 290373 , Reply# 18   7/26/2014 at 18:09 (3,533 days old) by bebring (Québec)

The only thing I know, it's was a Kenmore canister. Is a infinite variable speed ( I never try it because the hose was crushed). The control was on the handle. The controller in the small metal case was in the motor compartment.

You can see a vacuum with that controller on the link.

That's what I was thinking Fan-of-fans. I have the predecessor to the Whispertone that is supposed to have a hose with that style of handle but I run the later gas pump handle style hose cuz it's all I can find. I would hang on to that part, it is not common at all. Most are long gone now.

That control box looks an awful lot like the one in my older lunch box shaped 4.1 with an infinitely variable speed motor. In the case of that older vac, the speed control is rotary dial on the rear body of the vac. You can see it in the images. It operates a potentiometer, at least that is what the part is called in Sears Parts Direct. I would very much like to find another of those controllers, just to have one on hand. I'll bet my vac has the exact same motor as you have there.

Very interesting. The original motor in that compact is the single stage Chinese motor, correct?

a vacuum with a rotary dial?

1 for low, 9 for high! If you don't know what suction level to use, dial 0 and Sears will help you decide! tongue-out

More truth to that than you think. The fiancée was whining about the old 4.1 not having any suction. She had the motor dialed back to minimum. I turned it up and there was plenty of suction but she still hates that vacuum. It comes home tomorrow.

Really funny super-sweeper :)

The double stage motor is not the original for this vacuum.
The original motor, is the motor show in the first post and is this motor I keep in that vacuum, but if one day, he die, I can try to put the dual stage motor.

There was a mint condition black Whispertone ca 1993 with that variable slider handle at a local thrift store awhile back for $20. No cracks in the original hose and all attachments. It was very tempting, but I had to pass, I have too many Kenmore canisters as it is. Sometimes I wish I had gotten it though, but I have nowhere to put it!

Fan-of-fans, when you encounter something like that which you intend to pass up for your own collection, let the Desert Tortoise know. I will rescue it, give it a nice spa day, new filters, a HEPA bag and a gentle working retirement in the warm dry California sunshine. Give me the shop's contact information and let me arrange it's rescue.
