I prefer the VGI original design as the helix shape allows more air to pass through the brush roll chamber and therefore provides better airflow. The VGII in contrast is a solid cylinder like most revolving brush rolls.
I really don't think you can replace the beater bars on the VG I. They are permanently in place. Electrolux offers an "all bristle" version of the VGI for their Sanitaire uprights. This is better for commercial carpeting that is glued down to a concrete floor. You need to sweep this kind of carpeting, not beat it with a metal bar. |

Oh...and regarding dates of arrival on the market:
Eureka's first beater bar brush roll seems to have debuted at the time that Hoover's patent expired. This first Eureka Vibra-Groomer was offered in the Eureka Vanguard Cordaway Rugulator upright which came to market around 1970. I think the Vibra-Groomer II with individual mini beater bars arrived 10 years later in 1980. Eureka's answer to Hoover's "bar-less" Quadraflex Agitator was introduced in the Express Power Nozzle - about 1983 or 1984. It was called the Vibra-Groomer III. Interesting note: Eureka Williams proved that you do not need solid bars to deep clean a carpet. The Eureka Disturbulator included with the Automatic uprights of the early 1960's offered equal if not better carpet cleaning performance as the contemporary Hoover Convertibles featuring beater bars. |
