This is a video of my Brown Montgomery Wards Vacuum Cleaner made by Hoover. The guy at the vacuum store told me the motor does not sound normal. What do you guys think? Is there something wrong with the motor? The vacuum picks up like a commercial vacuum. I think it works fine in my opinion.

Phoenixman2014, your Hoover sounds perfectly fine to me. Just another sleazy vac shop trying to tell you your motor is bad, & then try to sell you an expensive motor repair you don't need. Use your vacuum normally, & whatever you do don't reward this business by going back to them! The only way these shops are going to learn to do business ethically is when their business starts going downhill by mistreating their customers, & hopefully those customers warn their friends & family.

Hi there your motor sounds sweet running to me not rumbling of bearings or unusual noises going on.

Have you considered that perhaps the vacuum store want to make some cash out of you by doing repairs that are probably not needed,or want to try and sell you something else.

I have had a similar experience with my 1934 hoover 800 a few years back infact and theirs nothing wrong with it and still running sweet.

Also a few years ago i had a similar reaction to another local vacuum store with my electrolux z65.All I asked for was a service and grease and check the carbon brushes.

They tried to get me to have a replacement motor or rebuild 17 years later its still running sweet as a nut

I have found modern day vacuum stores in my area just dont get vintage machinery at all!!,infact they seem to be scared of it lol

I would stick to the opinion of collectors who know their stuff and ignore the shops.

Dont worry about your hoover dear boy sounds sweet to me!!

Best regards markanthony5 from England

Sad isn't it. You expect that sort of dishonesty from the auto repair business which is infamous for playing those kinds of games, not from the friendly neighborhood vacuum shop.

Among Harley Davidson owners the joke is "Harley Davidson, making mechanics out of riders for 115 years". Looks like it's time to buff up our own technical skills. Maybe there ought to be a new topic after Vintage and Contemporary called Technical or something where technical data and how-to's to fix as many brands and models of vacuums that can be compiled for members to access. Mods? How 'bout it?

I'm lucky in that the owner of the shop I use is beyond just being honest. He gives out all kinds of advice and puts up with my questions about how to finagle this into that to keep some worthy old Kenmore working.

You know you hit the nail right on the head.

We all need to get more techno with our vacuums and also set up threads on here for people who are in the electrical mechanical know how and share as much info with each other as possible and keeps these nasty rip off money grabbing dealers away from us collectors!

Most of us seem to know how to change belts filters and do the cosmetic work on our vacuums spray jobs making bags be it uprights or cylinders but for most of us that's it.

We defo need to sysmtoms sorter thread on here with people who are in the electrical mechanical know then we can just put a youtube vid on for help just like the reason for this thread

So overall, it sounds fine then. Then, that guy at the vacuum shop has no idea what he is talking about or knows anything about vintage vacuum cleaners. He probably wants to charge me money to fix it. I never realized that. So then, this vacuum sounds really fine then. It picks up so well. Best vacuum in my collection. I will leave it alone then and continue to use it like normal.
