I found this one at habitat restore today for $5! It has already been rebuilt buy the local vacuum shop here in Athens already and it runs great. It's just a little dirty. Ithey also had a hoover decade 800 commercial vacuum but I had to pass on that because I looked at the underside and the cover was gone and the inside of the fan chamber was shredded somehow. I'd like to clean out this convertible though and possibly sell it to somebody who collects those.

It has the stronger motor, etc. One of the last of the great "Convertibles". I have it AND it's brother with the round handle. Beautiful floors there, too.

Model U4101

That's the model that my parents had, which I grew up with.  Does this one have a metal or plastic chassis under the hood?  Great model from 1978 or so; one of the first models to use the type A bag.  Lots of memories!

Chassis/ under the hood

I don't know yet because I haven't taken it apart yet. I've only vacuumed with it and it runs perfectly. As I said it was rebuilt by our local vacuum shop at some point before I got it as indicated by their sticker that they always leave on the hood. And I called them about it and they said it was about 8 years ago. Most of the decent vacuums I come across in local thrift shops have some variation of their sticker from being rebuilt by them.

You can tell by just flipping it over -- the underside will either be metal or plastic.  My U4101 is on the right; a newer Decade 800 is on the left.

I looked underneath and it's all metal.

You have indeed found a great vacuum cleaner! I have the ABS plastic base version of that cleaner (Model U4101-001), which my great-grandparents bought in 1978. I use mine as a daily driver, and it is simply amazing how much dirt collects in the bag after only a few weeks. I personally consider it to be among the most efficient carpet cleaners I've yet used.
