So, I'm looking to buy a kirby g series to use as an everyday driver but I am unsure of which one yet. Most of the reviews favor the diamond edition most. What are some of your thoughts?

I have

A G7, 2 sentria's I kind of like the G7 wish I had gotten the diamond with the speed switch on the side. The Sentria I think why I don't like it is because of the handle. I prefer to ones that the other G series gave even the older 5 series ones.

I own a Diamond Edition, and it's a great vacuum cleaner.  The high/low switch actually turns the vacuum into a 4 speed cleaner -- 2 speeds in nozzle mode and 2 speeds in hose mode.  In addition, the DE introduced a new style brush roll with stiffer bristles.  I like it because it seems to do a better job of agitating the carpet.

I've heard the same thing about the brush roll and the handle. The website I was looking to buy from sells the g3 through the sentria 2 and they seem to like the diamond edition the best as we'll. they say the DE was the last one to have a metal handle with a plastic decal whereas the the sentrias have a plastic handle with and aluminum decal making it weaker.

Go and try them both

To determine which one you like. If they need polishing many post on here how to get them shined brighter then when they first got off the line from the manufacture. I'm strongly thinking about switching the handle to see if that's what I don't lie about the Sentria.

That's a very good idea. Would a metal handle from an older g series fit on a sentria?

Yes

All those will fit, the only things that are different are the G3 G4 hose connector, you have to take the ring gasket off, not on the machine if you want them to fit the other G series machines. Also I want to say check for clicking sounds when you push them forward & back, some of them can be really noisy & that's when you know transmission time, you'll know by looking at that if they've been taken care of or not.

The Sentria and Sentria II...

are the most powerful cleaners Kirby has ever made. The Sentria motors spin at a higher RPM and have the redesigned mini emptor (on SentriaII) producing more airflow than previous models. This can be proven by checking the specifications of the Sentria models and compare them to previous G series models.

(109 CFM vs 127 CFM on Sentria)

Also, contrary to popular belief, the new wider handle is made of a space-age polycarbonate that is actually stronger than previous metal handles. The front of the handle is not covered with a decal, but a thin layer of real aluminum which can be polished just like the powerplant.
