This is Vax's TOL Cylinder, the Zen. Vax's quietest, most powerful multi-cyclonic cylinder. I payed £111.29 on an Argos deal 2 weeks ago & have used it nearly everyday since.

It's quiet, powerful, & comes with a full size turbo brush compared to Hoover machines where you have to buy it separately. The Multi-Cyclonic technology is fairly effective & the filter has some dark spots on it, which isn't bad for 2 weeks use.

As far as quiet goes, Vax claim 74dBA, but in my opinion it's quieter than that. You are able to talk over the noise & I haven even used this machine at night when others have been asleep.

A 1600w motor produces 350 air watts which makes it more efficient than the Hotpoint Dual Clean, but then again design comes into the process aswell.

The tools store on the handle via a click process, they don't fall out & they are handy for quick clean ups, because they're there, ready for when you need them. The crevice tool is quite stubby & short but the dust brush rotates at several different angles & has softish bristles. The hand grip is even rubberised!

On the Zen you get an 8m cord & a 1.7m hose, this gives a long reach & it's got a longer reach than the Hotpoint. As this is the pets model it comes with a Hepa H12 exhaust filter which can't be washed but the filter above the dust bin can. The bin is 2.6 litres & by using this everyday I empty once a week.

Another point to note is that the floor tool has a plastic sole plate but it still glides easily across the floor. The quality of the machine is quite good, it feels as if it could be used everyday but it does have the 6 year guarantee which puts my mind at rest.

Nice looking Zen - it is quite old though compared to Hotpoint's Trolley vacs though it is good to know the info you've supplied.

The plastic soleplate suction only floor head looks like Wessel Werk designs and sounds like the ones that both Bosch and SEBO stock with their low price cylinder vacs - the K series in particular benefits from the plastic sole plate floor head as it is lighter than the one with the metal plate fitted.

Im currently using one on my SEBO C2.1 - far lighter to use in general and cleans just as well.

I find the floor nozzle cleans well & is easy to use across the floor.

Vax don't really promote this cleaner anymore. I think it has been overshadowed by the Air Cylinder.

Possibly but the Zen has been out on the market for a number of years now compared to the Air cylinder and has a far longer cord length than the also-much lighter Air model.

The Air Cylinder might be lighter but you can't remove the cyclonic system like you can on the Zen.

I believe the same floor tool comes on Air Cylinders too.

I've got one of these too, used once and now boxed up again. Its worth preserving as the model that Dyson made famous by suing Vax over it.

Mine is grey and white,  rather than grey and blue. As bagless goes, its not a bad machine, but then, it was originally supposed to sell for £250. It wasnt long before that price came down, substantially, just like the Vax Air uprights and canisters. Vax have sold many many more Air Reach uprights for less than £150 than £250, thanks to Argos slashing their prices for the Mach Air range.

I think there are well over 1000 reviews for the Air Reach on amazon & Argos.

The original series Air Reach was a massive success, because it was lightweight, had a long hose facility and was very nimble and compact to store. It also had dual motors and was fairly quiet in use.

If it hadnt been for Vax's lousy quality control these cleaners would have been pretty near perfect. Much better than the previous Power range with the cone filters, and smaller than the massive and clunky Mach 4,5,6 and 7 uprights which were an American design and too big for UK users.

Once prices came down to the sub £150 range, they flew out. You had to cross your fingers though as to whether yours would have manufacturing defects like faulty hose connectors or dodgy motors that burnt out within a few weeks.

Well IMO Vax's customer service makes up for that. They come with the 6 year guarantee.

Just to add a couple of niggles I have found with the zen.

Firstly, the bin does not open by itself. When you press the button to release the bottom, it gets stuck & requires you to pull the bottom off with your fingers & a couple of times my fingers have been covered in dirt.

Secondly, the floor tool does not suit one carpeted area of the house. Because I plug it in the middle of the hallway, one way it vacuums, then the other way after I've vacuumed the first side the nozzle becomes extremely difficult to push.

This vacuum, even though I use it everyday, if I had a smaller house I wouldn't use this at all. It tends to also get stuck on corners because it is slightly heavy to lug around.

I think I might return this vacuum.

Why dont you just bite the bullet and buy a Miele or a SEBO? - you wouldnt have to keep sending them back then.

HiLo - why do you have two profiles on here??

Post# 282942 , Reply# 16   6/3/2014 at 14:32 (3,608 days old) by hi-loswitch98 ()

What do you mean?

Post# 282948 , Reply# 17   6/3/2014 at 14:47 (3,608 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

I noticed that too - one is HI-LOswitch98, and the other seems to be a lower case version hi-loswitch98

I noticed this with SUPER-SWEEPER and super-sweeper as well. Both members are junior members, so I wonder if its just a system anomaly?

Post# 282951 , Reply# 18   6/3/2014 at 14:56 (3,608 days old) by hi-loswitch98 ()

It's the same profile, I think it automatically does that.

It isn't two accounts, it happens if you type your username in capitals at the login prompt! It's a fun little glitch, I love it myself!laughing
