As you can see, this machine arrived in a filthy state, and at first I didn't realise what it was. On closer inspection, it appears to be a "Contract Hire" model, although there is no "J" suffix on the number.

I think this might be a 6525C which is pictured here on the right - seems mine had a bag change at some time. The C could have stood for Contract, although I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong

This example has the silver, hammer finish paint and the extra long cable.

Never seen a Ranger with that hood before Seamus - whats its code 4002C? Am wondering if the C at the end of the 6525C does mean its a contract version?

6525C

Hi Steve
The 6525C was a standard model number in the same way my U4002 is just a U4002. Other than it looking different the model number is identical. As well as having the blanked off lens you should find the motor has no lamp holder or any other provision for a headlight.
Robin...
What's the date on yours? mine is March 1969. Regarding the J it will be stamped on the chassis and not on the rating plate, I've attached a pic of mine.
The bag on yours appears to be an original 652 Vinyl one? any pink left on it?
Seamus

Hi Seamus,

The chassis is stamped 652A and the serial number is JT735903. I believe that it dates from about 1963, but I would welcome the opinions of people more knowledgeable than myself.

There doesn't appear to be any trace of pink on the bag.

I don't know any history of this particular machine, so I have no idea what has been changed over the years.

Robin.

Dates,.....

Hi again Robin
It's later than 1963 as Hoover were still using the under chassis switch and yours has the later type. The new serial number system started in 1967 so I would guess late 64-late 66.
Does the bag have Hoover on it? that really has thrown me as the only UK vinyl bag I was aware of is Pink...

Hi Seamus,

Yes, the bag does say Hoover on it (on the left, behind the cable) so it might be the original. It certainly looks in keeping with the style of the machine.

How many Contract Hire 652 examples are known to survive?

Robin.
