.
. I got the idea for this thread from tolivac's comment in the Kirby 510 dumpster find thread when he said the 510/11 would have been from the year he was born. So what favorite vacuum cleaner(s) of yours came out the year you were born? For me, it would be the Electrolux Model E-Automatic, and the Kirby 516 -- both 1956 vintage. "It was a very good year." (P.S.: I put this in the "Vintage" Department because I believe/assume most members here are 20 years old or older.) |

Was glad I sparked an idea for vacuums relating to members birthdates-this could be interesting! So remember that Kirby-used it thru my childhood-and watched Mom use it,too.Dad dumpted the bag in the gardens! So the dirt was "recycled"-Put back outside. |

As for me (born in July 1981), the Kirby Tradition 3CB was then the vacuum being made (except for the fact I'd rather find one with the locking headlight, a feature they stopped doing at the end of 1979 due to the problems with the speed switch which were consequently just caused by user error), although that would be replaced soon by the Heritage 1HD.

This is madness! I wouldn't consider Dyson vintage if it grew and paid me! Charles, is this thread a way to see some beautiful old vacuums, or find the age of your fellow Vacuumlanders? Alas, I am also too young for this thread! Thankfully, not that young! I likely would've bought a FANTOM Thunder, my parents made the same (and well-worth-it!) Investment! They even gifted a Cyclone XT to my Grandmother (really my Mother owed it to her after leaving her Rainbow on the water basin!). I would buy Fantom today if they still were around, Dyson couldn't make me blow money on their poorly-made plastic status symbol of a vacuum if they tried! |

Hmmmm that's a tough one, would either be a Electrolux Model G with a PN1, a Kirby 561 or a Whirlpool Imperial with Power Nozzle. |

Born in 1959 (oy am I ever old!!!!).......
My favourite vacs from that year: the Eureka Mobile-Aire canister with it's innovative "more bark than bite" Vibra-Beat Carpet Nozzle and the General Electric hangable slim Singer knock-off upright. What a fun pair of vacs to have in the closet in 1959! CLICK HERE TO GO TO eurekaprince's LINK |

So Charles, I agree with you on the Electrolux Automatic E and the Kirby 516. My paternal Grandparents actually had an Automatic E, but unfortunately theirs is not the one in my collection. Other great cleaners from that great year were the Hoover 64 Citation, Hoover 84 Constellation, and (I think) the Westinghouse SC-1 Cannister. Here's a pic of my Citation.

I was born in 1980.
So for me it would have to be the Rainbow D2-A. I remember seeing one when I was about 3 years old. It was my babysitter's, I was fascinated by it until she turned on then I was scared of it. When I watched it running (at what I thought was a safe distance) without the dolly/ casters. I was fascinated by the churning water which overpowered my fear of the noise. Her D2A was exactly like the one pictured below. I remember it having the brown plastic switch toggle instead of the metal switch toggle of the D and D2 machines. I wonder if the lady still has the D2-A, I'd pay her a good price for it. That Rainbow would make an interesting conversation piece. |

I was born in 1963 but I've never been particularly tuned into machines from that year. I seem to have come from a family of old souls. My parents had a 1950s vintage Lewyt canister (pink motor w/gunmetal gray tank on a roller base) as their only vacuum up until the early/mid '70s. Were I a serious collector, this would be my "holy grail". My dad's parents had an Electrolux from the late '40s or early '50s (either an XXX or LX) that was in use up into the 1990s.
I wish I had the Electrolux but I have no idea what happened to it or the 'coffee can' Hoover that was stashed in the basement. I think that Electrolux sparked my affinity for the metal canisters from the '60s and '70s. An in-home Kirby demo, of a Classic Omega around 1972 also impressed me greatly and gave me an affinity for that brand that went unrealized for some 40 years until I chanced to nab a nice Gsix from beside a dumpster three years ago. Oy! What some people will throw away... |

I was born in December of 1981. Benjamin (KirbyClassicIII) previously stated that Kirby Tradition was the model for 1981. However, the Kirby Company website says that the Kirby Heritage was "introduced" from January 1, 1981 to January 1, 1984.
So, what is the proper Kirby model for my birth year? Should I get a Kirby Tradition or a Kirby Heritage??? |

I can answer that question for you. I have in my collection the 3rd Kirby Heritage that was off the production line. It was a sales prize that my friend Nick won. The Heritage went in to production in September of 1981. So with you being born in December you was born when the Kirby Heritage was out. What a great model that was. As they all are! Hope this helps.

@kirbymodel2c- You rock! Thanks for clearing this up! As I suspected, the dates on the Kirby website are crap. LOL
So, if the Tradition was already being sold in 1981 while the Heritage began production in September of 1981, wouldn't it be a "safe" assumption that the Heritage wasn't sold until 1982? Much as we saw pics of the Kirby Avalir beginning late in 2014, it wasn't available/sold until early THIS year. I'm not sure which model to get in honor of my birthday. I think the Tradition would have been the "new" Kirby sold in homes in 1981, while the Heritage was being produced when I was actually born. HELP!!!! LOL |
