For those who haven't read about this before, the motor will hum/buzz, but does not turn.

I've received various diagnostic theories - from worn carbon brushes to bearings needing to be re-packed. Some were also nice enough to provide links to sites where I can purchase the correct part (if I figure out what this is) or the entire motor.

Just thought I'd provide an update.

I've taken apart the motor a few times now - first, looking for obstructions, then inspecting the carbon brushes, and most recently attempting to find the bearings.

Each time after I reassemble the motor, it works fine - for a few minutes.

Is it possible that something is binding in the motor and I am temporarily freeing it when I take it apart? If so, what could it be?

Thanks again for the assistance.

my convertible does the same,

Perhaps something is over tightened, or a loose wire. Is there any way you can provide pictures? I'm sure it'll save the vacuumland community some trouble.

hey buddy,

Try running the motor without the brush-roll in, my convertible mentioned above runs just fine as long as the brush is not connected!:

Attempting To Find The Bearings

Take it to your local vac shop and ask their opinion of whether they think the bearings are severely worn. You should be able to tell yourself, if you grab the belt pulley and see if there is any play in it. There should be none. Or, maybe the retainer is shifting or off center.

If Bearing Is Good

Might want to see how the field coil is located. It has to be rigidly held in place. If it is shifting off center, you'll have the same situation as a very bad bearing.

Thanks for the advice...

@super-sweeper - I did disconnect the brush roller and it didn't make a difference. Also, I don't have a digital camera. Maybe I can borrow one.

@ornery - Thanks for the advice. I can check for play in the belt pulley and field coil.

Although I was hoping to fix this myself, after all is said and done, I may have to bite the bullet and bring it to a repair shop
