Hello! I have a Royal vacuum model 887, and I'm trying to convert it to paper filter bags which to date it's never used. I've had this vac since it was new. I bought a new outer bag since the existing one is now totally disgusting, but the new one is inferior and clearly not OEM; thinner fabric and the bottom ring that attaches to the vac is flimsy metal and fits very loosely rather than snugly. Also this new bag doesn't have the inner flat, rubberized fabric tube. I can't use the A bags I bought since there is supposed to be a bottom tube on the vac itself with a spring that attaches to the paper tube. So apparently this vac was intended to be bagless...? I emptied it again and put it back on the vac. This vac looks beat up but it runs flawlessly. Thanks for any help...I'd love to make the conversion to a new outer bag that accepts paper filter bags.

Melanie,

Your 887 would've had paper bags from the beginning. They are "A" type disposable bags. Thus, the shake-out bag on your machine is a replacement.

Your 887 would've looked like this originally.

Royal 887 conversion to bags

Hello Ben,

Thanks for responding to my post on the 887. This strikes me as odd since I bought the vacuum new and it has always had this shake-out bag. Is there an OEM filter bag I can purchase that will take the A bags with which I can replace the shake-out bag? If so, is there a part number I can reference? The current shake out bag is a light grey color with a red and blue Royal Commercial patch lettered in white. Thanks again.

- M

Melanie,

May I have pictures of your machine so I can better help you as to why you're having issues with it? BTW, how old is it, if you claim to have bought it new?

Example: Model 887, Serial No. F87A002279 (June 1987), Amps 6.0

Thank you,

Ben

Royal 887 Bag Conversion

Dear Ben, I don't claim anything. I bought this vacuum (I have 3) in or around 1987 new. This is a simple question: Can I convert this shake out bag to a bag with paper replacements? Serial #F87A002554 Vac 120 HZ 60 Amps 6.0
Please see below a pic of the vacuum in question.

Melanie,

Like I originally thought, that bag on your machine is not original... it is actually a gray shake-out bag that came off of a commercial Royal. Let's see what other Royal fanatics can say about converting this shake-out bag to use disposables. The Adjust-O-Rite is also older (pre-1976) despite the fact it fits and is also light blue.

As to finding an original light blue zippered Scafitex bag for your machine... that will be an even tough journey. Good luck...

The bag doesn't have to be blue. Any zippered Royal bag should work. You could
Even have a sewing shop install a zipper on your shake out bag and then use F & G
paper bags. A good vac shop may have a Royal parts machine and will sell the bag
For a fair price, like $10. I inquired for about a used part for my Miele and came away with
A much needed and impossible to buy new replacement part for...$10 after some haggling.
Vac shops toss dozens of great vacs every month but often keep a few here and there
for parts.

hi Strickly,

Nice to make your acquaintance, thanks very much for the practical suggestions. I don't care about the bag color since I'm using the vac, not displaying it in a museum. I appreciate your courteous response.

Regards,

M.

It can be done. Can you do it?

Lowes 2-in Dia 22-1/2-Degree PVC Street Elbow Fitting, Item #: 174891 | Model #: PVC 00326 0800 $1.79. You'll need two of them. Screw one into the inlet of the bag from the inside. Add the second one and that's it, other than a spring to hold the bag.

That's a $4.00 project that works. Or, for about $75.00, you could buy a new Everlast bag. I believe that would work OK. Or, keep an eye out for a neglected machine on Ebay, snag the bag from it, and part out the rest.

Here's a video of my shakeout bag conversion:

Royal 887 bag conversion

Hi John,

Sounds great! I've bought parts vacs for my Royal Princes from eBay and even at flea markets for a few bucks. It's not so easy now to get a brush bar or correct fitting end cap for these terrific hand-helds. I have a couple of parted-out Princes stashed away now.
If I can't find a correct fitting bag that way I'll try the PVC retrofit. thanks much.
