My mother had a Kirby purchased before I was born, I'm guessing around the mid-1950s.  It was an upright and, well, unfortunately it looked like the majority of Kirbys I've ever seen, with minor differences here and there.

I don't know if this helps or not, but it was sold with a lifetime warranty (including belts and tune ups).  I have a vivid memory of taking it in for service when I was around 14 and the dealer practically standing on his head trying to get Mom to buy a new machine (without a lifetime warranty of course).

Unfortunately when Mom passed my sister appointed herself in charge of everything.  The next thing I knew the Kirby had been put out with the trash.  She never even asked, just assumed I wouldn't want "that old piece of... " you get the picture.  I thought that was weird because it didn't look much different than it must've looked when she brought it home... It certainly had never changed in all the years I had recall of it.  Mom took care of it.  She had every tool and accessory in its original suitcase-style box.  Seems to me there was another piece too, but I'll be hanged if I can remember what.

Many thanks

Thanks for your help Kevin, it is much appreciated.

It's weird I guess, but I never considered that I had a collection of anything. In fact, until very recently I would have laughed at the concept of a vacuum collectors club.

More than anything that nailed it home for me was the application for this site, when I had to count appliances and vacuum cleaners. I was shocked at the number. How did that happen? Then I realized that I missed a few.

Then I next realized that the appliances only included major appliances. Not fans, Hmmm I guess I have a few. Not coffee makers, well you know you need different kinds for different coffee's and some are just kinda neat. Mixers? Guilty. I currently have 5 full sets of china and lots of miscellaneous pieces or place settings. only 3 sets of silverware though.

How did this happen? Is it a disease? Is there a cure? Do I want it?

Too many questions. Ooh, the garage sales are starting up again...

There are some days I feel like I have an addiction to vacuums, the good news is I'm not at the point yet where I'm stumbling into a vacuum shop begging for a hose or brush as a fix for my collection.

It is fun to collect something that you can use rather than something that sits under a glass case or in a book somewhere.
