I was just curious about what this weird slot on the back of my Kirby G4 is... I have just need using it to slot coins in that I find as I'm vacuuming and was just wondering if anyone could tell me what it is exactly.

It's a Kirby Bank. Used to store coins you find while you're vacuuming to save up for bags and belts.

Oh!?!

So I guess that means I've been using it correctly

I've never used them on my Kirbys, but that is exactly what the slot is for- saving up for bags and belts.

From what I remember a kid, my Mom had a 518 and the handle was filled with quarters, from what I remember her saying was that every time you vacuumed you were supposed to put a quarter in the handle and at the end of the month you put the accumulated money toward your monthly payment. As far as I remember all Kirby's had some sort of piggy bank on their vacuums with the exception of the Dual 80, that was the first Kirby to have the new Delta handle and it just had a specked decal back there. Ben from Oregon should have an answer on what was the first model to have the piggy bank on the handle.

The Dual 80 was the first Kirby to have the new wide handle fork, therefore it was the first to have the Kirby Bank. The 518 did not have this because it still had the cylindrical handle with a red rubber grip. The D80 debuted in 1967.

The Dual 80 was the only Kirby to my knowledge NOT to have a bank in the handle. Ben in Oregon would know best on when the first bank model came out??

Kirby have stopped putting the bank on the new models.

The Kirby Sentria does not have a bank in the handle.

My mistake. NO Kirbys before ~1970 had the bank. ALL Kirbys after the Classic 1CR (I think) had the bank. Excluding, of couse, the Sentria and Sentria II.

Sonny, your wrong, my mothers 518 form 1958 had a slot in the handle, she used to fill it with quarters. I don't know how far before that they started?

I'd never noticed that before. Just checked and sure enough, my Heritage II Legend has it (though it's blocked by the bag most of the time).

Weird little mini-feature, but hey, why not?

The 518 DID NOT have a wide handle and it DID NOT have a coin slot. The handle must have been a later replacement. The first Kirby to have a wide handle was the D80 in 1967, 9 years after the 518 was made. The 518-D50 had a cylindrical handle with thin grooves going down the length of the handle. And it was impossible for the cylindrical handle to accommodate a plastic handle back, where the coin slot would be.

I don't believe my Ultimate G diamond edition has the coin bank either.

The bank was as others have said, there to place coins as you vacuum. During a demo we used to tell the customer, "If you put a quarter in everytime you vacuum, you've made your payment."
Then we would drop a quarter in the slot and say "Here, I made your first deposit."

I know every Kirby from the Classic to the Ultimate G has had a coin slot. Can't speak of the others prior or after.

OMG Sonny, I have been a Kirby Area Distributor since 1977, I know Kirby's. Check the back of the handle on any of the tubular Kirby handles and there is a slot just below the vinyl handle grip where the coins go. Check it for yourself before you make claims that you know nothing about.

The round Handle!

DID have the slot for coins, A good friend of mine was a Kirby dealer from 1965 until his death in the early 2000s, and he said they always told the customer about the slot in the handle being for coins !

Got it!

My 2001 G Limited Edition has the coin slot. I remember my mothers 1973 Classic having one. Its odd to me the coin bank isnt mentioned anywere in the video manuals Kirby made all these yrs.

I check the handle on my Ultimate G - lo and behold it does have the slot. I never even noticed it before and never would have thought of putting coins in there, not that there are coins on my floors anyway.

According to my expertise, I believe only 3 Kirbys don't have the handle slot: The Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80, Sentria and Sentria II.

Yes, there is a slot in the handle grip on 500 series Kirby vacuums. In fact, I once found several vintage Mercury dimes in the handle of a 500 series model when I disassembled it for restoration. I don't remember which model, but I do remember finding the coins!
