I recently acquired this project- a Dirt Devil Ultra Vision Turbo from 2008. The same friends of mine that bought the crummy Dirt Devil Breeze I posted about in another thread gave it to me because it no longer worked "the belt started squealing and when we checked the brush had melted" Ok, sure, let's go with that :} had given it a good cleaning and a new filter a few years ago when the original filter got holes in it and the thing blew more dust than it picked up.
Here we go- fast forward to 2014 and it is broken. I brought it home and it is filthy, dusty, and reeks of cigarette smoke (they are heavy smokers!) I actually left it in the garage until I could start cleaning it because it smelled so bad. The brushroll immediately went in the torash, obviously not repairable. I tore it down and removed all the electrical components, then washed everything in hot water with some laundry detergent... I mean everything. Hose, all body parts, handle, filters... everything. Left all the parts to dry and then started on the motor. It ran, but was full of dust and had some bearing noise (no doubt from all the dust that went through it a few years ago), so I removed the fan housing, fan, and bearing seal, then squirted some 3in1 blue can in, then dripped a bit on the other bearing. I washed the fan and fan housing, then reassembled everything. No more bearing noise. After all the plastic had dried, I polished it and removed the scuff marks. Looking better already! I went downstairs and reassembled it today, and plugged it in for a test. Sounded pretty good. I will order a new brushroll and belt and then it should be done. The smoke odor is mostly gone, except for the hose which held onto the smell, but I imagine that will fade over time.
