Hello,

This is currently listed on eBay as part of a Electrolux Silverado set. What is its brand & story?

More information: The "Universal" line of appliances was made by Landers, Frary and Clark of Connecticut which originated in 1862, when the firm of Landers and Smith purchased Frary and Carey. It was reorganized in 1865 as Landers, Frary & Clark.

In 1866 they purchased a factory from the Meriden Cutlery Co., and began making table cutlery, and fixed blade knives.
In 1909, they purchased the trademark Universal from Levi T.Snow of New Haven, Conn.
In 1912, Landers, Frary & Clark purchased the Humason & Beckley Manufacturing Company of New Britain, and began manufacturing pocket knives and razors.
In 1918, they purchased all of the Meriden Cutlery Company.
In 1940 it acquired the O-Pan-Top Manufacturing Company, producers of a top-opening carpet sweeper. (Later, many off-brand vacs were produced by the company. Universal was just one.)
In 1950, the cutlery division was discontinued.
The firm continued in its other endeavors untill 1965, when all assets, patents and trademarks were sold to the General Electric Corporation.

The Atlas brand version of the Jet 99 was called the El Dorado.

Name Derivations:

Atlas - In Greek mythology, Atlas was the primordial Titan who held up the celestial sphere. He is also the Titan of astronomy and navigation. Although associated with various places, he became commonly identified with the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa (Modern-day Morocco and Algeria). [from Wikipedia]

Incidentally, this is not the namesake of the book of maps to which we refer as an atlas. That honor goes to King Atlas, a mythical Libyan monarch, who was imagined as a philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, and designer of the first celestial globe.

El Dorado - 1. a legendary treasure city of South America, sought by the early Spanish explorers. 2. any place offering great wealth.

Here is a photo from the Wikipedia page of a statue of Atlas holding the celestial sphere (an imaginary dome of the firmament surrounding the earth); of which the Atlas logo derived:

Thanks for your replies, Hans (#1) and Ronni (#2). You got me more curious about the Atlas and Universal brands, so I found some ads on Ebay.

Wow that Universal upright ( reply 10)  looks very similar to a vacuum I have been searching for for a life time, Below is a picture of the columbus version, My gran had the Electrolux version. As far as I have gathered it was a built in South Africa for South Africa machine. What struck me as interesting is the adapter for the attachments is very similar. It is very lickely that the South African machine was based on the universal
